I'll be exploring a new place in Massachusetts, Brookline. This is a town here surrounded by the city of Boston, believe it or not, by Brighton, Alston, Fenwen, Fenway, Kenmore, Mission Hill, Jamaica Plain, and West Roxbury. But it's not a part of the city of Boston, and that's because its residents put up a fight against Boston to avoid being annexed. And now we have the town of Brookline, but it was originally called Muddy River. It's Wednesday, April 12, 2023, about 1:45 p.m. Temperature is 70 degrees Fahrenheit, 21 Celsius.

and uh it got pretty warm out. Temperatures really climbed over the past days, but let's take a look here at what Brookline looks like and how similar or different it is compared to Boston. We're looking at the fire engine building over here, and if you could read the texts across the street from me, this is the Brookline Savings Bank building. I covered a little bit of Brookline when I ventured into the Coolidge Corner area a few years ago, and also if all of you can do me a favor and let me know how the picture quality is, if there's any more pixelation from the live stream like last time. I had should be okay on signal strength, but I'm not too sure how the picture quality is going to be with the latest update here. Station streets named because the Light Rail station is right here. This is the Brookline Village station. What's interesting is that people are saying the picture looks good, but the connection strength in my streaming software tells me it's not. It says it's 366 kilobits per second, which gets me a little bit nervous. Thank you, Jay, for the ten dollars. Love the video. Glad you do, man. Thanks for tuning in. So, this is the Riverside branch of the green line. One minute away for the next light rail, so let's wait for it. We're right here, Brookline Village, and this is the direction that this train is going to Branch D, and all the green lines converge in downtown. And, um, there's one branch that goes to Union Square from here, and the other one goes to Leachmere, and some end over here at the Government Center or Park Street. It's arriving Riverside light rail. Here it comes.

powered by the overhead electric lines. [Music] It doesn't hold as many passengers as the heavy rail, but it still runs pretty well. They run frequent trains. Let's head back to where I was on Washington Street and head north along it. That's the main street in Brookline. Rihanna is asking how I'm doing in Boston. I'm doing great. We're actually not in Boston right now; we'll be walking there. I found it a little bit cool that this municipal populated municipality that's not a city in the state of Massachusetts, by the way, resisted annexation from the city of Boston, which is all around it. As I said, there's six neighborhoods of Boston that surround Brookline. Brookline doesn't even have access to the Charles River to the north. I want to do a dedicated video of Brookline, but seeing that I haven't gone live for a few days, I decided to go live now. Very similar to Boston here. I mean, the main difference that I see is that they use white street signs.

there's a Ramen spot across the street next to Liz Linder Boca Grande Mexican food. Look at this right in the middle of the square here. Town election Tuesday May 2nd and there's Brookline Bank behind it. I wonder where that came from to know that Brookline Bank still exists. Here's a nice little shot of Brookline Village at least the building that says Brookline Village old school. Uh crosswalk signal here with the hand and the words that say walk [Music]. It does seem like a very old kind of feeling in this town compared to Boston. Has some old areas too but there's a certain character here that Brookline is preserving that I kind of feel just walking through here. Here's Pokey Garden Japanese Cuisine next to Dunkin Donuts. Of course you're going to have a Dunkin Donuts in Massachusetts because that's where they were founded in Quincy no less where I visited. Thanks uh Cindy Lou Who 4.99 so happy to see you live.

I have a tie around my waist just in case I ever need it, but I don't think I am. The temperature is going to be like 70 today, 60. So warm. Tom's saying this seems like a great place to live. It does. Always reading why Brookline decided not to join the city of Boston, even though there was a lot of pressure to do so. And many of the people who settled in Brookline were wealthy residents who built up their own homes and places to work and live. So they didn't really feel as connected. They wanted to be independent. And I think there's been many publications about it, like how a town like this was able to fight off against annexation. One of the main concerns that residents had with not joining up with the city of Boston was the access to Boston's water supply.

