there comes a point in every Path of Exile player's life when they hit some kind of wall, some kind of frustrating point. Maybe they're dying a lot, they're not dealing enough damage. This could happen during the campaign if you're a new player, or maybe if you're more experienced, tier 17s Ubers. And this is the point where you have two paths. There is one path, and this is the wrong one, and that is to just give up, roll into another build, or even just play another game. If you do this, you are never going to get better at the game. However, when you hit this wall, there is an opportunity to get better at the game. And this is what all people who are good at Path of Exile do, and all people who want to get better at Path of Exile do. And that is to, when you hit that wall, instead of saying, This sucks, this build sucks, I hate this, I'm going to play something else, you say, What is the problem and how do I fix it? Now, this is easier said than done if

you're a new player. You won't even be aware of all the tools at your disposal to solve these problems. Also, PEX has a bit of a problem when it comes to actually taking damage. You don't know what killed you, you don't know what damage type it was. So there are problems there, but hopefully in today's video, I will help at least boil it down into a very fundamental level that will help you at least understand the core of it and how you can then solve those problems. So hopefully you have now decided you want to get better at Path of Exile instead of giving up. I get it, this seems like work, you don't have to think when you play games, but actually learning this stuff is really fun once you start getting your head around it and understanding it. It is incredibly satisfying. So let's talk about new players and build guides. So if you're following a build guide, what I recommend is to follow the build guide, look at the skills that are being used, read the skills. I know it

seems stupid, but a lot of people do not even read skills. I've been guilty of this in the past. Read the skill, try to understand what it does, and then, once you've done that, a lot of build guides will have note sections. Read through those, even if it takes you half an hour. Go through it, look at the items that are being used on the build. So first step, just basic, basic reading. Try to understand what you're seeing. But then we can talk about damage. And again, if you're new, look at the Path of Building that has been provided in the guide you are following. And then you can head over to this cool section over here, and you can look at the skill and scaling. This is where you learn how to play Path of Exile. This page right over here. So to break down damage in a very, very layman's term type way, we can explain it like this. So we have flat damage. Let's just say we do 100 lightning damage with our lightning attack. Then we can increase the amount

we do that damage by a %, so we can say we do 100 lightning damage, and we increase it by 100%. That you can do with items and with your tree. So let's say 100 damage 100%. We are now doing 200 damage. And then there are also more multipliers. So we have increases, and we have more. So more will take those first two numbers and multiply it by percentage. So if we have 100 damage being increased by 100%, we have 200. And then we have a 30% more multiplier that will go 200 * 1.3, which will give us 260 damage. There is more to this, of course, but on a fundamental level what I am seeing a lot in PS of people who have messed things up is they will be missing one of these points. They won't have the flat damage, which is then scaled by the increased damage. So if you have let's say 300% increased damage but you're only doing 10 damage well now it's just

30 damage, which is then being multiplied by 1.3. You're doing 39 damage. So try and look at your skills, see where these are coming from, and you can just hover over it right here so we can see on my build. We're getting this 398 flat damage from added lightning damage and from my ring. And then that is being increased by 542 from these various things. We've got my tinctures, we have my taming, we have my stigi, and Vis, and my weapon Elemental damage, and Trinity. Then we have my more multiplier, and this is coming from Trinity. Now on my build, we also have things like this Avatar of the wild at the bottom. 80% more Elemental damage while Unbound. Now if we go back over to config, turn on my Unbound, and you're going to see my damage shoot up. It goes up a lot, and that's because this more multiplier is being increased. So flat increased more. And then we also have things like effective DPS mod where we're getting things like penetration. This is another multiplier.

so it does start getting complicated, but knowing that these things exist and how they interact with one another can help you. At least see where your damage is coming from. If you don't have flat, there's nothing to really multiply into the bigger number. Your homework is to go look at your path of building, the one from the guide, and actually see where is the damage coming from. How is this person getting so much damage? Do I have all these things in my build as well? Do I have my tinctures up? Where is it coming from? And then you can see the end result. If you're new, you don't even know what to ask. Well, these are the questions you need to start asking and looking at. This obviously gets much more complicated. There's stuff like crits, crit m attack rate, accuracy, other effects like culling rage, all of that. But at least trying to understand this first step is very important. Now, in terms of defenses, one thing you could do if you're new is to play a hardcore build.

in a softcore League just so that if you do die, you're not going to be permanently dead. But if you do, make sure to try again, learn the guide, and try to understand what they are doing to actually get tanky and not die. And we can see again all of this on this side over here. We have all of our evasion, armor, damage avoidance, and then down here we can see damage taken, hits before death, effective Health pool, and everything over here. And once again, you can hover over it and see all right, my maximum hit taken is 15,000 and that's coming from these different things: armor resistances, and various other sources. Now, I've done a video briefly on this in the past, and I've broken it down into I call it IRHAM. I spoke to Octavian about this a long time ago, but IRHAM is immunity. So, things that make you immune to corrupted blood, immune to shock, immune to freeze, ignite, all these various things that you can get. This is where

knowledge comes in, and this is actually the probably should be the top of the thing. Knowledge, so just knowing where to get all of these things, and this comes from time and experience, and also mechanics, actually physically playing the game, how you move around, and knowing from knowledge how different boss Mechanics Work and how to avoid those attacks. So these are actually probably the most important, but those come from time, and you can learn those from Guides, watching guides on boss fights and things, but these are more things that we can look at right now. So immunity, immunity to stun, these sorts of things now are recovery probably one of the most overlooked layers of Defense in most builds, and this is going to be things like life regeneration, and this is what I would consider a passive recovery. So I'm not doing anything, and my life is still going up. We have that you could also even say life flask. So a life flask recovers your life, but then we also have forms of active recovery, which are things like life leech when I hit an

