This is called the dairy, and the dairy was designed by Calvert Vaux in 1865. And like the name suggests, stays to sell cheese and milk here and whatnot. But they knew the city would go around the park, and in order to facilitate crosstown traffic, they created traverses like this one right here. So right now, we're on top of 65th street, and this is the first example of one of the first examples in the world of grade separation. So pedestrians on top, carriages on the bottom, to maintain a peaceful park. These paths out here are treacherous, man. They almost damaged my gear. Mom's, let's not talk about it. Mom's life, I'm kind of over it now. I'm kind of over it now. To see Arisa Senegal Village is in the area of 82nd street and the west side of the park. So think the area near

the rose center of planetary science, natural history museum, kind of area 86th street and the west side, or 82nd street and the west side of the park. That's where sailing village was, Seneca village, one of the largest free African-American villages in the country, one of the first, and actually, it's also one of the first places where you really get an integrated society. First three African Americans begin moving up there when the lots become ready for sale, and then eventually some German and Irish families move uptown. So, it's kind of amazing when you look at the town records. They were doing some research about the town and how they lived. They noticed that a lot of the town, they went to each other's weddings, they went to each other's birthday parties and christenings. So, it was very much an integrated community, which is quite, quite amazing for 1825. This ice makes it so hard to walk around. Good to see a knot today. Welcome. How many miles will I walk so

in all of central park. This is the mall. A lot of the trees around here were original to the park. They were planted here between 1855 and 1856. This is one of the largest groves of great American elm trees outside of Washington, D.C. In this grove alone, there's almost 400 great American elm trees. But throughout all of central park, you can find close to 3,000 great American elm trees. As you see, even in the wintertime, they make this beautiful canopy of limbs and branches. It's quite beautiful. Yeah, they didn't salt down enough of the pathways here. They should have salted down the pathways a little bit better here. So this, when the park first opens up, nearly 50% of all park users have a private carriage. Who has a private carriage in the 1860s? Well, the top 5% earners. So for the first 10 years, the park was

There was a sighting of an American bald eagle not that far from here at around 79th Street and Hudson River Park, so it's kind of amazing how the bird life is adapting to the city.