since they had access to the aqueducts from further away, but they worked it out in the end. Now here's a First Presbyterian Church, lovely church building. [Applause] Oh, you lived in Florida for years. Oh my gosh, that's crazy. Wow, look at that. Yeah, thank you. I'm glad the weather warmed up for us. Yeah, yeah. Have fun. Oh my gosh, here I am walking in Brookline Place. I haven't really been to, and two people recognize me. Hey, they can continue on the blue flannel rise again. I'd wear mines today, but it's too hot. Oh gosh, yeah, you join at the right time, man. Hey people, it is Wednesday, April 11th, and today we'll be walking Brookline Village up Washington streets. Yeah, that's my Ken continuing intro. I like to prepare a little bit, not too much.

I memorized the stuff that I really need to know and recite, but further than that, I don't really get too much in depth. This was just mainly because of my experience. I remember when I was back in school learning history class. I would like fall asleep halfway through the lesson because the teacher would just give us so much information about stuff that we may or may not want to hear. So, I find myself just giving a little spiel in the beginning, a null intro, and then showing that then and now, or the Here and Now rather. Yeah, life begins saying the fire department getting some work. Yeah, we're getting some buffering. I don't know why, but Tom says we can learn so much from history. Oh, absolutely. [Music] Wow, look at this school, Saint Mary of the Assumption. Beautiful design. This street is so interesting. Brookline Spa, lunch and groceries. Not what I think of when I think of a spa. I think of like massages and waxing and ear services, eye services, but this is a grocery store and pizza shop.

Boston area usually has good internet services, but when I tested the signal before I went live, it was strong. I hear crazy says in Boston, a spa means something different. Maybe. Well, there's a green light here. Wait, why is it all the way over here? Wait, foreign probably a Boston slang for a convenience store. Tom Sanders says Brookline can feel a little bit European at times. I get a sense of that too. I mean, the entire city of the Boston area, well, the city of Boston and the Boston area, it's the main area of New England, so it's only understandable that the people who immigrated from England and Europe would emulate the architectural style. So, this is Harvard Court private way. Gamers Floridians says, Hey, action kid.

It's raining in Miami. Oh, I saw the flooding that happened in Miami. It did not look good. It's still raining there, unfortunately. Granted, that area of Florida needs the rain because it hasn't rained in a while. Williams Piano Shop. Look at this old neon sign. So cool. Let me look at my route, see where I can turn off because I like to check out some of the residential area too of Brookline. Stop and Shop gasoline. Wait, they sell gas? I thought Stop and Shop was a grocery store. The only wow, that's new to me. Has anyone seen a Stop and Shop gasoline station? I mean, I've seen Costco gasoline or BJ's, but Stop and Shop. Dave Reynolds says you earn sheep for gas from shopping. I could see them doing something like that. Ben says they're all around Massachusetts. Oh, they are. Well, here's the retail location of Stop and Shop. I can't even tell if there's a walk signal or not here. Pedestrian entrance. Yeah, you can. Hey, how are you? Oh my gosh, we're funny. Yeah, let's see.

Hey, they have better prices than the Mobile gasoline just up the block here. It's 345 a gallon. I hear crickets saying the school must be getting out. Yeah, it's around that time. It's 2:11. I would say like two o'clock to three o'clock. That's when the kids get out of school. It's a large group of kids coming our way. Okay, and then good for her. Tom says Brookline's probably very popular for young families. I could see that. Yeah, yeah, I'm alive, but what is it for? What's up? Oh, I explore places, neighborhoods. Yeah, that's cool. My first time in Brooklyn YouTube channel. Yeah, what is it called?

