Today, I will analyze the changes brought by the introduction of the high school credit system next year, the fifth-grade internal assessment system, and the 2018 college entrance exam reform that current third-year middle school students will face. What exactly are the changes, and how do they differ from the current situation? 

Starting next year, there will be various changes, not just for third-year students. One of the major improvements is that for the current sixth graders who will enter middle school next year, the internal assessments will include the first-year middle school curriculum. Specifically, up until now, first-year students were under the free semester system, which meant that there were no exams for the entire first year. Therefore, when applying to specialized high schools, first-year internal assessments were not considered, and only the second and third-year assessments were taken into account. However,

Starting next year, when sixth graders transition to middle school, only one semester in the sixth grade will be designated as a free semester, while the other semester will involve exams. In contrast, the second semester of the third year will be a career-linked semester, meaning there will be no exams. Instead, new units related to subjects and career paths will be introduced, along with creative experiential activities focused on career development. This means that schools will help students understand in advance what subjects they can choose when they go to high school. There is also content indicating that schools will utilize autonomous study time to facilitate the operation of elective subjects related to career paths. So, what will happen? Currently, specialized high schools have been reflecting grades from the first semester of the second year to the second semester of the third year. If the second semester of the third year is not reflected, then the grades from the first semester of the first year and the second semester of the second year will be affected by the free semester system.

The remaining semesters that are not subject to the application will inevitably reflect in the grades for specialized high schools. In fact, we can say that the semester for specialized high school preparation starts from the first year of middle school. This is a key change that will begin next year. When we conduct actual consultations, we find that many people are not aware of these changes, but it is crucial to know and prepare for these significant shifts in advance. 

Another important change next year is that the grading system will shift from a genius grading system to a five-tier grading system. Based on current middle school students, approximately 30 to 40% of students receive an A. This means that a significant number of students are achieving A grades, which is a substantial amount. Among those, currently...

If we look at the criteria, 4% is considered the first grade. The first grade, and then 11% is the second grade. So, this is the first grade and this is the second grade. Next, we have 21%, and if we add numbers to this, 21% and 23% become the third grade. The third grade. After that, 40% becomes the fourth grade. The fourth grade. This is how it is represented. So later, when students prepare for high school after middle school, they might receive grades of first, second, third, or fourth. Here, the first grade refers to the top 4%, which we often call the top students who can actually enter prestigious universities. Most of the students in this range are those who rank around the top of their class. Then, here is the second grade.

If we combine them, it's 11%. So, what happens with my friends? My friends are those who are in the middle of discussing the flood in Gyeonggi Province, or students from Chung-Ang University, Kyung Hee University, Foreign Language University, City University, or perhaps Konkuk University, Dongguk University, Hongik University, and Sookmyung Women's University. Students from places like Gyeongdong, Hongik, and Sookmyung are usually around the second grade level. Then, the friends who are in the third grade level, from here to 23, are almost at the end of the Seoul area. It's almost at the very end, so we can say they are on the verge. Students who are at the fourth grade level cannot get into the Seoul area. They go outside of Seoul to schools like Kyungdong University, Anyang University, or schools located in Gangwon Province. So, during middle school, everyone had straight A's, but from the point of entering high school, the grades get divided into levels 1, 2, 3, and 4. As you can see from the ratio, the first and second grades account for 11%, while the third grade is around 40%.

The remaining 30% were showing phenomena where students were receiving grades of 3 or 4. So when they went to high school, I thought that getting a grade of 1 was originally impossible; it was difficult. However, there were friends who tried to make an effort, and there were also cases in the opposite direction. Regardless, there were students who tried to put in some effort. So what about the students who received a grade of 1 later on? They were the ones who had done a lot of advanced studies or had taken intensive courses, especially those who had prepared for specialized high schools but unfortunately did not get in. Most of them were going from a grade of 1 to 2, which is the current reality. We had prepared with this information, but from now on, this will no longer be the case; the grading system will simply change to a 5-grade system. So, regarding the grade of 1 that was mentioned earlier...

Friends in the second tier are all going to become first tier. The first tier consists of those in the top 10, while here, at the end, there are some in the third and fourth tiers. Right? Just a little bit, just this much, this much. So, all the friends will become second tier. 

Now, if we think about it with 100 people, those ranked from first to tenth are in the first tier, while those ranked 11th to 34th are in the second tier. So, who were the friends ranked from first to tenth? In the past, the friends who ranked from first to tenth were like this: those in the first tier, including the top three, were students who went to schools like Seonggyungwan or those who alternated between there and other prestigious schools, or went to medical school. The friends who were around the 10th rank aimed to go to schools like Gyeonggi or Kwangwoon.

Now, they end up in a situation where they receive the same grade. If they fall into the first-grade category, for instance, if I was a friend who ranked 10th, and I suddenly got into the first-grade category, then I would receive the same grade as someone who is ranked first. So, regardless of where I apply, I was actually ranked 10th. In the past, I was preparing for schools like Kookmin University or Seonggyeongwan University, but now, being classified as a first-grade student allows me to apply to top universities like Seoul National University or the prestigious Yonsei and Korea Universities. The only difference is how we can distinguish between them. What is the method of differentiation? The important factor is how the students' school records look. Depending on their activities in their school records, friends may have the opportunity to attend good universities or not.

