I'd like to demonstrate Tell the Story. And I'd like to be the demonstratee. Right, and you have a story in mind. I do. One that I thought was a bit resolved, but maybe not. How long did we just talk about it?

20 seconds? Something like that, yes. And you got it back. Well, I got pieces of it back, yes. I got worked up a bit. Right. How old is the story, how old were you? I was 16 years old,

on the mound pitching baseball. So we're going to do Tell the Story, which means you're going to tell me the story in a minute, not quite yet. I'm sure you know the instructions, but we're doing a demonstration, so I will deliver them to you.

First let's find out, how long does the event last? A minute or a minute and a half. How many crescendos do you expect? Probably 2. And it's a minute and a half for both of those crescendos?

Both of them are within about a minute and a half. Actually if I really think about it, the whole thing collapses down into about 10 seconds. OK. So what would the title of the story be? "I almost died". That's not dramatic.

No, not dramatic at all, sorry. And so if you almost died, how intense would that be from 0 to 10? I'm probably fooling myself a little bit. My guess is I'm probably a 6 or so.

But if I really got into it, I might be higher. For the moment, I'm assessing a 6. OK, so I'm thinking it's best to do some global rounds before we... Yes, at the time it was a 46.

So it's come down quite a bit. We're going to do some global rounds. We're going to try to take the edge off before you tell the story. So follow along with me. Even though I almost died and I'm intense at a 6,

I deeply and completely accept myself. I almost died. This ‘I almost died’ story. I almost died. If that was a 6 or 7 before, get back to that and see. Well, as you can tell from my breath

I'd say a 3 or 4. OK, would you like to do another global round to see if we can get it down further? I don't think it's necessary. We may find out otherwise, but I don't think so.

You said it might be surprising. Well, if you feel comfortable starting to tell the story, then I'll deliver you the instructions. What you want to do is find a neutral point, before anything was happening in the story. Everything was safe. From that neutral point,

you're going to tell the story chronologically. Just frame by frame. Whenever you feel any kind of intensity, physically, emotionally, anything at all, you're going to stop and we'll tap through that. Because that means we have a disruption to address.

By tapping through it, we have an opportunity to not only clear that disruption, but minimize your emotional pain, so that we don't end up at a 46. OK, right. So, if you're ready find a neutral point and start.

So I was 16 years old and we were having a baseball game in the Colt league, like Little League but it's for kids that are 15 and 16 years old. I was going to pitch that night. Before the game started,

there was a player on the other team, a tall lanky kid who's name was Jim Cross. I was warming up to pitch before the game and he comes up and he makes some comment. I forget it exactly, but it was something like

"I'm going to eat you for lunch." Meaning whatever I threw at him was... Does that cause you any intensity? No, that's kind of funny at the moment, although we're getting there. You have some intensity on anticipating. I'm jumping forward like we tend to do.

OK, well how intense is your jumping forward? It's maybe a 5, 4 or 5 or so. Let's do a little work on that. Alright. Even though I'm anticipating something that's coming up in this story,

I deeply and completely accept myself. What's coming up? That thing that's coming up. The part of the story that's coming up. Let's assess your intensity. It's better. 3 or 4 or something like that. You're comfortable with going forward?

Anyway, so he makes this comment to me, and I don't know what I said back to him, but something like "fat chance". He basically thought he was going to own me at the plate. I wasn't going to throw anything by him.

So the game goes on and we're probably in the fifth inning, and Jim Cross comes to the plate. It's night time and... Do you have any intensity imagining him at the plate? Yes, because I know what's going to happen.

So you're still anticipating? Yes. So at this point are you... I'm probably a 5. Even though Jim Cross is standing at that plate. Even though Jim Cross, a left-handed batter is standing at that plate, I deeply and completely accept myself.

Jim Cross at the plate. Long, tall, lanky Jim Cross at the plate. We're using basic language here. I know. Jim Cross at the plate. Once again, better. How much better? We're probably back down to a 3 again.

So anyway, I don't know what the count was, but at one point the catcher signals a curve ball. It's a ball that is supposed to curve and fool the batter. It's also a ball that comes a little slower than the fastball.

Anyway, I wind up and I throw this curve ball. The minute it leaves my fingertips, I remember saying to myself "Oops, I want that one back". Because it didn't fool anybody, including Jim Cross. Do you have intensity on "oops"?

Yes. Is the intensity on the oops, or is it on what's coming up? No, it's what's coming. There's a crescendo coming that's big. How high are you on anticipating that crescendo? I'm probably back up to 4 or 5.