enemy I get life back. This is active. You could also put something like life recoup as a semi-active form of recovery. So when I get hit, I recover life over X number of seconds. So we have a recovery layer. This is how you keep your life up. I'm not going to go into every single form of recovery, but I'm just trying to demonstrate there are various things that you can then look at in the build you are playing to see. Do I have these various things? Do I have immunity to let's say Elemental ailments? This is probably one of the big ones that a lot of builds will try and make sure that you get as soon as possible because these are often quite deadly. And Recovery, see do you have life regen? Do you have leech or recoup? Or is your life flask actually rolled properly? Next, we're going to go for H is just hit points. How much life do you actually have on your gear? Because once all that damage comes through, do you actually have the hit pull to soak it up? Next A

is for avoidance. This is, I would say, things like evasion, avoiding getting hit, actually not even getting hit, and chance to avoid Elemental ailments. Usually, you want to have this at 100%, which would make you immune, but we have various forms of avoidance. So, chance to not take damage or things like this, chance to evade projectile attacks, other forms of avoidance, let me think, avoid bleeding, avoid being impaled, avoid poison, all of these various forms of avoidance. Again, there are so many, ignore stuns while casting, there's many layers of this, but trying to see how do I avoid taking damage, and then when I do take damage, how do I mitigate it, as in, how do I take less damage. And now, this one is a little bit easier for most of us to identify, so mostly we want to have physical mitigation. This is from just actual physical hits, so physical, and then I guess there are some physical spells and things, and we can reduce this with things like armor and Fizz taken as Elemental, so when you take a physical

hit it is instead converted into Elemental damage, which is then mitigated by your resistances. So, resistances 75% on your cold, fire, and lightning is mandatory. This is the easiest but also most important ation layer. This is also how getting 90% resistance makes you very tanky. So, if you take a 100 damage hit, if you have 75 res, you will take 25. If you have 90, you'll only take 10, and this can be further reduced with things like endurance charges. And again, I know new player, you probably looking at this like, I don't know all these things, how am I meant to know this? Yes, we'll get into it a bit more, but there are more like things like spell suppression. This is a form of spell damage mitigation. When you out at 100% spell suppression, if you get hit and you take, let's say, 100 damage, instead you would only take 50. So, you're mitigating that damage. Look at the build you're playing.

see if it has elements of this or at least try to identify these elements and then knowledge mechanics. Also things like mobility and movement speed. These are things that will come with time. Mobility, you know, just movement speed and also your movement skill. But see, do I have immunity to things? Try and see what's killing you. If you keep getting killed by ignite, see where can I get ignite immunity. Or if I keep getting stunned, how do I get stun immunity? Can open up pee Wiki and check it out. And then recovery. Do I have life regen or leech or something? Again, probably the most overlooked defensive layer, hit points. Do I have enough life on my gear? And then do I have some kind of avoidance layer and mitigation layer. We can check out my build again. This is a softcore build, so we have some forms of Fizz mitigation. Could turn on my immortal coal and make it look even better. Wow, look at that. And we can check it out. Let's just turn everything on for the sake of the video.

we can see we have armor, and we have our flat armor, which is then being increased from the tree, and then there is a more multiplier from determination. So similar to our skill damage, where we have the flat, let's say 2,800 armor being increased by this amount, and then multiplied all by this more multiplier. This Fizz damage reduction is not accurate, do take this with a grain of salt, especially in Path of Exile, but you can see how this Fizz mitigation number at least functions. Same for evasion, so we see where this is coming from. We're getting blind, we have evade chance, damage avoidance, so avoid all damage. We have 16% from our elusive block, we getting some avoidance from block. Dodge, we have no Dodge, spell suppression, this should be, this is more mitigation, but we're getting our spell suppression here, so this is mitigation, avoidance, mitigation over here. Flasks, very important, make sure you roll your flask. So much defense, then we have other things like other defensive movement speed, again your mobility, your ability to move.

out of the way is actually a very important defensive layer. But you can see movement speed, stun avoidance chance to avoid being stunned. Getting stun locked is bad. You can get something like soul of the BR King to prevent getting stun locked. But here are all of these defensive layers and I really I know it might seem boring. But it is once you get into it, this is fascinating. It is so interesting. And then once you start adjusting your build and making changes and making it better and seeing it work in game based on the changes you've made and understanding the changes you made, this is PA of Exile. This is the real game. And this is why people will joke about sitting in part the building because it is just so fascinating to understand these numbers and try and make your build good with various clever tricks and things like that. So again, look down here. We got our effective hit pool and you can see where a lot of this is coming from. I think I have rambled enough. Hopefully this is helpful to new

players, again, I recommend joining discords, speak to other players, and then actually go into the path of buildings that you are playing. Of the builds you're playing, look at the defenses, look at the damage, try to understand, and make the decision instead of just throwing in the towel and giving up. Try to get better. And this might be a bit of a philosophical life lesson, I suppose, but when you encounter problems, I know it sucks, but if you can get that mindset shift into rather, This sucks, but it's an opportunity to learn, figure out the problem, and grow from it and get better, that's how you stop sucking at everything. So, apply that to Path of Exile. Instead of throwing in the towel, try to get better. Hopefully, this helps. Let me know what you think.
