Why is South Korea, who just a few short years ago was a minor player in the global defense industry, suddenly becoming a powerhouse? Global military spending hit $2.718 trillion in 2024, at least according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute or SIPRI.

But the one problem that a lot of that money is running into is production capacity. You can fund the program and sign the contract, but if the factories and shipyards are already booked, delivery dates don't just magically move closer.

So buyers have started filtering the market differently.

It's not just what's the best system, but who can actually deliver soon in volume and with spares and support.

That shift is a big reason why South Korea keeps showing up in deal after deal. According to SIPRI, South Korea was at about 2.2% of global major arms exports from 2020 to 2024.

From 2010 to 2014, the country was at just 0.9%.

This is in large part because South Korea has something a lot of countries are short on right now: an industrial base that can build high-end hardware at scale, like chips, cars, and ships, and then apply that same production discipline to defense.

The spending surge itself isn't really mysterious.

Russia's war in Ukraine forced Europe to rebuild stockpiles and replace equipment. The Middle East has been burning through air defense capacity and munitions in real time.

And in the Pacific, we should probably have more ships is no longer a theoretical discussion. But what changed after 2022 is the way buyers started shopping.

Instead of picking a handful of exquisite systems for a small professional force, governments started acting like they might have to sustain a long fight.

That pushes you towards the more boring questions that decide whether your military is real or just a parade unit. If you're a buyer, those questions about quantity, quality, and longevity turn into a very simple filter: Who has capacity right now?

The US has it in some areas and not in others.

Europe has it in some areas and not in others, and South Korea has it in a bunch of places people suddenly care about.

To understand why, you have to back up and look at South Korean manufacturing in general, because the defense story is basically the industrial story just wearing camouflage.

South Korea built its modern economy by exporting manufactured goods into markets that don't tolerate excuses.

Semiconductors are its biggest export item at 141.9 billion in 2024. These are some of the most difficult things to make with tolerances measured in nanometers.

To put that into perspective, 1 millimeter is 100,000 nanometers. So to build semiconductors at scale is just no easy task.

That pressure creates a particular kind of national competency: process control, supplier networks, automation, and a culture that treats quality and throughput like survival skills.

The big thing, automation, is where South Korea has a noticeable advantage. The US Department of Commerce, citing the International Federation of Robots, says that South Korea has the world's highest robot density at 1,002 industrial robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers.

Then there's heavy industry. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, which I will call UNCTAD, notes that in 2023, China, South Korea, and Japan accounted for about 95% of global shipbuilding output, and South Korea's share was 28.2%.

Shipbuilding is really where you see the Korean advantage in a way that's hard to fake.

You're talking about massive projects with complex supply chains and schedules that punish you if you can't coordinate thousands of parts, hundreds of contractors, and a workforce that has to do the same job the same way every single time.

This expertise shows up repeatedly through their other industries like automotive, appliances, and consumer electronics.

This is the bridge to defense. Modern weapons are not built in isolation.

And they're built out of motors, power electronics, sensors, precision machining, high-quality steel, and a supply chain that can keep up.

If you're already building cars, ships, and consumer electronics at a global scale, you've already built a lot of the habits and infrastructure that defense manufacturing depends on.

So, when people say South Korea can deliver defense gear fast, what they're really saying is South Korea has an economy built around turning designs into repeatable production.

Now just add geography. South Korea sits across the Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ, from North Korea, who they are still technically at war with.

North Korea is not the most stable neighbor to have.

They're kind of like the old guy in your neighborhood that really never leaves his house except to maybe throw trash on some lawns and sometimes he shoots guns out of his windows.

But seriously, the two countries have traded artillery fire and other aggressions before, and that creates situations.

When the U.S. through President Nixon and the Nixon Doctrine reduced its military presence on the peninsula in the early 1970s, South Korean President Park Chung-hee initiated a program to reduce reliance on foreign defense industries.

