hello, my friends. In today's video, we will be comparing Panasonic Lumix S9 and Fujifilm x16. Despite that there are some fundamental differences, I think that this is one of the most relevant comparisons featuring these two cameras. Small cameras are making a big comeback this year, and I think that both of these are among the best that you can get nowadays. In this video, we will take a look at the feature set of both cameras, the output, and the differences between them to find out whether you should consider getting one of them or maybe both. One of the main similarities between the S9 and x16 is the size and the basic shape. Both are very flat cameras that are meant to be very compact. The S9 is actually slightly smaller than the x16, which is wider by about 2 and 1/2 mm. Fujifilm is heavier by 35 G, but that includes the fixed lens. There are very significant differences when it comes to the configuration of both cameras. The S9 is a full-frame

interchangeable lens camera with a big battery, no mechanical shutter, and no electronic viewfinder. The X16 is an APS-C camera with a fixed lens, small battery, leaf shutter, and hybrid electronic SL optical viewfinder. I will be explaining all of those differences throughout this video. The overall size of the S9 setup will be largely determined by the lens that you use. The design of the X100 6 is very retro. The S9 is more contemporary. I think that the X16 is unbeatable in terms of design. I think that it is probably the best-looking camera on the market. Having said that, I also like the minimalism of the S9 and the color options, and I think that it is also one of the best-looking cameras on the market. The X16 feels a little bit more solid, mostly because of the tilting screen. The S9 is also a well-built camera. I don't have any specific complaints in that regard. The X16 can be fully weather-sealed as long as you use a filter over

the lens weather sealing specifications of the S9 are not available so it is probably not fully weather sealed, but it should survive a certain amount of bad weather. One of the biggest differences is that the S9 is an interchangeable lens camera, whereas the x16 has a 35mm full-frame equivalent lens. Now, both approaches have advantages and disadvantages. The obvious advantage of the interchangeable lens design is the versatility; you can use any L-mount lens on the S9 currently, with focal ranges from 14mm to 600mm. With the x16, you can only have one focal length, but the advantage is that the lens can be specifically designed to match the rest of the camera. That means that you have a fairly bright F2 lens with autofocus and 35mm focal length, which is probably the best choice for a camera such as this one. Importantly, the size of the lens is basically negligible. You can also have a lens with negligible size on the S9, but it is an F8 manual focus lens. Some El Mount

lenses such as the I series from Sigma, or upcoming 18 to 40 mm kit lens, will be a great match for the S9. Some something like the f1.8 Panasonic primes are still completely fine, in my opinion. Another big difference is the sensor. The S9 uses a full-frame backside illuminated 24 megapixel sensor. The x16 uses a smaller apsc sensor, but with higher 40 megapixel resolution, and it is also backside illuminated. In terms of the details, it is a little bit tricky. Fujifilm has 40% more resolution, but as I explained in my X100 6 lens review, you are not getting full 40 megapixel perception resolution with this lens. The S9 has lower resolution, but it also has a massive pixel density advantage, which means that you can get close to 24 megapixel perception resolution with most lenses, and that also includes that 26 mm f8. The amount of detail is actually quite similar, but the contrast on Panasonic is much better, and the result

of that is that you can indeed get a better image quality with the S9. Having said that, it is not a completely fair comparison because all L Mount lenses are much bigger than the tiny lens on the x16. With exception of that 26 mm f8, which is a very specific case. The difference in the iso performance is about one stop, as usual. That means very clean ISO 1600 on both. ISO 3200 on Panasonic is perfectly usable. There is some noise on Fujifilm, but it is still fine. ISO 6400 on Panasonic is usable for majority of publishing platforms. The noise on Fujifilm is a lot more noticeable. ISO 12,800 on Panasonic is an emergency option. On Fujifilm, it is only suitable for documentary purposes. There is a lot of noise at 25,600 on Panasonic, but it can still get the colors right. Fujifilm only goes up to 12,800 natively. As expected, Panasonic is generally better for the low light use, but Fujifilm is not bad at all.

