Finally, the dust has settled after the release of the Ryzen 9000, and we can calmly explore AMD's new products. Zen 5 was not something many were eagerly anticipating as a breakthrough, but I think those who follow the hardware market already know that AMD has followed in the worst traditions of Intel regarding how to properly test their products. Today, we will discuss why AMD was in such a hurry, what the new Ryzen chips are like, the actual performance gains and heat output, and whether it is worth considering the Ryzen 9000 for purchase. This is MK, and we operate across a wide range. Follow us on Telegram, VKontakte, and watch us on YouTube as we delve into the new Zen 5.

It seemed that the low performance in the initial tests of the Ryzen 9000 was a bug in Windows 11. The reason lies in the software. Zen 5 features an improved branch prediction module, and just a week after the release, Microsoft issued a patch to resolve the issue. In general,

Even before the official announcement, we were fed rumors about the super-fast Ryzen 9000, initially promising a 40% performance increase, then 25%, which is still significant, but the presentation...

Everything has been arranged in its place. AMD claims an average of 16% extra performance per GHz compared to the Ryzen 7000. It's not a record, but it's on par with other major Zen updates. Let's break down who is footing the bill.

First of all, Zen 5 is a significant step forward in the internal structure of the core. It has one and a half times more arithmetic logic units, a third more address generation blocks, two new quad-pole caches for the first and second levels, as well as numerous optimizations for tasks. It's hard to call the Zen 5 architecture a mere stepping stone; AMD engineers have truly excelled here.

Secondly, the manufacturing process for the CCD chips with cores has been slightly reduced. AMD continues to use its successful chiplet design from the 3000 series. The new processors can have up to two chips, each with eight cores, along with a separate input-output chip featuring integrated graphics. The latter has remained completely unchanged, still using the same six-core design.

The technology process is based on a 5-nanometer node and incorporates two RDNA 2 blocks inside, along with support for 28 PCI Express 5.0 lanes. The official memory frequency has slightly increased from 5200 to 5600 MHz, but we know very well that even the Ryzen 7000 series can easily exceed 7 GHz in practice. Therefore, the focus is currently on the capabilities of DDR5. The core technology process has decreased from 5 to 4 nm at TSMC, which provides a 20.2% improvement in energy efficiency, while transistor density has increased by 6%. Against this backdrop, AMD even took the risk of lowering the thermal package of three new products: the six-core Ryzen 96X and the eight-core 97X from 105 to 65 watts, and the twelve-core 9900X from 170 to 120 watts. Only the senior sixteen-core 9950X remains at its 170 watts. AMD decided not to change the frequencies, wisely considering that following Intel's degrading path would be bad for business. Other processors, as usual, will be revealed later; first, they need to capitalize on the profitable opportunities.

Users are willing to overpay for X in the name; they have added a bit of software features. There is a new curve sharper function that allows for more precise tuning of the voltage curve. The PB mode raises the thermal package quite well, even on AMD's official slides, where the 9 700X is constrained by 15% of the eight-core 65W. They also increased the memory operating mode to one-to-one for Ryzen 7000; it used to be at a frequency of 6,000 MHz, but now they promise up to 6,400 MHz. Oh, and there are new chipsets. According to AMD, the only significant change between the 600 and the M series is support for Ryzen 9000 out of the box without needing a BIOS update. Everything else remains the same. The top-tier X870 has plenty of USB, SATA, and PCI Express 5.0 for SSDs and graphics. Meanwhile, the B850 is a copy of the popular B650; it also supports overclocking of RAM and processors but limits graphics to sixteen PCI Express 4 lines. The lower-end B840 looks like a mockery of users, just like the A620; it can overclock as well.

It's only memory, but why was the bus cut down to just sixteen lines of PCI Express 3.0? It's unclear; even AMD's lower-tier models operate with eight lines of PCI Express 4. Reducing the bus bandwidth by half due to insufficient video memory can cut performance by up to a third. In short, they took the A620, reduced its bus, and called it B840. For some reason, it's hard to imagine what A820 might turn out to be; perhaps they'll stick in PCI Express 2.0. In general, avoid the B840 chipset; it seems like some kind of joke from the marketers. It will be released later this year. It’s better to go for the A620.

To summarize: the number of cores is the same, the frequencies are the same, the power is the same, but they cut down the architecture and upgraded the marketing. As a result, according to marketing slides, the 9950X is faster than the 14900 by up to 56% in work tasks and up to 23% in games, and they've even reduced the price by 20-50 dollars compared to Ryzen 7000. It looks like a win, but for some reason, sales haven't taken off. Let's take a look at the real tests from AMD.

I still overestimated the energy efficiency of the 5, squeezed into 65 watts. The eight-core 9700X performs on par with its predecessor in heavy tasks, with an average increase of less than five percent, literally within the margin of error in games. Yes, the consumption is only 60 watts compared to 80 watts for the 7700X, but we are talking about desktops where even an extra 50 watts will not be noticeable. However, the performance increase is a different story. If we allow the 9700X to utilize the thermal package with the power limit, it surpasses its predecessor by an average of 10%. It's pleasing that AMD did not play cat-and-mouse games and has already released a new firmware update that returns the thermal package of the 9700X and 9600X to the old 105 watts. According to AMD's tests, this adds heat to the eight-core processor. But even such a move did not allow the 9700X to outperform the 7800X in games; the 64 MB cache turned out to be more significant than the minimal increase from the new architecture. Thus, the newcomer falls short in heavy tasks.