This was officially called the Heavy and Chemical Industry Drive.

As far as defense, they started by making U.S. designs under license before branching out to their homegrown stuff that they make today. This kept domestic demand relatively steady, and steady demand keeps production lines alive and evolving.

So, when the rest of the world started arming up, South Korea had the production capacity and the know-how to build weapons quickly.

On top of that, they can price competitively because they've built a manufacturing ecosystem that scales.

And they've gotten very comfortable offering what a lot of buyers actually want: not just the platform, but the whole package, training, spares, support, and a path to co-production.

CRI's background on South Korea's arms industry shows just how fast the export profile changed.

In 2010 to 2014, more than 90% of South Korea's major arms exports went to just Turkey or Indonesia.

In 2020 to 2024, the recipient list spread to 23 states, with more than half going to Europe, and Poland alone accounting for 46%.

And what they're exporting is pretty varied as well. They have tanks, armored fighting vehicles, ships and boats, jets, multiple launch rocket systems, artillery, and much, much more.

The weapon that so far has found itself in the most places is the K9 Thunder, a self-propelled 155mm howitzer that has been supplied to 11 countries and is now built by Hanwha Aerospace.

Despite what you may have heard about artillery being obsolete in the age of drones, the fact is that it is in more demand now than it ever has been, but it has to evolve.

Mobility is king these days. So, for the king of battle, being able to move before counter-battery fire comes your way is essential.

The K9 can fire a burst of three rounds in just 15 seconds or a max of about 6 to 8 a minute before high- tailing it out of there.

That's good because in Ukraine, we've seen counter-battery fire show up in just 3 minutes.

Turkey, Poland, Finland, India, and several others have bought the Thunder, and the U.S. may take a close look at it as it weighs replacing the M109s.

Another popular piece of armor is the K2 Black Panther main battle tank made by Hyundai Rotem.

With a crew of three and a 120-millimeter L-55 gun, the same that's found on the 2A6 Leopard tanks, this has become the darling of Poland, especially the European country with an eye towards Russian aggression signed a deal for 180 Black Panthers in August of 2025, and is set to become a major manufacturing hub for the vehicles with 64 of the first 180 to be made in Poland.

A complement to the tank and the Arty is the Redback from Hanwha.

This is showing up in a lot of conversations. The Redback is an infantry fighting vehicle or an IFV.

It comes set up for a crew of three with six dismounts and is armed with a 30mm Bushmaster chain gun, can fire Spike anti-tank guided missiles, and has a remote weapon system that can accommodate machine guns, grenade launchers, and just crew-served weapons in general.

In July of 2023, Australia announced that it would select Hanwha's Redback as its preferred vehicle.

This came after a long, serious competition for a modern infantry fighting vehicle tied directly to Australia's push for sovereign defense industry and long-term sustainment.

Then in December 2023, Australia signed contracts with Hanwha Defense Australia for 129 locally built Redback infantry fighting vehicles.

The Australian government said the total project value is about $7 billion and the combined value of the acquisition and initial support contract is about $4.5 billion.

Winning a program like this isn't only about the vehicle's armor, gun, or sensors, though those things do matter.

But it's also about proving you can run a disciplined industrial program inside someone else's country under their political constraints and then support it for decades.

Finally, I want to talk about the K239 Chunmoo.

And not just because that's a pretty fun word to say, but because it is showing up everywhere. The Chunmoo is a multiple launch rocket system or MLRS.

And like the US HIMARS, it carries six guided rockets.

Poland is a major operator right now with 290 operational or on order as the Home R. And to be honest, most of them are still on order, but 290 is a lot.

And once again, they will be made in Poland. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates also have some, and Estonia and Norway have both recently signed agreements with Hanwha.

Now, we talked about all those systems, not because we like talking about weapons, but because those are kind of the most visible exports from South Korea.

They have other things, and a big push is now coming to export the KF-21 4.5 generation fighter to go along with the FA-50 light attack jet and the T-50 advanced trainer.

