euthanasia it's one of those big big subjects that most of us have a hard time talking about in fact it's probably not talked about near enough especially in relation to your veterinarian your dog your cat and you know what does

it mean to end your pet's life and is it the right thing to do and do vets you know do they struggle with that you're watching this YouTube channel I suspect you're a pretty dedicated pet parent perhaps you have a small dog like Tula

like little Tula you know who I would do anything for I get you're super thoughtful any decision involving your pet is going to be made with a huge degree of thought it's not something that you're not treating them like a lifestyle they've

got to fit into your lifestyle the topic of euthanasia comes up you're gonna put a whole lot of thought into it you know but not every client is like that one 2018 study found that 80 of vets they're saying that not every euthanasia

is ethical in terms of there are euthanasias that they've had to perform that or they've been asked to perform that in their opinion probably shouldn't be happening there are these moral dilemmas that come up I mean I can think back in veterinary

practice, you know, a client is moving somewhere and it just so happens that you know their cat has been all of a sudden peeing in the house and they've tried everything, there's nothing else they can do. Can you euthanize them, or you know their dog is in, like, say

they've got a little dog, like, Tula, say there's been some type of accident injury, there's been, you know, a broken femur, clearly a bone that could be fixed with surgery, but they just, they don't have the money right, so they're in a position where

like, you know, you as a vet, you could fix it, but you've got a client that just doesn't have the funds to do that, so like what are your options as a veterinarian? You can clearly, you know, not choose to euthanize an animal

and it's really, it's up to the individual professional whether they're making that decision or not. The clients can just come in and say, you know, 'I'm moving up north, yeah, can you euthanize Fluffy?' Like obviously you as a professional can make that decision and say like, 'No,

this won't happen.' And many veterinarians do, but you're still, you know, having to make those decisions in those choices, and you're stuck in that, you know, big, you know, being the one to decide does this animal live or not, but when is the right time to euthanize

an animal? I mean, it's not always that clear-cut, and you know, here are veterinarians, you know, making these daily life decisions and it's clearly, it kind of weighs on so many people when you're sort of stuck in this conundrum of like

okay maybe if I just try this more diagnostic test or maybe we try this treatment then this dog you know well Tula might be okay or I gave you know maybe I tried this one more thing for this chronic bombing maybe Murray might be okay like you're

kind of stuck in that it's not 100% clear so it really is this you know this huge moral stress that you know many veterans face on a daily basis so there then you end up with you know compassion fatigue I mean a big part of it is

you know taking all these all of this on you know you as a professional taking all that stuff on and like here it is you're holding you know this dog's life and your balance and that dog means so much to that whole family so you can see it can be a pretty

challenging uh profession to work in if you have a veterinarian that refuses to euthanize an animal he or she probably has a pretty darn good reason for that and you know he's had to think you know strong and hard around

the decision to do that I mean I recall being in practice and you've had a client bringing in animals that are you know less than well cared for and obviously older animal like clearly losing weight they're saying he or she can please euthanize my animal

sometimes you're kind of left with what happened if I don't euthanize that dog or I don't euthanize that cat does that then mean that you know he's gonna take it out back and his life won't end

peacefully via euthanasia, like you're you're trying to weigh all those decisions, so it's not just, you know, the simple decision or not of, you know, injecting euthanol. It's a hard decision to make and, you know, I practiced for nearly 20

years, I didn't get any easier and, you know, I that's one thing I definitely value that from the profession, to be able to be able to help animals that were in distress, like they people have that option, but it doesn't mean it's easy. Thanks for
