In addition, we will see the most relevant studies that have analyzed the effects of consuming collagen supplements in humans, and on the other hand, we will see which are the supplements and foods that could increase our collagen production naturally. Collagen is the most abundant protein in humans, found in all connective tissue, and performs many important functions in the body. Collagen is essential for skin structure and blood clotting. In addition, it is essential for the construction of skin, bones, ligaments, tendons, and

muscles. We could say that collagen works like the glue that holds everything together. But how is collagen produced in the body? Collagen production begins with procollagen, a molecule made of protein and vitamin C. These proteins are chains of amino acids such as lysine, proline, arginine, and hydroxyproline. As procollagen molecules are produced, these molecules begin to coil together into fibrils. These fibrils continue to be accumulated by the collagen molecules until they become more structured collagen fibers. These fibers begin to clump together and are what provide the structural element to parts of the body such as tendons, hair, skin, and nails. Our body produces collagen on its own, but as we age, this production slows down. And there are four different types of collagen, and then we will see what they are and what function each one has. First, we have type 1 collagen. Most of the collagen in the body is type 1, bones, skin, tendons, ligaments, connective tissue, fibrous cartilage, and

teeth are made of this type of collagen. Then we would have type 2 collagen; this type of collagen forms elastic cartilage in the joints. On the other hand, we would have type 3 collagen; this collagen acts as structural support for organs, muscles, and arteries. And finally, we would have type 4 collagen, and this type of collagen is found in the skin, in the basement membrane, and is important for stability. And by now, you are probably wondering what most collagen supplements are made of, and most collagen supplements are made from animal products, from bones, joints, tendons, and skin. But there are also vegan collagen supplements, and these supplements are made from genetically modified bacteria; specifically, they are made from Pichia Pastoris and yeast. And let's get to the million-dollar question: are collagen supplements a scam? The harsh reality is that collagen supplements are made from collagen proteins, and as the body digests collagen, the proteins are broken down into amino acids. These

amino acids are ingested but not rebuilt in the proper sequence to reform collagen. This means that if we eat collagen, we are not supplementing our body with additional collagen to improve health, for example, of hair, skin, and nails. And what about the studies that suggest that collagen consumption has positive effects on the human body? Indeed, these studies exist. There are studies that suggest that the consumption of collagen can have positive effects on parts of the body such as hair, skin, and nails. collagen production. In third place, we have foods rich in silica, such as whole grains and fruits such as bananas and pineapple. In fourth place, we have foods rich in vitamin C, such as red pepper, orange, grapefruit, kiwi, green pepper, and broccoli. And it is that vitamin C plays an important role in the production of procollagen, the precursor in the body of collagen, so obtaining enough vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen. And in fifth place, we have foods rich in vitamin E, such as sunflower seeds, almonds, hazelnuts, pine nuts, peanuts, avocado, and red pepper. And we cannot forget foods rich in zinc and copper, such as whole grains, among which we can find whole wheat pasta, oats, brown rice, and quinoa, nuts such as almonds and cashews, seeds such as sunflower and pumpkin seeds, legumes such as lentils, kidney beans, and edamame, and fruits and vegetables such as dried apricots, mushrooms, and spinach.

As you will see, I have repeated a large number of foods, and, luckily, many of these foods are rich in vitamins and minerals necessary for the production of collagen and to keep our body healthy and strong. And now you may be wondering what effects the consumption of collagen has on our hair. Hair is mainly made up of keratin, and our body uses different amino acids to create keratin. By consuming collagen and other proteins, our body breaks them down into amino acids that it then uses to create new proteins, and there are 11 non-essential amino acids that our body can produce and 9 essential amino acids that you need to acquire through diet. And as we have seen before, the Collagen is mainly made up of three non-essential amino acids: proline, glycine, and hydroxyproline. And proline is also the building block of keratin, so in theory, consuming proline-rich collagen should provide our body with the building blocks for creating hair. However, rigorous studies that

analyze the effects of collagen consumption on hair are lacking, so we do not know for sure if the consumption of this protein can promote hair growth or not. But what we do know is that collagen is not the only protein rich in these three amino acids, proline, glycine, and hydroxyproline. Foods like legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds are also rich in these three amino acids. Supplements such as soy and pea proteins and legumes such as lentils and beans are high in proline and glycine and also contain other beneficial amino acids. And it is that collagen supplements are much more expensive than supplements such as soy or pea protein that provide the same benefits and, in addition, provide a greater amount of protein. And one thing that should go without saying is that before considering taking supplements, you should try to improve your diet, and as you can imagine, it is always better to get these essential nutrients for collagen production through the diet in the form of whole foods and not processed, than through supplements. And what you should know is that vitamin C,

polysaccharides, silica, copper, zinc, and amino acids such as proline and glycine are the fundamental elements for our body to produce collagen. And, obviously, it is much more interesting to consume all these elements through the diet or through supplements than to consume collagen supplements to increase the natural production of collagen in our own body, because although collagen contains amino acids such as proline and glycine, it does not contain vitamin C, nor zinc, nor polysaccharides, nor silica, nor copper that are necessary to produce collagen. Do not be fooled by the marketing campaigns of the different companies that try to sell collagen products, since these are not the best alternative to increase the natural production of collagen in your own body. Remember, if you want to increase your collagen production, increase the intake of foods rich in protein, vitamin C, vitamin E, silica, zinc, and copper, and if you want to use supplements to increase your collagen production, the best alternatives are protein supplements such as protein

soy or pea, and supplements containing vitamin C, vitamin E, silica, zinc, and copper.
