If you're a graphic designer, or even if you just dabble in a bit of logo design, you'll have heard the term clear space. Clear space. What is it? Well, today I'm going to show you what clear space is, how you can create it very easily without any faff. Today's video is brought to you by my very own company, Assets 4D. Learn more later. So, clear space is a way of making sure that no other design assets, like type or anything in the layout, gets into the logo's personal space. It's essentially personal space. Why do we have it? For continuity across more designs, across different layouts, across different usages, but also to make sure that nothing is overlapping and it doesn't look too different from other marketing material. So here we have the logo. Now, a lot of the times clients will just be happy with this, but other designers won't be. Especially when I get logos that do not have them and I'm trying to sort of work out where to place them, how big and how small. So we have this logo here. Now how do we work out? Create a space for it? We could just you bring some guides in like this and just match them to the outermost points of the logo. And that is okay for the start. This is essentially the most outer part of the design and we kind of need to do this at the start anyway. So we have those guides there. Now what do we do? Do we just roughly bring in some guides and try and match them up? No. In fact, it's much easier than that. What we can do is we can take an element of the design. So I'm going to take, let's say, the T.

I'm going to copy that T and just bring it out here, and I'm going to change the color. I'm going to change where it is, and I'm going to bring it to the outermost point. I'm reusing the T to create space around it, and you'll see why I'm doing this in a second. So, we're going to the outermost point. Boom, we've got a bunch of T's everywhere. Doesn't look very good. Why do we do this? A lot of type design, in a lot of logo design, consistency is very important, and we just borrow different shapes to create more shapes or even just to edit one. So, to work out spacing, we just borrow the most leading shape in the logo. Then we bring out more guides like so. Doing it this way gives a good amount of spacing around, and you can see here with all those guides written that it just works. It just fits nicely.

Now what you can do here is actually map this out in your guidelines and actually measure it by pixels. If you want an easy way to actually export the create space, you simply create a shape around it. Just create a box around this clear space area, go to object down to artboard, and just convert this to an artboard. You can just drag this down like so, get rid of these guys if you desire. Then press command option and E or export four screens and export this as an SVG. So when you drag this in, it will actually have the bounding box around it already. So you don't need to faff around with it. And that means that you can just scale it to the exact place that you need it to be in your grids. If you wanted a full cover or if you wanted to just have this on the masthead of the website, you could just scale it down. But it's still got all of the clear space there, and it would just snap into place.

This is a great way of making sure the client holds to the clear space of the design. How do we do it for a normal typographic logo like my script vision? Well, we do the exact same thing, but for this script version, it's a bit easier. It's going to drag this up, copy and drag up, copy and drag down. Then I'm actually going to copy and drag it and just move it to the side here. I'll do it like this, actually. Now I'll do it like this. So I'm using the x height here, do this and obviously we can change the color of all these to whatever you want. You change the color of it. But now we have our guide position so we can actually put positions here. For my logo. What I've done is I've made just a general clear space because you see, I've done some balancing here. So the W comes further down, it actually slopes up.

Then on these shapes, you just add to the x height. Now the reason why the clear space guides, I didn't put on the tall letters, these headers or the capital ones, is because there's a lot of space just in here that needs to kind of be filled out. So when any of the thing comes close to it, it kind of balances itself out. Now that's a clear space for my logo type there, and it works pretty well. Now let's say you've got another icon or more boxy sort of design here. I've got James Johnny's logo that we designed for him now for this clear space. It doesn't particularly matter too much because it is very geometric in itself. It's very box. It can kind of stand on its own. But when we do create a space, we follow the same principle. We take the most leading shape, which is the end. We drag that out before that, we should put our guides on for Johnny.

We move around like this and more guides, and we've created some clear space. Now this only takes a couple of minutes to do, hence the short video, but this actually helps out other designers and helps you out by creating a system of how close information should be to the logo. So now I know any information can't touch here. This is how far it can go. There's a forcefield around this logo, and it looks so natural because we've used shapes from within the design, and we haven't just mathematically thought it up or taken the whole circumference and then just did its own thing.
