Google released a new version of Gemini, and apparently, it's the best out there. So we're going to test it today. It is Gemini 1.5 Pro. We get to test text, images, video, long context. We're going to do everything. Let's go. Okay, so a little bit about it before we start testing. Natively multimodal, updated long context window of up to 2 million tokens. Unreal. So you can basically put like an hour and a half of video into it to interpret. It achieves near-perfect call on long context retrieval tasks across modalities, unlocking the ability to accurately process large-scale documents, thousands of lines of code, hours of audio, video, and more. And here are the benchmarks. So Gemini 1.5 Pro May 2024 MML U nearly 86% code, 82% math, 67%. So really good scores across the board. So we're going to be using AI Studio by Google. There are actually two versions of Gemini 1.5 Pro. There's the Standard Version, and then there's the experimental 081.

version. I think I'm going to use the experimental version today. I hope that's the right one. It is in preview. If we find that we're not getting great responses from it, then I'll switch over to 1.5 Pro standard. So, let's get into the testing. First question: write a Python script to output numbers 1 to 100. And good, and it's pretty fast too. This is good. So, not only gave us two examples, but it also gave us an explanation of how it works. So, this is correct, and this is correct. That's a pass. Next, write the game snake in Python. And if it gets this easily, I'm going to iterate on the game a few times. Yeah, and I'm surprised. It's actually really fast. This is definitely a great speed. I had to run it a number of times, which really sucks, but we finally got it to output the whole thing. So, I'm going to copy the code. It does use the curses library, which I don't prefer over pygame, but it is what it is. Let's give it a try. Okay, I pasted the code into VSS code. Let's give it a try, and we got an error. So, unfortunately, that did not work. Let me try a couple other things. Okay, so I can't get it to work again. I keep getting this output error, and that's with Gemini 1.5 Pro Experimental. So, I'm just going to say this is a fail. This is super disappointing. I know it can do better, but if it keeps failing to give me the output, then that's a definite failure. Okay, next, let's see if it's censored. I kind of already know it is, but let's see.

Same question, let's see if it gives me something different. All right, so this is actually a better answer. Drying time depends on factors like sunlight, humidity, air circulation, not the number of shirts. Assuming drying conditions remain the same, five shirts or 20 shirts doesn't change how much sunlight is available. Then 4 hours for 20 shirts to dry, that is a much better answer, and that is a pass. So I'm going to stick with Gemini 1.5 Pro. Next question, how many words are in your response to this prompt? My response has seven words, so obviously that's not correct. Let's give it a try with the experimental version. Same question, my response has five words, so that is correct. So you know, I think it's probably just mostly luck that it got it right, and I think it's about time.

So this is the first time where the model has actually considered the dead killer still a killer or really considered the dead killer at all, but it completely ignored the new person who entered the room and did the killing, who should have become a killer. So I don't know what to

do on this one. I think this is a fail. Let's try the same question with Gemini 1.5 Pro standard. Okay, so in Gemini 1.5 Pro, this is actually a worse answer. The problem stat there are initially three killers in the room. One killer is killed. Then there are two killers remaining because only the two living killers while the dead killer's body is still present. We are interested in the number of killers implying those who can still commit a killing. So again completely ignored the person who walked in the room and completed a killing. Definite fail. All right, I had high hopes but I'm starting to lose hope. Let's give it the marble question. Let's start with Gemini 1.5 Pro standard. A marble is put in a glass. The glass is then turned upside down and put on the table. Then the glass is picked up and put in the microwave. Where is the marble now? So the marble's inside the glass. Flip the glass, the marble stays inside the glass. It doesn't magically teleport. All right, little sass.

with the glass upside down on the table, the marble is trapped inside the glass resting against the bottom. Okay, moving the glass into the microwave doesn't change the fact that the marble is still trapped inside, so that is not correct. Very, very bad. Let's give the same question to Gemini 1.5 Experimental now. Okay, it actually gave us the same exact answer, token for token, exactly the same. I'm just going to create a new system prompt just to check if it had anything to do with that Gemini 1.5 Experimental. Let's see. Yep, so again, the marble's in the glass, which is inside the microwave. That is a complete fail. Now, as a reminder, Mistal Large 2 and Llama 3.1 405b both got this right. Next, give me 10 sentences that end in the word Apple. Okay, so this is a failure. It got seven of the 10 correct, but here's one with floor, here's one with reward, here's one with Halloween. Now, it interestingly did bold every word Apple in each of the

sentences, but it didn't end in the word Apple. So again, that's a fail. Let's give the same one to Gemini 1.5 Pro Standard. All right, and even in this one, it failed again. So number nine and number 10 both do not end in Apple. Complete failure. Next, which number is bigger, 9.11 or 9.9? Something that should be very easy. Let's see. And this is Gemini 1.5 Pro Experimental. So 9.9 is bigger than 9.11. Yes, good, good, good. Think of it like money. $99.90 is more than $9.11. Great, that's a good way to think about it. And it explained exactly why. So that is a pass. Very nice. Now let's just make sure Gemini 1.5 Pro Standard also gets it right. Same question. Yep, 9.9 is bigger than 9.11. Here's why. Perfect.
