extended range and fast charging are often the most valued features of an EV, and the common belief is that longer range requires larger batteries for higher capacity, thus slowing down the charging time. But does this have to be a trade-off? Well, at CATL, we're going to have them both. Wondering how? Dive in and find out. Basically, for EVs, the range and charging speed depend largely on the performance of the battery cells, which is then determined by the materials inside, such as the cathode and anode electrodes, separators, and electrolytes. With different designs of these elements, batteries mostly come in two types: C-rate batteries and high-energy batteries. The C-rate batteries feature electrodes with low density in both the cathode and anode, resulting in thinner electrodes that shorten the travel distance for lithium ions. Consequently, C-rate batteries show improved charge and discharge capabilities to make faster charging possible. In contrast, high-energy batteries have higher electrode density, which efficiently amplifies battery energy density to offer an extended range. To sum up, C-rate

batteries charge quickly, but offer shorter range. For high-energy batteries, it is the other way around.