apsc camera, especially with that F2 lens. Fujifilm got a lot closer to full-frame dynamic range by lowering the base ISO on X-T4 from 160 to 125. As long as you can keep the ISO low, the dynamic range won't be an issue. With the X-T4, it will give you a lot of flexibility for editing. The dynamic range on the S9 is basically the same as with all full-frame backside illuminated sensors and therefore great overall. Panasonic wins in terms of the output despite the lower resolution, but there is a lot of context behind that statement, and the X-T4 definitely shoots very nice pictures. Panasonic also offers handheld high-resolution 96-megapixel mode. It works great and processes the pictures in-camera, so it is basically the best implementation on the market. The colors are actually quite different. Panasonic uses pretty high contrast and saturation in the default standard color style. Fujifilm is more toned down. Both cameras offer a ton of options that allow you to change that, so it doesn't really mean much. Fujifilm

offers well-known film simulations. Panasonic is introducing an extended version of real-time lot feature. Fujifilm currently offers 20 film simulations, and I personally like all of them. An advantage of Fujifilm is that it offers more efficient HEIF format in addition to JPEG. Panasonic's real-time lot feature actually offers greater customization, but the implementation is a little bit less simple. You can download the Lots through the new Lumix Lab app, which is great by the way, or you can make your own Lots. Fujifilm also allows you to create your own simulations, but Panasonic's AB-based approach is probably more sophisticated. If you shoot RAW, you can always export standard-style JPEG. In the camera menu, you can also apply any film simulation or lot afterwards, which is what I actually prefer. The S9 doesn't have a mechanical shutter. Considering the intended use of the S9, I think that it is a reasonable space-saving measure. Some people are worried about the bending. The only situation where you can see bending is

when using shutter speeds about one 100 of a second with artificial light, I don't think that an average S9 user will need to do that very often, if ever. If you do, be aware that it might be an issue. Both cameras use a hybrid autofocus system with both face detection and contrast detection points. In the still mode, both cameras will work completely fine in usual easier situations. In more difficult situations, both will still be accurate and there won't be any hunting, even in the low light or with backlit subjects. Panasonic may be faster in certain situations due to the focusing motor in the x16s lens. The tracking is actually a positive surprise with the x16. I was able to get a perfect hit rate in my walking towards the camera test. It seems that the autofocus motor is only slower when focusing in from close distance to Infinity. Panasonic's tracking after the firmware update is really good. I am getting a perfect hit rate constantly even at 50 mm f1.8. This is a great tracking performance, and there is absolutely

nothing that I can complain about here in video both will again work really well in easier usual situations. Panasonic will be significantly better and more consistent in difficult situations. Fujifilm will still be pretty accurate and relatively fast, but the smoothness is not great. In more difficult situations, the S9 doesn't really care. It works perfectly in all of my testing scenes, including the SD card scene, which is still Fujifilm's weakness. Fujifilm has finally added touch tracking for video, which works quite well depending on the situation. The selection of focus areas and subjects is still very poor. Panasonic, on the other hand, offers pretty much any area or subject detection option that you can imagine. The autofocus model is unfortunately not completely quiet on Fujifilm, and it will be picked up by in-camera microphone or shotgun microphone. The autofocus model in all Panasonic glanes is completely silent. Overall, Panasonic wins in terms of the autofocus, but the X 106 still surpassed my expectations considering that it uses such a small

lens. Panasonic can shoot up to 30 frames per second with electronic shutter. Fujifilm up to 20 frames per second, both with autofocus continues. Fujifilm can also shoot 11 frames per second with mechanical shutter. The S9 can also shoot 8 frames per second with autofocus continues. The main weakness of both cameras for fast action is the buffer size. If 61006 can take 36 compressed row, the S955 row in 8 or 9 frames per second mode using jpex for fast action is probably a good idea with both. The S9 also has a proper U2 card slot, whereas the x16 only has a UHS one slot. That means that the buffer clearing is a lot faster with the S9. Both cameras have inad image stabilization, which is quite an achievement. In both cases, the S9 IB is rated for five stops. The x16 is Ibis for six stops. Despite that, I was getting better results with the S9 in the real-world use. I was able to get sharp.

pictures at one quarter of a second with Fuji film. With Panasonic, I was able to get to one half of a second at 35 mm, but that may have been possible thanks to the extra weight of the lens that I was using. Nevertheless, even one-fourth of a second on Fujifilm is a good result. In video, both are similarly effective for static shots and panning. Both are really good at keeping the image stable, especially at that size. Panasonic's IB is famous for walking performance, and that is also the case with the S9. The E stabilization has also been greatly improved, and it is now one of the best on the market. Walking while shooting video at 35 mm focal length with the x16 is not a reasonable thing to do, so I won't even get into that. Overall, Panasonic also wins in terms of the stabilization. Both are also very capable video cameras. Panasonic captures a bit more detail. It shoots fully downsampled 4K video up to 30p or 6K 30p with no

