The Mu'tazilites managed to influence the rulers, and the rulers, in turn, believed in similar doctrines and enforced them with their armies. Even those who did not want to follow their opinions were imprisoned, as experienced by Imam Ahmad bin Hambal, may Allah have mercy on him.
