If you're somebody that switches between vertical and horizontal resolutions quite a lot, whether or not it's photo or video, then you're going to really like the accessory I'm featuring today. Quick disclaimer: Small Rig did send me this product to review, but they've had no involvement in this video at all. So, this is an L bracket, and I'm pretty sure that most people know what this is and what it's for, but if you don't, this metal L-shaped accessory screws onto your camera and lets you mount it vertically or horizontally to a tripod, which is great for photographers who want to adjust composition and switch between portrait and landscape orientations. And as so many people are now watching videos in 9x16 ratio, then this accessory is also useful for videographers as well. But L brackets do come with some issues. Sometimes this L-shaped bracket can block some very important ports on the camera, such as the HDMI port, microphone ports, etc. They can also cover battery compartments, which means you can't actually change the battery if you have

one of these mounted to the camera, and if you have a flip-out screen, sometimes the L bracket can block your screen from rotating. So yeah, a lot of issues. Well, forget about those problems because Small Rig has released a brand new L bracket which is going to make you just want to throw your other L brackets in the bin. So, this is the new Small Rig foldable L bracket. It has an ARCA Swiss base plate in both vertical and horizontal modes, and it fits the A74, the A7 S3, and the A7 R5. Switching between horizontal and vertical modes on this L bracket couldn't be any easier. If you're in horizontal mode, just pressing the button on the right, this will release the base plate, and then you can put it into the vertical position. This locks in so you can't accidentally change or adjust the L bracket, and then to release it from vertical mode, you press the button on the left. You can then pull down the base plate and put it back into horizontal mode, and luckily this L

bracket doesn't block any ports on the camera at all, but I know that some of you are thinking, Well, hold on, Jack. In vertical mode, it's clearly blocking some of your ports on your a74. Well, you'd be right, but this L bracket has a special feature. It's actually extendable. So, if you loosen the screw at the bottom of the L bracket, you can actually pull the L bracket away from your camera so you can now access those ports. And once you re-tighten the screw, this is super sturdy in vertical mode, and I think it has a payload of up to five kilos, which is more than enough for most setups. Now, with the L bracket extended, you get plenty of extra space to add your microphone cable or whatever it is you want to add to your a74. If you're wondering if this L bracket prevents you from removing your battery, again, this isn't an issue. Small rig of thought about it. There's this little hinge that you can flip out, and then you can access

your battery no problem. So, with this L bracket on your camera, you can access your battery, you can access all of your ports. There's no reason really to ever take this off your camera. Small rig has even added three-quarter inch thread mounts to the bottom of this L bracket, so when you're in vertical mode, you can attach different things to your camera. And as with pretty much all small rig accessories, this feels really well made. It weighs 150 grams. It's a mix of aluminum alloy and steel, and in a way, it almost feels more sturdy than my Sony a74. Now, some of you may be wondering why I even use an L bracket. If you have a tripod with a ball head, you can just turn the camera into vertical mode really easily. But the issue with that is, depending on your setup, that can make the tripod fall to one side. It can become unbalanced. And not just that, but if you have your tripod level already and you've spent some time making sure it's level in horizontal mode, then all

you need to do is flip your camera around. There's no need to, you know, unscrew the ball head, adjust it, and then realize that that's not level either, and then you have to re-level that. So, the L bracket will save you a lot of time. So, after testing and using this product for about a week or two, I could honestly say that it's going to be invaluable for most photographers and videographers. It's a really handy product, and to be honest, I don't know if I'll ever take it off my Sony A74. It's going to make my life so much easier just mounting the camera in different ways. I do a lot of content in vertical mode and also horizontal as well, like YouTube right now. So, being able to just switch between the two orientations without having to do much fiddling with a tripod is going to be amazing. So, that's it for this video.