In projects on 10-15 FPS, they perform similarly. Moreover, the low-frequency 7800X 3D turns out to be energy-efficient, while the six-core wattage is quite sufficient. Therefore, games with overclocking improve performance, with the performance gain relative to the seven cores fluctuating around 7% in work tasks and reaching zero in games at high resolutions. Well, it's clear again: we were deceived; the Ryzen 9000 is not a new generation on Zen 5 but merely a rehash of Ryzen 7000. But wait, in single-threaded tests, everything looks great, exactly the promised 15% increase. Moreover, the fresh Ryzen chips, with the power of one core, managed to break into the top. So why is it so disappointing in multi-threaded performance? It's all because the Zen 5 architecture is still frankly raw. AMD didn't just postpone the announcement of Ryzen 9000 for no reason, and it's clearly not just a typo on the lid. Perhaps it was simply a ploy to buy some time. Apparently, the company just doesn't...

I managed to polish the new processors and decided to launch them on the market before the release of the Core Ultra 200 in October, which, according to the first tests, promises to be very interesting. Currently, the Ryzen 9000 has a host of growing pains; the latency between cores in different dies reaches up to 200 nanoseconds, which is three times more than that of the Ryzen 7000. The longer the cores wait for data, the lower the overall multi-threaded performance. AMD has already promised to fix this in the next firmware update, so in the future, chips based on Zen 5 will be further accelerated. Moreover, Windows itself is not ready for the new processors. According to AMD, the dual data pipeline requires additional optimizations in the system core, which were added to the current build of Windows 11 23 H2 just a week ago. Users of Windows 10 may never receive the necessary patch for branch prediction. This is how operating systems die, and tests confirm AMD's words: a simple system update boosts the performance of the 9700X by 10%. It seems that’s all.

The company is justified only if the same update increases frames by 7,700x with the same 10%, so the overall delta between generations remains unchanged, and the difference between chips in games stays within the margin of error. Meanwhile, the blue processors did not receive a boost; apparently, the deal between Microsoft and Intel has concluded, and as we know, a rising tide lifts all boats. There will be no revealing of Zen 5 against the backdrop of Zen 4 here. As a result, against its predecessors, the Ryzen 9,000 looks frankly weak on paper. Yes, they are cheaper, but in practice, prices for Ryzen 7,000 have plummeted over the past couple of years, following the old red tradition. There is no point in paying 26,000 for the 9,600X when the 7,600X costs a third less and is only slightly weaker with improved energy efficiency. Even the sixteen-core 9950X averages 135 watts in work tasks, which is 10% higher than its predecessor.

The temperatures also remain unnoticed; just as they heated up above 90° during heavy tasks, they continue to heat up. The heat dissipation from tiny crystals remains a serious problem. The battle with the shadow of the Ryzen 7000 from AMD is ongoing. It has yet to hold up against the formally updated Core 14. The newcomer looks better, and it’s no coincidence that AMD rushed to release it before the Core Ultra 200. The company clearly knows more about its competitors than we do.

AMD promised us that the Ryzen 9950 X would be up to 20% faster than the 14900K in games. In practice, the situation is quite the opposite. Top Intel noticeably outperforms the new AMD leader in most projects. The engineers at AMD need to address the latency issues, and the new Windows will certainly boost FPS, but not by a third to achieve the promised increase. This is because AMD adjusted the tests in its favor. The twenty-thousand-ruble i9 was tested in stock mode with a 125-watt thermal package and DDR5 6000 RAM, meaning it was tested in a mode in which it will never operate.

We checked that even a 170-watt installation can reduce the performance of the 14900K by 15-20%. This allowed AMD's marketers to portray such superiority in the consumer segment. The six-core Ryzen 9 600X also does not shine; after optimizing Windows, it becomes on average 10% faster and is capable of competing with overclocked i5 processors at the same price. However, the latter is one and a half times faster in multi-threaded tests. So, there is no visible victory for AMD here. Meanwhile, Intel is not wasting any time. The first tests of the Core Ultra 9285K show that the new chip will outperform the 9950X in single-threaded performance by almost 5%, and in multi-threaded performance by a full 15%. Therefore, it is not surprising that AMD rolled out new products, which will look quite pale. The Ryzen 9 9000 demonstration illustrates the saying, Haste makes waste. In the Zen 5 architecture, they packed so much new stuff that now AMD programmers, along with Microsoft, will spend another six months optimizing the code for the hardware.

Core Ultra 200.

The next batch of blue products regarding the Ryzen 9000 series follows a cyclical pattern. The Ryzen 2000 series didn’t differ much from the 1000 series, only by a few percentage points. However, back then, AMD at least honestly acknowledged this. Most likely, by the release of the budget 9500F and the gaming 9000 X3D, the company will have refined Zen 5, and the new products will indeed look more interesting compared to their predecessors. But by that time, there will already be competitors in the market capable of intensifying this rivalry. As users, we can only observe the confrontation between these two titans over our wallets.