This means that we were originally ranked first in our school, but if we don't manage our student records at all, we will be perceived as being ranked tenth. Typically, in a high school with 300 students, being ranked thirtieth is how we are seen. So, the student who was originally ranked first appears to be ranked thirtieth. Conversely, even if someone is originally ranked thirtieth, if they manage their student records well, they can present themselves as if they were ranked first. This is the core of the new high school credit system. The ranking in front is the most crucial factor for getting into top universities. In the past, the ranking system was very detailed, so when we chose high schools, we would say, Let's go to a school where we can do well in grades, or Let's go to a school where we can get good grades even if we don't study much. However, moving forward, the most important aspect of choosing a high school will be how well the school manages student records and what subjects they can select effectively.

The first-tier friends could clearly understand the situation, while the second-tier friends, who are classified as first and second-tier based on middle school standards, received their grades during middle school. Among those who received grades, the friends who engaged in advanced studies and deepened their knowledge are classified as first-tier, while those who did not are mostly classified as second-tier. What about the second-tier friends? Some of them aimed to attend decent schools in Seoul, while others were not even able to consider schools in that area. The only methods available for managing this situation are through managing their school records and the college entrance exam. Therefore, these factors become the most important elements. When we choose a high school based on middle school standards, we consider these criteria in our high school selection.

The subjects include exploring social problems, finance and economic life, ethical issues, climate change and a sustainable world, and the history and culture of science. It is stated that the exploration of environmental changes and ecological fusion science will be evaluated absolutely, not relatively. 

I will take a look at the table to explain each subject and how they are categorized. The question is, what should we consider when we become first-year high school students regarding the subjects we need to choose? This will cover the subjects and elective courses, starting with travel geography, exploring historical aspects of travel geography, modern society, social problem exploration, finance, economic life, ethical issues, climate change, a sustainable world, and the history and culture of science.

The subject of Environmental Change, Ecology, and Converging Sciences is the only one that is graded absolutely; all other subjects are graded relatively. Up until now, in middle school and through the first year of high school, the general selection has been graded relatively, while the latter part was graded absolutely. However, the important point is that not only this subject but all subjects taught in the third year will change to relative grading. In the case of science, for example, if we look at it, physics becomes Physics 1, chemistry is Chemistry 1, Earth science is Earth Science 1, and biology is Biology 1. These subjects will be structured in such a way that students will have to choose among them. Depending on the choices made, the methods for determining university admissions will vary.

The concept of having is the biggest key in this educational curriculum. Depending on which subjects I choose, it will determine whether universities will selectively choose this student or not. Therefore, during high school selection, it is important to consider whether this subject is offered at the school and whether it is an essential subject for our school. For example, if I want to go into space science, I need to select general elective subjects like Earth Science, and in the career elective subjects, I must complete courses related to Earth Science, such as Earth System Science, Life on Other Planets, and Space Science. Only then can I apply for programs related to space science. However, if there aren't many students choosing these subjects, and if some decide that they don't need to take them, what will happen to those students? They might have to take this subject online or through a joint academic program with another school.

There will be situations where you go to school and attend classes, and the question arises: can you actually receive proper grades? This could lead to problems. Therefore, when choosing a high school, it is important to check if the school offers the career path you desire, whether they manage student records well, and if they provide proper support for the college entrance exam. It is also essential to see if the learning environment is conducive. Choosing a high school through this process will be the most advantageous. This is what the high school credit system is about. Students can selectively choose subjects that align with their career paths from a wide range of subjects. Once the school offers those subjects, students can complete them. So, when should students learn about this? They should learn about it in the third year of middle school. However, this year, the current third-year middle school students did not have that option available to them.

Next year, we will need to make choices, which will undoubtedly present significant challenges. The difficulty lies in the need to select a career path in advance, starting from the sixth grade. This indicates the necessity of thinking ahead about such processes and preparing accordingly. Now, let's examine how the college entrance exam (Suneung) subjects are changing. 

The subjects for the Suneung are as follows: currently, these are the subjects taught in the first year of high school. The subjects for the first year of high school are integrated social studies and integrated science, which are the only subjects that will actually be included in the Suneung. The current subjects known as Subject 1 and Subject 2 will not be included in the Suneung. They will not be included in the exam.

In the college entrance exam, there are no subjects from the exploration curriculum. So, what will students do? They might think, Since this won't come up in the exam, let's just coast through high school and not attend cram schools. After all, they might believe that they can just focus on the regular admission process. However, that's not the case. Even during the regular admission process, there will be evaluations based on the subjects the students have taken. This is one of the main features of the new high school credit system. Among the elective subjects, those that are taught in high school include Korean language, reading and writing, calculus, statistics, English 1, and English 2. These subjects are specifically designated as subjects for the college entrance exam. This means that the exam will be conducted in an integrated manner without distinction between liberal arts and sciences. The subjects that are not selected for the college entrance exam will later be connected to the students' career paths when they apply to universities.