By the time I get there I may be higher than I think, but 4 or 5. Even though I wanted that curve ball back, I deeply and completely accept myself. I wanted that one back. So when you think about the oops

and letting go of the ball, how is that? It won't be fun when I get there, but I'm better. 3 or so. Anyway, I watched the ball which seemingly took 2 weeks to get there, and Jim Cross is standing there.

He watches that thing come and it breaks and curves. It wasn't even in the strike zone. It was down around his ankles, and with that big long bat he stepped right into it, and hit it like he was hitting a golf ball off the tee.

When you're 60 feet, 6 inches away throwing a baseball, and it gets that far away it looks like a golf ball. He hit that thing with everything he had and it went RIGHT by my ear, just like that.

It came so fast, I couldn't lift my glove to deflect it, catch it, I was just like that. How intense are you now? Big time! 6 or 7. 600 or 700? In there someplace. The thing went from a golf ball to a basketball.

What's the essence of the intensity? Was it the surprise or the threat to your life? The threat to my life. If that ball had been this much over, right between my eyes, I couldn't have moved. Imagine that, a ball hitting you right in the eye.

Scared spitless. Something, help. Alright, 6 or 7. Even though that ball almost killed me, I deeply and completely accept myself. That ball almost killed me. It almost killed me. Think about that ball coming right past your ear.

Actually, first think about him at the plate, and you see the golf ball, and he's swinging the bat. That's not what I focus on. I focus on that instant. I was helpless, I really was. Boom, I could do nothing.

So, helpless from 0 to 10, how intense is that? 7 or 8, it's still there. It almost killed me, we didn't measure that after the round. How intense is it? There are still probably some aspects

to that crescendo. That's interesting, ‘it almost killed me’ is probably not very high. Is it a zero? I don't know about a zero, but I'm switching aspects. It's a helpless feeling. How helpless from 0 to 10?

I'd probably give it about a 7 or 8. I feel my face flush. Even though I was helpless, and my face is flushing, I deeply and completely accept myself. I was helpless and my face is flushing. That ended up being a bit of a tongue twister.

So, say I was helpless. That's less. So 0 to 10, what number would you give it? Probably a 2 or 3. Is your face flushing anymore, at all? Yes, but not from the event.

We're sitting here under some hot lights, and there's a little bit of that. It's probably worth another round. On helpless or are there other words we can use that describe it better? There was nothing I could do? I couldn't get out of the way.

I was trapped? That's a word. I couldn't get out of the way is something like helpless, but we can at least try that one. Does helpless work better for you? I think, I couldn't get out of the way is a little more charged.

It's like, I want to get out of the way, but I can't. How about, I'm frozen? Yes, that's a good one. If you say "I felt frozen", how intense is that? It's not high, 3 or so.

Even though I was frozen, I deeply and completely accept myself. I was frozen. A breath is good. There went a sigh. I'm going to close my eyes and try to get... Try to imagine that ball whizzing past your ear.

and see if you can feel frozen, see if you feel helpless. Well, I'm frozen and helpless, but I don't get worked up about it. It's more like that was then, this is now. Are you less worried that it's going to kill you?

Yes, because I know it didn't, but the 'going to kill me' thing was up earlier, but doesn't seem to be there. The helpless thing is low, I'm not even sure it's there. It's a little surprising

because you were so high just a few minutes ago. Yes, frozen. I may be a 1. On which part, the frozen? On the intensity in general. We have another crescendo after this, do we? Yes. That would have been higher,

it's more like a 2 or 3. I'm not getting much on helpless. OK, then let's continue through the story and see what happens. So the ball goes whizzing by my ear. It surprised me, and I'd never had an experience like that before,

so I didn't know what my reaction... This was the first time? Yes. When you're 16 you're invincible, especially if you're male and play sports. If you're a pitcher? Yes. Anyway, it goes bounding over second base

out into center field. The center fielder throws it back in. But I'm noticing that my legs are like rubber. They're wobbly. When you think about that, is there any intensity? It's not high, but it is noticeable, 3 or 4 maybe.

OK, just because your legs were rubbery, or is there a word for that experience? Rubbery is one word, thanks for the question. The other experience would be, "I'm out of control." It's like helpless, but this was out of control.

It's like my body is doing stuff to me that I had no idea it would do. Would that be more specific to your legs? I can't control my legs, or I can't control my body? That's a good question. To me, they're about the same.