The country also offers a stable of frigates, corvettes, submarines, and support ships, but more on those a little bit later.

All this is to say that South Korea is a serious contender for major weapons contracts now.

Something that you really couldn't have said just five or six short years ago. And now the story flips back to urgency, because Europe, where things are urgent right now, is where this trend becomes impossible to ignore.

After 2022, when Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and as I record this on February 24th, it's been four years since they started their three-day special military operation.

But anyways, European militaries got hit with two simultaneous problems. They were sending equipment to Ukraine and needed replacements, and they were relearning that stockpiles and maintenance pipelines don't magically exist if you haven't funded them in 20 years.

So European buyers started thinking in terms of timelines and industrial base and not just in performance charts and spec sheets.

This is where South Korea's approach fits well: deliver quickly, then talk about local production and sustainment, and the broader trend is visible in the data.

SIPRI's arms transfer fact sheet shows that Europe's arms imports surged in 2020 to 2024 compared to the previous four-year period.

This is a sign of how quickly demand grew and how much procurement shifted into a "get it now" mode.

The result that we are seeing today is that Korea isn't just selling equipment into Europe; it's embedding itself into European rearmament plans, especially in places that want both capability and industrial participation.

And that's the version of the story that most people watch. On the U.S. side, the angle is just a little bit different, but it's also very similar.

Because for the United States, the most immediate Korean advantage isn't a tank or a howitzer; it's shipyard capacity.

The U.S. Navy doesn't have a shortage of strategy plans. It has a shortage of maintenance capacity.

Public shipyards are modernizing under the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program, or SIOP, COP, I don't know, which is supposed to be a long-term overhaul of dry docks, facilities, and equipment.

The Government Accountability Office, or GAO, has been blunt about how hard that is.

In 2023, GAO said that the Navy had not developed a full cost and schedule estimate for SIOP, and the Navy reported it wouldn't be able to do that until fiscal year 2025.

Now, as far as I know, they still have not quite done that.

Now, this doesn't mean that SIOP is a failure. It means it's a long timeline in a world that's just getting less patient.

So, the near-term question is relatively simple: While the U.S. modernizes shipyards at home, where does extra maintenance capacity come from?

One answer is allied shipyards, especially in the Indo-Pacific. In March 2025, Military Sealift Command announced that USNS Wally Schirra completed a 7-month regular overhaul at Hanwha Ocean in South Korea.

It was major maintenance, and it's significant because it shows allied yards can take on real workload, not just quick port calls.

Then in August of 2025, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced it had won a maintenance, repair, and overhaul contract for another US Navy auxiliary ship, the USNS Allen Shepard, as part of a broader pattern of Korea pitching itself as a maintenance partner for US forces in the region.

You can argue about whether this is outsourcing, but that's not the operational question.

The operational question is that if a ship can get a big chunk of work done in theater, does it get back to work faster than if it has to transit back to the US and wait for a dry dock slot?

In a Pacific fight, especially, that answer matters a lot.

The other major piece of the US relationship is Korean industry planting roots inside the United States.

In 2024, Hanwha Systems and Hanwha Ocean announced a $100 million acquisition of Philly Shipyard, a Jones Act commercial shipbuilder.

This does not mean Hanwha is about to crank out US destroyers next week. But it does mean Korean firms are positioning themselves inside the US industrial landscape at a time when Washington is treating shipbuilding and ship repair like strategic industries.

Once again, put those pieces together, the in-theater maintenance capacity plus investment inside US shipbuilding, and you get an idea of the importance of the South Korean defense industry.

It is tempting to end this story with a neat conclusion that South Korea is becoming the arsenal of democracy now, but that's not really how this works.

Korea's capacity is impressive, but it is not infinite. Export deals still do run into bottlenecks with things like foreign components and the politics of technology transfer and sustainment.

Why The World Is Buying South Korean Weapons
