The following is a paraphrased summary of Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry by Albert Pike. The original text is written in a sometimes disjointed and haphazard manner, so please be aware of this while listening. Lecture One: The First Degree Apprentice, The 12-Inch Rule, and The Common Gavel. Unregulated force is both destruction and ruin and engenders neither growth nor progress. The blind force of the masses must be regulated and managed by intellect. The rule of right and justice. Revolutions fail due to ill-regulated force. The future of humanity requires a history of noble and courageous men who confront and defy unrighteous power in order to light its way. There are forces of immense societal evil with insatiable appetite birthed by ignorance and misery. However, when correctly employed with discretion by the rule of wisdom, these coalesce to The Brute and mighty force.

of a hammer, yet the same Titanic Force when yielded incorrectly fortifies tyrants and infests their armies, who more often seek to enslave than liberate. Force is the mace of Steel. Passive obedience to tyranny reduces this physical might to spiritual weakness, and tyrants use the force of the people to subjugate themselves. The hammer or Mace of force, unaccountable to civil power, is an armed tyranny. A free government, once established, cannot maintain the actions or existence of this popular force; it must be restrained. The force of the people in action, symbolized by the gavel, regulated by acting within the law, symbolized by the 12-inch rule, engenders Liberty, equality, and fraternity. The rough ashlar is defined as a stone as taken from the Quarry in its rude and natural state. The perfect ashlar is a stone made ready by the hands of an apprentice to be adjusted by the working tools of the fellow craft. The rough ashlar refers to the rude and unorganized masses; the perfect ashar to

the state governing in harmony with the will of the people and their constitution, the latter of which is symbolized by the perfect Cube. Observing a cube from a plane higher than that in which it lies, in such a way that one edges towards us, we see three faces: the top and two sides. We can also observe nine edges and seven vertices; however, there are three hidden faces, giving us six in total, three hidden edges, yielding 12 in total, and one hidden vertex, giving us eight in total. The number 12 was called perfect as it contained within it the sacred numbers of three, five, and seven. Five and seven sum to 12, as do three and nine, where nine is 3 * 3. Three, in turn, is the sum of the monad and the doad. In mathematics, the first perfect number is six, corresponding to the number of faces on the cube. The cube became the symbol for Perfection, produced by force and acting by rule. The perfect ashar has as its three visible faces those mirroring the Constitution and law of the state, the executive.

legislative and Judiciary branches. The three hidden faces of the cube represent the three-fold soul of the state: its Vitality, spirit, and intellect, expressed by Liberty, equality, and fraternity. Prayer plays an essential part of masonry and its ceremonies. It is the aspiration of the Soul towards the one supreme deity of infinite intelligence, symbolized as an architect, thought, meditation, and prayer. Conquer the shadow world and deliver the soul to Enlightenment. We should not dismiss prayer because we cannot directly influence God. All is predestined by the force of nature, which is his hand. So too, our efforts to change our own fate. Prayer, like faith and love, is a Sublime Force, each word of which imparts ripples in The Ether, which Echo throughout eternity. Every Lodge is a temple, and all therein symbolic. The Temple of Solomon was decorated with symbols of the universe, the planets, constellations, seasons, and greater luminaries, and its Master Hermes was represented therein by hurum. An assemblage of Freemasons is

termed a lodge, and the room in which they meet, which represents some part of Solomon's Temple, is also termed the lodge. This quote: inner Lodge is held erect by three great Columns of wisdom, strength, and beauty, without which nothing can endure. This is the holy Temple wherein God resides. The wisdom and power of God are infinite and forever in equilibrium. From there results Perfect Harmony; hence, wisdom, power, and Harmony constitute One Masonic Triad. Wisdom is the top of the scales, keeping in equilibrium the opposite expression of contraries, the existence of evil and the infinite wisdom, goodness, and mercy of God. The columns on either side of the lodge entrance represent those on each side of the Great Eastern Gateway of the temple. They yakin, meaning 'he shall establish' on the right, and boas, meaning 'in it is strength' on the left. Yet even these columns were copies of those at the entrance to the Temple of melart TI, consecrated to the winds and fire. yod y is yakin, which is the upright and active Force. V is Boaz, which is the power and

beauty of the passive Force. The dimensions of the lodge are as limitless as the mind and include all things under Heaven. It is to heaven the Mason aspires, climbing Jacob's Ladder, whose first three rungs represent faith in God, hope in immortality, and charity towards mankind. Its base in the terrestrial realm and its summit high aloft in the heavens. On all monuments to mithas are seven PES consecrated to the seven planets of antiquity, as were the seven lamps of the golden candelaum in Solomon's Temple. The human soul must ascend the seven spheres or ladder to arrive back into the infinite from whence it came. The Holy Bible, square, and compass are the great lights in masonry, termed the furniture of the lodge, and by their light, a Mason must walk and work. The square with its right angle measures plain geometry of Earth and represents the body. The compass being circular describes the spherical trigonometry of the heavens and the essence of the Soul.

yet both points of the compass lie beneath the square, indicating the presence of the spiritual within the most mundane duties of our Earthly life. The three Sublime lights of masonry are the Sun, the Moon, and the master of the lodge. The sun is the generative power of the deity, and God is the source of its light; hence, the sun is the visible image of God. The moon represents the passive capacity of the female to produce Nature by way of the life-giving male energy. The master of light and life is the Supreme deity manifest above and through them both. The lodge master and his senior and Junior wardens symbolize the master of light and Light, the Sun and the Moon, respectively. This is a Triune deity of Horus, Osiris, and Isis, Mercury, the Sun, and the Moon. The sun represents the actual and fecundating rays, which reflect off the moon, yet both of their lights illuminate Horus. Thus, the equilateral triangle containing within it the omnific cabalistic yod is Born, the Mosaic.

pavement indented tessell and blazing star, the latter of which represents Divine Providence or the star in the east, are termed the ornaments of the lodge. The tated pavement of black and white is representative of the principles of good and evil, as it was in Egyptian Antiquity. The original meaning of the Blazing star was representative of Sirius and the god Anubis. Later, it was assigned to Horus or Hermes and finally to the sacred pentacle of the Magi. The American lodges have enclosed in the Triangle AG, as opposed to a yod representing the Supreme deity. This unmanifest deity is the point of infinite potential within the circumpunct or solar symbol. This is the emblem of Osiris, and the yud in the center manifests as a creative light of the universe. The lodge has six Jewels: the square, level, and Plum or pendulum are the movable Jewels traditionally passed from one brother to another, and the immovable Jewels are the rough ashlar, perfect ashlar, and the tracing.

Every brother is himself the point inside the circumpunct, and the bounds of the circle serve to guide his conduct righteously. The duties of a Mason are to infuse Society with knowledge and ideas which gradually harmonize the human race with their Destiny. This is the duty of the initiate Apprentice to be engaged in without fear of inadequate influence, as even the smallest kindness imparts on the infinite. We must have faith in the Justice and wisdom of God, hope for the future, and loving kindness for those who falter. Truth conquers the Vitality of illusion very slowly, yet the morality and philosophy of masonry never cease in their Duty nor succumb to discouragement. The Eternal duties of Masonry are kindness to our Brethren through philanthropy, relief to the distressed without resentment, and to be seek and learn the truth. The four cardinal virtues of masonry are Temperance, fortitude, prudence, and Justice where the