How's it going bagels and walks Albert saying they get out of school pretty early after 2 P.M. yeah I see that. Okay I see something now that I'm very familiar with because I've been here before. Here's a sign that says Brookline Coolidge Corner um. I did a walk where I walked Coolidge Corner to um I forget where. I think I did like Coolidge Corner to Fenway in a video and that was a time when it was really cold. There weren't too many people out walking around that day I remember. Let's uh see how much what was around there. I remember taking the green line to the Coolidge Corner Station and then walking North. There's a Hot Pot restaurant across the street next to Harvard cleaners. Hey you know they enforce the parking meters here in Brookline look.

the Brookline parking enforcement. So make sure you pay for your parking. Scout's house says you love Boston. I do too. We're going to be walking into Boston later on in this live stream since it borders Brookline. There's a Vietnamese restaurant, Lemongrass Vietnamese. I think there were a few Korean restaurants too in Coolidge Corner, foreign Avenue. Oh, there's Trader Joe's. Bagels and Wok says no more pixelation today. It's a good sign. Suspicious very busy intersection here. I remember this building very fondly, the SS Pierce building. Look at this Brookline Bank information center. The more you know Brookline. John F Kennedy was born in Brookline, lived the first 10 years of his life here. Puppet Showplace theater, Lars Anderson Park, poets Underground Railroad and the Dutch house. And the light rail is coming. That light rail is going to Government Center. Yeah, it costs 240 to arrived. You know what? I don't want to cross the street just like yet. Let's walk down this way.

because I see the front of Trader Joe's here, and there's also a dumpling spot. Trader Joe's, Tom Sanders, asking how is the public transport. Uh, for the most part, it works well, although it's been in decline as of late. Ask locals about the Boston Tea, and they're going to give you mixed opinions of it. I've had to take the public transportation system very frequently here. The orange and red lines run at slow speeds frequently. Orange line and the green lines can't get past the government center garage, so there's uh shuttles and detours, and it's really annoying. But there is a new uh I think president of the MBTA that they picked. He started his job on Monday, and he's saying that he's going to fix it, and it'll take some time, but we will see. I know that the MBTA is severely understaffed. That's leading to a lot of the delays on the trains and the buses. Up, I don't want to cross now. There's a light rail coming our way.

well I guess, uh, we'll wait over here. They have to obey the stop lights too. [Music] I hear Cricket says there's a lack of redundancy, so if something goes wrong, they break out the buses. Yeah, that's true. There isn't that much redundancy in the system here. There is the commuter rail, but the commuter rail does not serve the local stops, and that's not a viable option because there's too large headways. There's too, um, too large of a gap between trains on the commuter rail, and that talking crosswalk button is not working. Yeah, I hope so. I hear crickets. Hopefully, they'll invest more in the tea. With a bit of improvement, it could be great. There's a lot of work they need to do in Boston or the Massachusetts Bay Area in general, but it's all interlinked. S mice Cafe bun me sandwiches. But as much as people criticize the tea and that there is public transportation, not many cities around the world can say they have a good transportation system. There's LensCrafters.

Andrew, I have walked down Commonwealth Avenue. It's gorgeous there. [Music] This is so charming to see the Coolidge Corner. Maybe from here, I can turn right somewhere and head into Boston. Alien says just like some buildings in Germany. This building over here, this SS Pierce building, is the highlight of Brookline, I think. Really something else. I've seen videos from Europe, and this looks like a characteristic building from like Germany or Denmark, any of those places. There's nothing else like it here in Brookline. Look, there's even a Paris Cafe across the street. So if you want a taste of Europe in a European building, you go there. Tom is asking why it's there. I don't know. It makes you wonder why none of these other buildings around here were designed like that. It's been preserved pretty well. Take a look at this old movie theater. Looks like it's still going too. I thought it would be turned into a CVS by now or Dwayne Reed, but it's still a movie theater. [Music]

look at this Marucci genso and Tea House, and they have Bento boxes available. Looks like a grocery store as well. Don, I'll say Coolidge Corner Theater is a non-profit. Well, thanks for that info, foreign. Yes, uh, Texas tickler. We were mentioning that JFK was born in Brookline. Look at this, the Kennedy family home, 83 Beale Street in Brookline. And they have neighborhood updates. Let's make a right here because I want to see some of the residential area and make my way into Boston as well. So, this is Babcock Street. [Music] Thank you. Take a look at this Japanese restaurant just off of the Main Street, Shiki Japanese Cuisine. Heather says the streets are nice and clean. It really is, Brookline keeps its streets very clean. I think we could continue up the street until Freeman Street, and then there's a nice playground that I want to check out. It actually looks like it's the largest uh Park in the area. I want to go to this one over here. I'll show you. So, up here and then to this park.