When making important choices, it is crucial to ensure that students continue to study the subject until the end of their third year in high school. This has become the most important key point this time. So, how has it changed? Currently, for students in the third year of middle school who will enter college in 2028, the evaluation methods for the college entrance exam and school grades have been restructured to allow students studying according to the high school credit system to plan their career paths. How has it changed? A unified and integrated college entrance exam system has been introduced. This means that currently, whether students choose science or liberal arts subjects leads to a division. Students who select science subjects tend to score higher and gain admission to prestigious universities when they transition to liberal arts. Meanwhile, liberal arts students face challenges in gaining admission to universities.

There were difficulties, but we are going to eliminate those aspects and focus on common subjects. In Korean, students will choose one from common reading, legal studies, and language and media. Previously, they had to select one from reading and literature, which was divided into legal studies and language and media based on whether they were in the humanities or sciences. Now, we plan to integrate these into one common subject, combining legal studies, language, reading, and writing. This is to reduce confusion between the humanities and sciences, so we will simplify it into one subject.

In mathematics, we will have common subjects like Algebra 2, and students will need to choose one from probability and statistics, calculus, or geometry. Most students in the humanities will likely choose probability and statistics, while those in the sciences will lean towards calculus or geometry. To avoid confusion, we will merge these subjects into a common curriculum.

The subjects are all the same, so they have been changed to include algebra, calculus, and probability statistics. Therefore, we can say that the SAT itself has changed the math portion for liberal arts students. As for the inquiry subjects, until now, science students conducted scientific inquiries while liberal arts students engaged in social inquiries. Instead of that, it was decided to combine the integrated social studies and integrated science that were taught in high school and have everyone take them together. Until now, science inquiry had eight subjects, and social inquiry had nine subjects, making a total of 17 subjects from which two were chosen. However, the most important core change is to combine them and allow students to select two subjects. This means that there will be no distinction between liberal arts and science, and we need to consider how this can be advantageous. When we evolved into foreign language high schools,

When I entered the foreign language high school and chose the science track, I faced difficulties because I didn't take science subjects for the actual college entrance exam. So, even if you attend a foreign language high school, there should be elements that ensure you don't fall behind when you choose science subjects. This should be one of the considerations when selecting a high school. 

Now, this is the issue. Earlier, if there are students who say they will focus solely on studying for the college entrance exam and neglect their school studies, what problems might arise? In the case of the regular admission process, it is natural that for early admission, the school records and academic achievements in the subjects are reviewed, and an interview is conducted in the second stage. This is because, to understand the students' grades and such, the school needs to conduct its own exams. However, there are also issues with the regular admission process. In the evaluation process, in the second stage, it is stated that both the college entrance exam and the student records will be thoroughly examined. This means that they will look at the subjects completed in the student records. Seoul National University announced that they have plans to consider these factors starting from 2018. So, how can we think about this? Should we show what we presented earlier? In the subjects shown earlier, based on the college entrance exam, I can choose my major depending on whether it is physics, chemistry, or Korean literature. The subjects I select, including mathematics, will differ based on this choice. The core of this proposal is that they will select students by looking at which subjects they have completed and their grades. Therefore, it is essential to manage not only the college entrance exam but also the internal grades meticulously, which is the most significant feature of the new high school credit system.

When students are preparing for university, there are core subjects that need to be taken into account. For example, if one is going to study computer science, there are essential subjects that must be included. If you apply to Kyung Hee University for Software Convergence, Korea University for Data Science, Sungkyunkwan University for Software, or Yonsei University for IT Convergence, core subjects like calculus and linear algebra must be included. Additionally, probability and statistics, as well as mathematics for artificial intelligence, must be completed.

Now, if someone wants to study medicine, for instance, at Kyung Hee University or Korea University, there are also core subjects that must be taken. These include calculus, general chemistry, biology, and physics. Specifically, students should complete subjects like chemistry I and II, and biology I and II by their second year.

You need to understand that in medicine, it is important to meet the actual recommended subjects and core subjects. This means that when selecting students at Seoul National University, they use a similar method to what we discussed here. Therefore, when it comes to the regular admissions process, the content related to student records must be fully included. The core of this high school credit system is that not only the CSAT (College Scholastic Ability Test) but also the management of grades must be thorough. Especially in the case of the current third-year high school students, there are many subjects that are evaluated absolutely. There have been many career-related subjects, so there was some leeway. However, starting this year, for the middle school students entering high school, even if the grades are evaluated on a ranking system, it is essential to manage them thoroughly because it is still a relative evaluation.

Within the grades, the boundaries are quite wide, and because the intervals are broad, the actual differences in grades can vary significantly depending on how well students manage their student records. Therefore, it has become necessary to manage student records thoroughly. When choosing a high school, it is essential to make a careful decision based on this process.
