In Japan, the abacus was introduced around the mid-16th century, and during the early Edo period, it began to spread nationwide. It was primarily used for teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic, and it became widely established across the country. After the Meiji Restoration, private tutoring schools emerged, and it is said that abacus education played a significant role in Japan's remarkable recovery after World War II. 

Currently, in the context of school education, abacus training is included in the curriculum for third graders. The focus is mainly on digitization, but it is common for students to refine their skills at abacus schools. With the proliferation of calculators, there are concerns that the abacus may become obsolete in the 20th century. However, the benefits of abacus learning include the ability to process information quickly and accurately.

The abacus of the 20th century can be considered a calculating device, but now it can be called a tool for skill development. I started using the abacus around the end of my kindergarten year. The first noticeable change was in my math skills at school, where I began to perform calculations a bit faster and developed concentration. I can do mental calculations of six-digit numbers multiplied by other numbers. When it comes to the abacus, it was confirmed that it is effective. Recently, there has been something called flash mental calculation, where numbers blink on a monitor, and the aim is to quickly identify those numbers. 

The effects of abacus learning are said to enhance the right brain. The selection is done mechanically, while the abacus requires human thought and finger movement. In the past 20 years, the number of participants has increased about 40 times. Through this process, various skills such as concentration, perseverance, and information processing abilities are developed. As for the impact beyond calculation skills, concentration remains a key benefit.

Watching my daughter, even though she says she has a small test tomorrow, I wonder how she can memorize so much in such a short time. I think it must be a gift of concentration. It is said that the brain is an organ that exists outside the body. Activating it truly makes a difference, and I feel that is indeed the case. The ultimate goal of using an abacus is to be able to perform calculations in one's head without relying on the physical abacus, achieving mental arithmetic. When I am doing mental calculations, my mind becomes completely blank, and it feels like only my spirit is focused on one single calculation. In mental arithmetic, I can change the figures and perform calculations in ways that are impossible with written methods, achieving ultra-fast mental calculations. This is referred to as abacus-style mental arithmetic. 

When I start automating, I feel a sense of sadness towards other calculation methods.