and then we can make a way um through Longwood into Boston. Boston's right here. I don't think Brookline has the best wireless service for Verizon. I could try switching over to like T-Mobile or AT&T to see if that helps. I have a feeling T-Mobile might be better. Yeah, let me test T-Mobile because uh I see my connection dropping now. Yeah, let me switch to T-Mobile. Well, this is uh very, very strong and Verizon I'm not really happy with right now unless it's something else that's causing my connection to dip like this. But maybe I can do it over there on that ledge. It'll be easier for me to uh work my phones. Here we go. This is where I'm going to switch over. Hey, look at this. The Xfinity uh truck just rolled up. Unfortunately, I don't have Xfinity uh uh where is my huh my SIM card ejector tool. There it is. I always keep one in my wallet just in case. SIM cards. T-Mobile had perfect service from what I could tell on that speed test. Thank you. We're back. All right, getting a little bit windy out here. Eyeglass lady says that was seamless. Okay, now I have 6,000 kilobits per second steady. Verizon, my signal was going up and down. This is such a gorgeous area. Look at this. They even have their own magnolia tree in the back. Hung Mouse says it looks like a movie set. Yeah, it does. There's a lot of variety in architecture styles here in Brookline. Wow, look at this. How about this home here, purple, and then you have this. I think these are Yoshino cherry trees, cherry blossoms here in Boston, anyone? Yeah, they are. It's a cherry blossom tree. There's two of them here, and this is a pretty large Yoshino cherry tree too. This is called the Dwight Square. I think I picked a pretty good block of Brookline. A walk. I'm glad I came over to this residential area performing Colossus, saying that it's big.

money to live in Brookline. I think. I think so too. It seems like a very desirable part of the Boston metro area to live. I'm glad during my visit to the Boston area this time. I've been coming out to places like this, these smaller municipalities and areas that not many tourists check out. They'll stay in downtown Boston and do the touristy stuff, but I like to venture out to places like these once in a while. Gorgeous-looking homes. It's not peanut butter jelly. Now I might have. We're coming up on Freeman Street where I'm going to turn right and head into that playground. JR says, I love it when AK goes off the beaten track. Yeah, I've been um doing that a lot more often lately. Robert says I should check out Somerville. I've been to Somerville before. It's a very nice area. I did a long walk from Harvard, I think, across Somerville to Assembly Square in a live stream. Some flowers are blooming down here, and if you checked out my video from yesterday, I published my walk of North.

Quincy and Wollaston, Massachusetts, that was a very exciting area to check out rare. Yeah, Richard, I hope so. I hope these homes and condos update on the inside. The problem with many of these buildings is that they're so old. The infrastructure inside starts to deteriorate. The plumbing goes bad. The flooring starts creaking and warping. You have to replace stuff. I know many of these old homes, they have trouble redoing the interior. Thank you. It also recently looks like they filled in these potholes here on the road, so it's good to see that they're keeping up with their road maintenance. This looks like an old church. I'm just a girl says old homes were built to last. Modern homes can't hold a candle to Old World craftsmanship. Yeah, I've noticed a lot of older construction. Many people actually desire them because they were built with better materials than modern buildings. I often see them too, even something as new as 432 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. You would think that would be a perfect building, but

there are engineering flaws in it. The elevators are starting to shift, and it's not looking good. And I've also seen buildings constructed where they use cheap materials, and it starts weathering only after a few years. Pleasant Street, taking a walk through this neighborhood, feels to me like Forest Hills, Queens, in a way, or like Jamaica, Queens. Routilia says every house and building has a problem: termites, ants, and plumbing. Yeah, that's a lot to deal with, although not if you have stone construction. Then termites aren't really that much of an issue, but if there's any kind of wood foundation or anything made of wood in the home, yeah, termites are a big problem. You know, I think this was the playground in the, uh, no, it can't be. That's Winthrop Square, and the one I'm looking for is a block away, two blocks away. I saw that Dutch man, the tree growing around the wrought iron fence block sign is on for all crossings. Oh, I see that park up ahead. It looks

