I'm not really the type to get too worked up over things. However, when it comes to running, I've been good at it since kindergarten. I was always told I was a fast runner. In elementary school, I was always the last runner in the relay team, representing my class. I thought I was really fast. Even when I went to high school in the U.S., I did some sports, and I continued to run in college. So, I have some experience in that area. Last year, I ran with the kids during their sports events. Now that the season is here again, they said, Dad, let's give it a shot! But why is it that when older guys run, they...

The principal came and said, Be careful, parents, because many people tend to fall and get hurt. The man in front laughed and said, Oh, it seems like a lot of people are falling. How strange! He reassured us, Don't worry. Then that man rolled over, and I thought, Aren't there differences in teams? So, it was completely impossible to catch up. I was the last runner, and when I got the baton about 15 meters behind, I ran my best but lost. Our team lost, but now my father is here. 

Okay, everyone, he said. The atmosphere was still tense, and I couldn't shake off my disappointment. Even three days later, the feeling of defeat lingers. Today, I think we should learn about Rice University. The university is expanding and increasing its student population, nearly doubling its size.

I plan to expand significantly, aiming for about ten years. This school is progressing to become the Harvard of the South, with a solid foundation. However, it was a bit small, and as we increase in size, it still feels small compared to what we aspire to be. Previously, we were at an SS size, but now we are around S size. Regardless, we are making progress and gaining attention from prestigious universities. Students from Texas and other regions are already aware of this. People from the East and West coasts should also consider applying, as this program is excellent. I wanted to introduce it, so let's get started. Looking at the numbers from the Rice University Office, we might be able to grow a bit. You can see the cycle for 2023-2024 is approximately 40,000.

Over 2,000 applications have come in, and the acceptance rate is about 50%. If we look at the statistics, the admission rate is 88%. Out of the 32,000 applications sent out, 2,500 were accepted, and around 1,100 to 1,200 students actually paid and enrolled. This is the kind of statistics you can refer to. 

For the SAT, the bottom 25% score is around 1510, and for the ACT, it's 34, which is quite high. The top 25% score is around 160. So, the scores are distributed in such a way that most students fall within the range of 120 to 150. The middle 50% is where most applicants are located, and the upper tier is at 35. 

Now, this scoring system is somewhat strange; the upper 25% has a score of 35, while the lower 25% has a score of 34. There isn’t much difference, so does this have any significance? It seems that there is a wider range in between.

49% of the students are male, and 51% are female, which is pretty balanced. The international student population is 14%, and half of the students are from outside Texas. The absorption rate for Texas students is about 40%. This is the data we have. 

Moving on, this is from the Rice University newspaper. The acceptance rate is 7.5%, the lowest in Rice's history. This was recorded in 2024, last year. I expect that this year it might break that record and continue to decline. 

There were 239 students accepted out of 2,000 applications, resulting in a 7.5% acceptance rate, which is a historical record. The graph beautifully illustrates this trend. It shows that the acceptance rate was highest in 2018, then sharply declined during the pandemic. After that, universities saw a brief rise in acceptance rates due to the pandemic. Many students deferred their enrollment during that time, leading to this situation.

So, suddenly, I went to college for about a year, and then I tried to find my original pattern again. Now, the rate is at 7.7%, and at the beginning of this year, it was 7.5%. The news related to this is that the SEP rate is decreasing. What that means is that R expend undergraduate is 48 million. Now, the question is, for the next five or six years until 2024, we've been increasing the number of incoming students by 200, 300, 400 each year. At the start, we increased it by about 800 students, and we kept increasing it. Originally, there were small numbers at places like Harvard or Columbia, where the student count was around 7,000 to 7,500, and if it went a little over, it would reach 8,000. The University of Pennsylvania has about 11,000, and Cornell has around 16,000. These are the sizes of prestigious universities. If a school has around 7,000 to 8,000 students, it is considered small. However, this has decreased significantly, meaning it went below 3,000.

The school has set a goal of 4,800 students. I looked for articles, and I found an old one from 2021, which is about three and a half years ago. It mentioned that they aimed to increase the number of students by 20% by 2025. The president and the school have been working hard on this. Over the last decade, from 2004 to now, the number of students has increased from 2,900 to 3,800. That’s a significant jump. Now, the school is approaching around 4,500 students, which means they have really increased their numbers. If you look at it roughly, going from 3,000 to 4,500 is a 50% growth. The school is continuously expanding and building more dormitories to accommodate more students. Currently, as of 2024, the school has about 80% of its undergraduates living in dorms. They aim to provide affordable housing for all students, from freshmen to seniors.

