Hello, this is Wonkyeong. Recently, I heard someone talking about self-studying bass as a hobby. So, I decided to make this video to share some stories about self-studying bass. Although I said I would talk about self-studying bass, it seems like it will cover many areas. For those who are thinking of starting self-studying now or already doing it, I believe this video will be very helpful. First of all, bass is not a boring instrument. Of course, bass is very charming. And I dare to say that it eventually becomes a more attractive instrument than any other instrument. However, the process is extremely boring. Where is the fun of the process? Some of you may say that bass is an instrument that supports other instruments as a backing wheel, due to its characteristics.

Due to its strong tendency, I think it may seem a bit boring and difficult at first. So, when people come to take a lesson from me, I tell them, It's a 2nd base, why didn't you know that? Learn it from the basics in a different semester. This is really not a joke. I usually say that unlocking level 5 is important. Base 1 is easy to get into, so many people do a lot of 2nd base. But the difficulty comes quickly again. In the beginning, even if you listen to the metronome every day, choose a song, and play it on the chrome, you won't know 5 books. [Music] 898 n ska. Oh everyone, turning my attention to string instruments, I ended up blaming my own talent and looking for additional posts, and your base becomes a beautiful memory and disappears into a corner just like that. It's only been a few years since I started playing the bass, when I started practicing, it was so fun that I just abandoned the bass in a state of not being interested in it. But it's not just once or twice, it really happened frequently back then. First of all, apart from self-study, you need to prepare for patience when starting to learn. If you are the type who can't concentrate well with just 3 things, or the type who tries this and that while watching TV, it's not recommended to waste your precious time on learning the bass. Even if you keep playing the bass after the gum passes and move forward, most of the time, it's overseas. Since there is no curriculum for yourself, you may feel lost about what to do.

First of all, in my case, except for educational instruments covered in elementary, middle, and high school curricula, the bass guitar was the first instrument I touched. It was just a few years ago when I was 17 years old. I was encouraged to start playing the bass when I first saw it at church. I received various tips from older students in high school, and I also searched for various information on the internet and practiced various things. I think I ended up practicing all sorts of unorganized information without properly finishing anything. It seems like I even practiced unnecessary techniques. One problem I think about when returning to school is among the vast amount of bold information in this world, whether I can sequentially and detailedly list the information that is suitable for my level and necessary for me to apply to my child. It's not easy, right? So, I think it is necessary to find a good teacher and take lessons. Also, when playing an instrument, it is important to pay attention to equipment, accessories, and maintenance.

Studying on your own, you might think that you need to invest more time in researching this and that, wasting time before receiving lessons from a teacher. You may also think that you are purchasing the teacher's skills and curriculum with the money you pay. However, I believe that receiving lessons is not about spending time and money. It's about valuing and protecting my precious time. Please give it to me. [Music] I couldn't even imagine myself playing the bass until now. When I look back on my youth, going to church and joining the high school band led me to start playing the bass. I didn't have any talent for it at first, but with effort and practice every day, the things I played back then greatly helped shape who I am today. One of my mentors told me to play the bass a lot no matter what. In this busy modern society, where everyone is in a hurry to save time, this sentiment resonates deeply.

I think everyone who gives me lessons has that kind of mind. I think they have studied a lot of bass, whether they watched lessons or self-studied. There is a very famous 10,000-hour rule. It says that if a person invests a lot of time in a certain field, they become a professional in that field. A bassist that I really like said he practiced for 10,000 hours three times. You may not be trying to become a professional musician through self-study, but if you practice a lot of different things, have patience, and perseverance, and continue to perform, wouldn't you eventually reach a level of skill that satisfies yourself, even if it's not at a professional level? [Music] Don't worry if you think you have bad habits as a bassist. Let me tell you a story about a guitarist I saw. He tried to self-study the guitar but ended up going in the opposite direction.

I started with the guitar. Even after realizing that I was good at playing the instrument, I didn't correct myself. Then I went to a very famous university and now I am a professional musician, investing in 8 albums. When you look at foreign musicians, there are many who play really strangely. Oh, yes, when doing bass hangerling, some people say that if you hear the sound of your fingernails, you did it wrong. Then are all the people I saw now a mess if this is important? If you look for interviews with famous musicians, they say they practiced with outdated equipment by constantly moving the needle on the LP record and listening to songs until the cassette tape stretched out. I think their perseverance and passion for finding good sound through traveling was the answer. In music, there is no right answer, and art has a high degree of freedom.

Whether this way or that way, I believe that first and foremost, if you enjoy it and furthermore, if it sounds good when others hear it and when you hear it, and if it moves you, then I think that's all there is to it. Rather than pursuing external appearances and having a somewhat rigid attitude, try approaching the bass with passion and an open mind. I think good results will follow. It's true that there are differences between receiving lessons and self-study, but I feel it's regrettable to draw conclusions based solely on that. Just because you are self-taught doesn't mean you lack skills, and just because you take lessons doesn't mean you are extremely talented. It's a matter of not achieving anything without diligent practice and a passionate attitude. Nevertheless, if I were to give a recommendation, I would still suggest trying to take at least a few lessons. As the saying goes, one is as good as one knows, having a certain level of knowledge about music will make self-study much easier.

So far, what I have said may not be 100% correct, but I think attitude in Chapter 4-7 is really important. Please think carefully about the method that suits your personality and decide whether to take lessons or return to school. That would be great. The video ends here.