very nice, yeah, that's right. I hear crickets, lots of red brick because of lots of clay, and brick lasts longer than wood. Yeah, the wood is a good material, but the problem is it starts to rot over time. It loses strength, and then, as we mentioned before, it has the problem with termites. You have to worry about them because they will eat any piece of wood. Oh, I'm so glad I switched over to T-Mobile from Verizon. We've had nothing but steady signal strength ever since. That's right. Time we're walking down the hill, stop sign. All right, here we are at the park that I was seeing. This is called Armory Park. There's also a pond up ahead too. You know, uh, going back to Toronto since can continue. It was on here a little while ago. This also looks very similar to Cabbage Town, even though there's not that many Victorian homes. Oh, this is going to be so nice to walk around this pond. I can already tell. No, Lena, I've never been here. This is my first time in this park.

uh, there's a gate up ahead. Hopefully, it can be opened. Halls Pond sanctuary. How are people in there then? I cannot figure this thing out. Maybe open and pull back. Hmm, lift the top latch. Oh man, I was looking down here all the time with my camera. [Music] Duh, I was looking where my camera was pointing and not at the whole gate. Very squeaky though. Halls Pond sanctuary. Foreign transmission is unstable. Looks like it's recovering now. Hopefully, I don't lose you all in this walk here. Wow, what a Hidden Gem in Brookline. I just decided to come here and we get met with this. This is why I like going off the beaten path sometimes. What's up? Okay, look at it. The connection is uh, coming and going through this pathway. I'm glad I wandered in here. Hopefully, there's another gate on the south side. Someone didn't close the gate here. Wow, how Rusty is escape. [Music] That would be a good movie sound effect, you know? I'm gonna have some fun with this.

In fact, yeah, it would be. Let's see, where are we now? Uh, uh, we are down here. Oh, wow, that's Beacon Street right there where the green line is. We can take that right into Boston to Fenway. We should be able to, uh, find out where the Border changes. Well, you know what, I can even go down here too through another local park. There's like a Waterway there. Yeah, let me do that because I've already been up here. It's well, I have to cross the street here. It's hardly milstein. I just saw you walking by right now and I couldn't believe was actually you were actually here in Boston. I, I am. I'm here. I, uh, walked into the Armory playground and Park in Brookline, headed back to Boston now. [Music] Yeah, Dave, we're going to take the scenic

route. I don't want to take Beacon Street. This is a pretty standard street. We're going to go through the park. Let's cross now. Looks like the cargo stops. Good thing I looked before I started walking. Really, Donald? I didn't know they were called streetcar suburbs. So, I'm over here now. Gonna go right to this bridge into the Massachusetts. What is this? Hospital area. This is still Brookline. Foreign says just like in New York City. Subways followed by development. I can see that here. I know Veronique. There's some really nice homes here in Brookline. Wow, look at this town of Brookline. Longwood Mall. Longwood Mall is graced with what Charles Sprague Sergeant, founder of Arnold Arboretum, called the finest exotic trees which have been planted in Greater Boston and probably the finest of European beach in the United States. Wow, exotic trees. I just wish there were leaves on these trees though, but I came too early. Let's see how we're going to cross the Boston through this park path.