Even if the combined number is 80%, the housing situation is at a level where it can accommodate students. This is important because housing prices are high these days, and living expenses are increasing significantly. It's not ideal to live on campus. I'm in my third year, and living in the dorms feels a bit embarrassing. So, instead of living in the dorms, I suggest using that money to buy books or get another computer for studying. There's no need to unnecessarily live in an apartment elsewhere. In some schools, if you mention where you're from, you might feel sorry because their dormitory situation isn't great. Everyone is waiting in line to get into the dorms because they are expensive, and even then, there aren't enough spaces available. However, here, 80% is doing quite well.

I brought in good photos and moved them to the display. I really trusted the director. In my opinion, this essay was really good, and that's why the results turned out differently. You're doing a great job for my children. When you come to the page, it's the Office of Institutional Research. It's a school that collects statistics. Originally, I thought Carnegie Mellon did the best job of this, but this place might have even more statistics. There are many schools that do this kind of work. But look, there are missions and tests. They have statistics under admissions. I'll take a closer look. They also have statistics on the grades and on the graduate program.

If you go further down the categories, you'll see the enrollment statistics. This includes the demographic distribution of students currently attending. There are also statistics on which majors are currently popular and which ones are seeing a decline. It gives an overview of the academic fields that people are mainly studying. All of this data is presented in graphs that you have created. 

There are more details below, but let's touch on a few key points. You can find the link in the video description; just click on it to access more information. I don’t want this video to get too long, so I’ll focus on the essential points. 

When you look under missions, you will see that the gray represents the number of applications, the blue indicates the universities that have accepted students, and the green shows the actual number of students who enrolled in their first year. It seems that the enrollment rate is about 50%. This is the issue we need to examine closely.

The trend is going up continuously. The number of successful students is steadily increasing. Right now, there are about 1,100 students; last year there were 1,000. Here, it’s 1,200. In the past, it was around 900 students. We are consistently raising those numbers. If you look at these trends, you can see them all at a glance. Another thing to consider is the average SAT scores; they are predictable. You can also see the students' information. When you look closely, you’ll find that out of state, there are 3,100 full-time students. If you look at the total, it seems to be around 8,000 when you include graduate students. There are about 2,000 international students, which makes up 38% out of state and 35% in-state. The international student percentage is 26%.

There is also a table, and since we are very interested in our majors, let's take a look. If we look at this graph, you can see that the most popular major at our university is Business, with 1,100 students. This square is the largest. Next, if we look at the squares, Electrical Computer Engineering has 154 students, Computer Science has 430 students, and Social Science has 378 students. There are also related majors in the Engineering division, with 540 students in Engineering and 520 in Science. The Life and Biosciences have 320 students. This is the distribution we have. The top three are likely Business, Computer Science, and Social Science. Engineering is always in the mix. If we organize it this way, you can check the link and explore various aspects. If the table changes, you can also look for the numbers and percentages, focusing on the higher percentages.

I think it would be a bit easier. This is something our high school counselor used to say. I've mentioned this a few times on YouTube. I went to college, and during my first year, I took an elective course called Introduction to Psychology. By the way, our high school didn't offer psychology, and I didn't take AP classes. I thought it would be fun and easy, so I applied for it. Over 2,000 students enrolled in the class, and it was taught by a very famous professor. The content in the book was slightly different from what was on the exam. I memorized the book word for word, but I ended up getting 17 out of 20 questions correct on the exam. I got three wrong, which gave me a C. I've never received a C in my life, so you can imagine how much I cried. I called my high school counselor to talk about it, thinking this was related to college.

In the first exam that took place after a month and a half, I feel like I might get kicked out of school because my major is struggling. Coming to such a large school, I had previously been at a very small school and then moved to a bigger private school. Even though I was lost and cried a lot, I was laughing a lot, and I told you to go to a small university. Did you really think that going to a big school would mean you would keep doing well? You did okay at our school, but stepping into a bigger world is tough. But don’t worry, I know you will definitely find a way. After hanging up, call me again in a month to let me know how it went. I was really upset, but anyway, you found a way. Then you got an A on the next exam. Even if you had gone to a smaller school, I believe you would have done well. I've seen this happen with our students over the past 24 years.

I realized that if I had gone to a smaller college, it might have been a better experience for me. Rice University is relatively small, and I feel like it's not a great ending. Anyway, today, I heard our poor principal giving a speech, and he mentioned that our school’s team has lost for 14 years in a row. So, this year, he said, Let's fight, team! and started off the event. My daughter is currently in the third grade, and she came to elementary school this year. In the first and second grades, she was on the white team, but this year, the teams changed, and she was on the black team, which won. For the first time in 14 years, the white team lost three years in a row in the first, second, and third grades. I was really upset when I came home, and I felt bad about it. It's not like someone decides this; it seems like they just divide the teams by alphabetical order. It’s frustrating for her, and I just can't shake off this shock.

Everyone, the weather is nice, so it's a really good season for the students exercising outside at our school. Students in the eastern region have similar weather to Seoul, so make sure to play a lot, run a lot, and maintain your physical fitness while also studying hard. Teachers, I'll see you next time.