crop the X16 can either shoot no-crop video up to 4K 30p with some pixel binning, or downscaled video with 1.33 times crop. 6.2K also comes with the same 1.33 times crop. Panasonic offers open-gate 6K video, which is a big advantage if you shoot for both vertical and horizontal platforms. For film, it has a smaller 1.14 times crop in 4K 60p, but Panasonic still uses a larger sensor area in 1.5 times cropped 4K 60. Importantly, both can shoot 10-bit video. Fujifilm can do so in 10-bit 422 in all modes. Panasonic can shoot 4K in 10-bit 422 and 6K in 420. The X100 6 has one significant advantage over the S9 for video, and that is unlimited recording. Panasonic is limited to 15 minutes in 4K. Most people probably don't shoot longer clips than that. If you do, you will have to get something else. The approach to handling is very

different for film is an experience-oriented camera with dedicated exposure dials. Panasonic uses a conventional PSAM dial. Fujifilm is generally a more engaging camera for advanced users, possibly the most engaging. Panasonic is probably easier to use; it still has two command dials and a sufficient amount of buttons. Another difference is the X16 has a joystick, which I appreciate a lot. Panasonic has a D-pad with five extra buttons. I would really like a joystick on the S9, but it largely compensates for not having one by having really good touch functionality. The approach is also very different when it comes to the user interface. The main menu on Fujifilm is logically organized and easy to navigate, but it doesn't work with a touchscreen at all. On the other hand, Panasonic's main menu is optimized for touch input, which means that it has much larger menu items. That also means that you need to scroll more. The quick menu on both cameras is very different. Fujifilm offers full-screen background preview with big items. The Q menu actually works

really great with the touchscreen and the dials on the X16 Panasonic gives you a small preview with icons on the right side. I got used to the smaller preview and now I also like it a lot. It is very convenient to use with the main dial. Both cameras have a 3-inch display with 1.84 million dots. It is most likely the same panel. It is very detailed, bright enough, and very accurate. It is completely fine even in direct sunlight, but you need to increase the brightness. I prefer the tilting mechanism on the X16, mostly because it keeps the footprint of the camera small even when extended. One reason why I don't mind the rotating screen, specifically on the S9, is that a lot of people will use it in portrait mode, and the rotating screen offers more flexibility for that. The X16 has a hybrid electronic and optical viewfinder. The electronic viewfinder is actually pretty solid. It is a 3.60 million dot panel with 66 times magnification. The optical viewfinder

range finder has 52 times magnification, but I actually use it more than the evf. Mostly because of the old school experience. I am happy with both options on the x16. Personally, I am also fine with the space saving on the S9. Not everybody agrees with me, but I think that it is a good decision considering that the evf would probably be something like five times magnification 2.36 million dot unit from the a7c. As I've said before, that specific kind of evf is, in my opinion, not worth the space and the extra cost. Of course, not everybody will agree with me on that. On the other hand, Panasonic has included a big 2,200 mamp bk22 battery. I won't include sear rating because one is rated for display use and the other for evf use. In reality, Panasonic's battery life is significantly better. It is a bit difficult to quantify because Panasonic doesn't show the battery percentage. In my side by side use, Panasonic has consumed one of five bars roughly at the

moment when I had 68% l on Fujifilm. Panasonic will get through a day of my usual samples gathering with just a half battery. Fujifilm can do that with about three quarters. To sum up, I can say that both are winners in their own regard. They are very different cameras intended for different types of use so I can't necessarily say that you can't go wrong with either. Fujifilm x16 is primarily about the shooting experience but it can also deliver very solid output. The Lumix S9 is a camera made specifically to offer fullframe output in the smallest possible convenient package. Neither of them is a Workhorse camera for Professionals in the traditional sense. Probably the biggest difference is interchangeable and fixed lens design one gives you versatility the other one gives you a very Compact and solid lens matched with the body. Panasonic can ultimately provide better output for both stills and video thanks to that fullframe sensor but as I've explained there is a lot of context behind that statement. Panasonic has better autofocus.

especially in video, but Fujifilm performs really well considering the type of lens that it uses. The same applies to the stabilization. Panasonic also has better video specifications with open gate and fully down-sampled, no crop 4K, with the exception of the recording limits, which is something that the S9 users will have to live with. If you are a photography enthusiast, the X16 might be the most enjoyable camera currently on sale. Vintage feel combined with a small size, controls, and things such as the optical viewfinder make it a lot of fun to use. That certainly doesn't mean that the S9 is not fun to use; the approach is very different, though. It ultimately does what it was meant to do really well, and that is to provide that full-frame output in the smallest possible form factor, which is still enjoyable to use. Overall, both cameras are really good at what they were designed to do, and I hope that this comparison will help you decide which way to go. So, that's it for this video. Thank you for watching.