We've been walking almost for an hour and a half in Brookline. Yeah, Richard, I was reading that Brookline is surrounded by Boston on three sides. I can see why they didn't want to join Boston either. It looks different than Boston, and it has its own unique identity. This home is huge. All right, let's see how this works now because across the river is Boston. How do we get in here now? Church looks like I have to go down there. I was looking up on Google Maps that there's a bridge. Oh, there it is. There's the bridge. And look at these train tracks down below us. So, not only do we have to cross the bridge, I also have to cross over the train tracks. I think that should be pretty easy with this train station here. They have to have a crossover somewhere. I think that's it, that yellow piece of land there that they marked. There are so many light rail stops here. It's pretty easy for the residents who live here to get to downtown, I would think. They're at the Beacon Street Light Rail.

there's the other one at Coolidge Corner. This one here, Longwood, four minutes for the next Light Rail to Boston. The good thing about this light rail is that it uses overhead power, so there's no risk of electrocution by walking across the tracks. Gail says, Can you get on it? Yeah, it's a passageway. People allow to go across. I've seen people do it right now, but I'm here just to get into the park so I can walk in the Boston. You know, this is kind of dumb because they have the crossing over there, but you have to walk over this way anyway to get anywhere. I should have just gone over here in the first place. I thought there was an entrance over there. Yeah, I'm okay. Ow, so my phone's cracked now. My hand is all messed. Risk of live streaming because I'm stupid. I walked too close to the yellow curb, and there's my bracelet which just cracked. My microphone broke. My gimbal is damaged. My fingers bleeding. I didn't hit my head. I caught myself in

the fall with my hands. Thank goodness, uh, I don't feel any pain like, uh, like pain. I would break any bones or anything. It's just got, I just got bruised up. That's all, yeah, wow. So that happened on live stream. All right, uh, does this even work still? I have blood on my gimbal. Looks like it's a pretty big gash. Let me see how bruised I am over here. I appreciate everyone, uh, worrying about me. I'm hurt, but nothing serious, just bruised. This will heal on its own pretty easily. There's no bones broken or anything. I can move everything. I'm gonna pick up my bracelet now. Well, uh, my phone is damaged. Well, I could still use it. Uh, looks like the corner of it got broke. Uh, a little bit caught up there, but oh boy. Well, that's what's left of my bracelet. Oh boy. I used to have some Band-Aids in here, but I don't. Wow, this thing is so messed up. I can't even put it in the case anymore. Yeah, this one is not gonna work anymore. All right, this is still okay, but I can't use it anymore. Oh man, good thing I fell on my hands. Uh, my phone and gimbal, it took a lot of damage, which is good because it didn't, I didn't hurt myself further because that took a lot of it, and nothing here got broken or anything. We're good. Oh, okay, let me finish this walk now, and uh.

We gotta get to Boston still, okay? [Music] Zamoras asked if I'm bleeding. Yeah, I'm bleeding a little bit. It's scarring up now, so it's just a bruise. It's nothing that's dripping. Okay, that was a bad fall. I had it looked bad, but I saved myself from getting hurt further. I'm just gonna walk over this bridge here to the busier area of Boston, and I'm gonna end this live stream because I need to get into a pharmacy, get some bandages. Tom says we're all human. It happens. Yeah, for sure. I mean, every day I'm grateful that something doesn't happen to me, getting hurt with my health or anything, and thankfully this time it's just a little fall. I survived it, but I'll heal up for sure. [Music] You know what's very interesting? My right hand did not suffer any bleeding at all. It's just a little bit bruised here, but it didn't puncture the skin. But this got bruised and over here.

do you know why my right hand didn't get more bruised? It's because my phone took it, my phone and my gimbal as I'm holding it. But uh, I'm gonna have to probably get my phone repaired because I don't want little pieces of glass to uh, hurt me and my gimbal. I gotta get fixed to or probably even just replaced. Cindy Lou Who says your phone saved my hand. Yeah, it did. Was not paying attention to the yellow platform end strip. He cashed with two dollars, two blocks away from the best hospitals on Earth. I know that's why I'm headed over there because I know this pharmacies and everything. Lena says is it really cracked upper left corner has damage to it. But you know what? I have Apple Care on this phone. I can get it replaced. I'm gonna have a big visit to the Apple Store. Foreign says there's an Apple Store nearby at least if you need it. Yeah, look into it. I know there's one in the Back Bay. Tomorrow says you should get the bruises.
