My father was a physical education teacher in Andong, and my mother was also a teacher. So, it seems like I come from a family of educators. My father is not an athlete but is the head of the judo department at Yongin University, and he must be a very intimidating figure at other schools. In high school, I actually considered dropping out. I was living in Gyeongbuk, Andong, and I was thinking about it.

In the second year, I dropped out and took the high school equivalency exam to get back to Seoul quickly, so I needed to start practicing acting secretly. I was planning to drop out, but my father did a spinning kick to stop me. He majored in judo, and he combined it with taekwondo, saying he would work hard at it. So, I came back, attended school, and secretly started acting. While doing so, I thought about how my father's spinning kick and martial arts mastery were involved in all this. However, Seung-hyun and I share this experience, and I can imagine how angry my father must have been. But Joseph's path was somewhat different from ours because he was an excellent student. The reason is that my father did taekwondo, and Joseph got hit with a flying kick. I also had my father doing taekwondo.

My father only graduated from the business administration department, but he also stopped his studies at that point. He really had a lot of trouble, so he was kicked out. Meanwhile, I received a scholarship throughout my four years at university, and I was admitted to Kyung Hee University’s English Literature department. I didn’t study very well, though. I also did a lot of part-time jobs, like vacuum-sealing fish at my friend's factory.

I had been consistently doing it, and the fact is that when I go to the set, there are no pre-meetings or anything like that. For example, in the middle of the drama, I might be called to play a role where I bump into the main character of episode 16 and spill a drink. It makes me feel a bit uneasy and intimidated.
