Three months earlier, Kelley got into an argument with his girlfriend, the mother of his child, Christina Lanza. Kelley left the home but later returned intoxicated. When Lanza turned him away, Kelley fired at the house, accidentally hitting his 11-year-old daughter, Shanti, who was upstairs having a sleepover. Shanti dies, and her father was arrested. Although considered an accident, Kelley was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter and was looking at the possibility of up to 20-plus years in prison.