You could use either language. OK, and you said 3 or 4? Yes. Even though I couldn't control my legs, I deeply and completely accept myself. I couldn't control my legs. There's my sigh. Well, I'm having a difficult time

even imagining my legs wobbling, so... Does that sound like 0 to you, less than 1? Well, it sounds like 0, there's just a bit more to the story. Right. So anyway, I'm there with these rubbery legs,

which I don't feel at the moment. I'm supposed to go up on the mound and pitch to the next batter, and I don't really know what's going on with my body. I know I'm scared, but of course I'm 16,

I'm macho and all that stuff, and you don't let anybody know you're scared. I was ready to cry. Do you have any intensity on that now? Minor. What is minor? 1 and a half or 2. Can we do something on that now?

Was it scared or ready to cry? Ready to cry and I was 16 years old. 16-year-old men don't cry. Even though... In front of all my teammates, and all the guys and the girls in the stands watching this game, my classmates,

everything else. Crying, no it doesn't work. So how about, even though I was ready to cry and I was on display? Ah, very good, OK. Even though I was ready to cry and I was on display, I deeply and completely accept myself.

I was ready to cry and I was on display. So, think about heading back up to the mound, and all those cute girls watching you. Studly boys and pretty girls. Interesting enough, because my legs aren't wobbly,

or I'm having a difficult time mentally getting the wobblies back, the fact that I'm on display doesn't seem to... OK, and ready to cry? It doesn't seem to bother me. That was only a 1 and a half.

Yes, it wasn't very much. I do remember calling the coach out, to ask him something. I don't even know what question, to buy time. I wasn't about to tell anybody. And I finally got on the mound and went on with it,

but as you can tell I really haven't forgotten. You think about calling the coach to the mound and what you're going to say to him. No, that's not charged. The coach is at the mound and you're telling him and...

No, I'm getting nothing on that, it's just something that happened. You expected that to hold some intensity. Well, yes but it's interesting because my legs aren't wobbling and this thing going by my ear. I wouldn't do it again,

It would be stupid to do it again. To throw Jim Cross a curve ball. Because it was dangerous. It literally was dangerous. I played softball and we coach baseball, and I've seen people get hit in the ear at third base.

That ball is hard, you know. It doesn't always happen just to the pitcher. Can you tell that story again from beginning to end, and we'll see if there's any intensity. I'll short circuit the thing before the game, Jim Cross watching me warm up.

Think about Jim Cross coming to the plate. You know who that guy is. He's coming to the plate. He has already taunted you. Big guy, got his ego involved a little bit, but that's not a part of it.

Big guy, long bat. I'm going to own you. And there goes the curve ball. I do wish I had the ball back, but there's no intensity on it, just the fact that I'd rather have it back. Goes by my ear out to center field.

Wobbly legs. Did you get him out? No. I never got him out. Not that time, not any other time. I don't know of any other time. What position did he play? I think he played left field.

Did you knock him a few? I don't know. I really didn't even know the guy very well. I don't know why he taunted me like that. Just an ego thing for the day. I've since seen Jim every ten years or so,

all the high school jocks we get together And I remember 10 or 20 years ago I came to one of these things and I said "Jim, how are you doing?" and he looked at me and he didn't know who I was.

I had to talk to him a bit, "Oh yes, now I remember". I didn't tell him that story. But anyway... So that story seems to be clear. Would you like to do a vivid visualization? I can do it. Just to clean it up.

I already threw a couple of tests while you were telling the story, and none of them seemed to trigger you. OK, so do a vivid visualization. You close your eyes and go through the story in your mind, but you're going to exaggerate the sights

and the sounds and the colors, and you're probably going to make Jim Cross really big. You’re going to make that ball really big as it goes by your ear. It's going to come faster. It's got to come faster, maybe it needs to be louder.

Hear the crack of the bat. Crack of the bat, ball by the ear, probably very close. Yes. So, now go in there and exaggerate the wobbly legs, imagine that you fell over in front of the girls.

Yes. See what you get. The only thing that's left is a little bit of that ball coming by my ear. The crack of the bat I made really loud, this one happened to go right by my ear. I probably got a 2, there's something left on it.

Well, we didn't deal with the sound of it, in the story. I could hear the seams whistling by my ear. So, is the sound maybe an aspect that we didn't get to? Apparently, yes. Alright, so is there a way to describe the sound?

It's a whiz, that's all I can say. So we're going to use it on the reminder points. Even though that ball went, whiz, right by my ear, I deeply and completely accept myself. Whiz, right by my ear.

Imagine the whiz right by your ear, or maybe you need to exaggerate it again. Now it won't even go whiz. Well OK, you're deaf now, deaf to the baseball in your ear. Something like that. Good.
