When you're thinking about buying a whiskey for home, I first recommend Jameson. The price is reasonable, the taste is also decent, and it's good for making highballs. At Costco, you can substitute it with Kirkland Irish Whiskey. This video feels like a guide for friends who are just starting to explore whiskey and highballs. Besides Jameson, other cost-effective whiskeys include Jim Beam and Suntory Kakubin. Kakubin is known for its value, although in Japan, it costs less than half. The reason I recommend it is due to its recognition; most people are familiar with Jim Beam highballs or Suntory highballs. Therefore, it has great value for entertaining guests and offers a high level of satisfaction for solo drinking as well. In fact, even when you have only single malt whiskeys available, many people prefer Suntory highballs. You can mix it with lemon juice, soda water, or tonic water.

After stocking your refrigerator, if you watch my shorts linked below, you will roughly conquer a cost-effective highball. From there, two options typically arise: one is developing an interest in a wider variety of whiskey, and the other is becoming interested in various cocktails. If you're low on money, I don't recommend diving into whiskey first. Once you buy about five bottles of whiskey, you'll likely find that your expenses exceed 120,000 won. I’ve become a bit poor because of this, too. On the other hand, cocktails are about mixing cheaper spirits to create something delicious, so you can definitely save money with cocktails. The process of making them also feels more sophisticated. To make cocktails, you’ll need a few more things besides whiskey. I’ll recommend one cost-effective option each for gin, rum, vodka, tequila, brandy, and liqueur. For gin,

You can start with Gordon's gin, which is easily found in supermarkets at a price around 10,000 won. This will serve as a base for cocktails like gin and tonic, martini, and negroni. For rum, start with Bacardi White. It’s readily available at large supermarkets, and you can find it cheaper at places like Traders or Costco. The 700ml bottle is currently priced around 17,000 won at Traders, as the price has dropped a bit. Just be careful not to buy the mojito next to it, as the cocktails you can make will be somewhat limited. With rum, you can make cocktails like Cuba Libre, mojito, and daiquiri, which are all famous and really delicious. For vodka, if you are a Costco member, you can buy any Kirkland vodka. At Traders, Absolute is a good choice, or you could go for something like Smirnoff Red. If you’re at Homeplus, New Amsterdam is also a good option. You can make cocktails like cosmopolitan, Moscow mule, and Cape Cod.

It's true that most juices or carbonated drinks mix well with it to create a delicious cocktail, so it's definitely a good idea to have at least one bottle on hand. However, I recommend avoiding flavored vodkas, like apple-flavored ones, as they limit the cocktails you can make. Next, for tequila, Jose Cuervo is a safe choice. When you check at Trader Joe's, you'll see both the clear silver and the yellow reposado. I recommend starting with the yellow reposado, and when you feel the need for the clear one, you can buy the silver. Some may insist on getting 100% blue agave tequila, but I personally believe that Jose Cuervo offers great value for the price. I always buy a bottle of tequila from Costco, but I feel that the flavor might not suit everyone's palate, especially for Koreans. While I think the quality is good for the price, it's a bit tricky to recommend it to everyone. Tequila is great for margaritas and Mexicola.

You can make the same cocktails, and I particularly like Tommy's Margarita. As for brandy, well, honestly, I think it's fine to buy some lesser-known brandy that you occasionally see at the store for around 20,000 to 30,000 won for cocktail use. I bought Kirkland X5, and while it was enjoyable, I don't think it's necessary to go that far. Brandy mixed with soda water for a highball is also quite nice, and it makes a delicious Alexander cocktail. Now, you might be curious about liqueurs. They are essential for cocktails, but honestly, the liqueurs you need to buy can vary greatly depending on the cocktail you want to make. If I were to mention the ones you absolutely need, Triple Sec and Blue Curacao are almost basic. If you look up some recipes, you'll see these pop up frequently.

It's fine to store it at room temperature for a long time, so it's good to buy some. The triple sec is the sweet orange peel liqueur, which you can see on the left as the original version called Cointreau. In recipes, they are interchangeable. Cointreau is a triple sec, and triple sec can be referred to as Cointreau. These days, you can often find Cointreau at Trader Joe's or Costco. Additionally, I frequently use Midori melon liqueur, Crème de Cassis, Disaronno, and Angostura bitters. As you explore cocktail recipes, you'll likely come across items that you'll want to purchase, so I recommend buying them as needed. As for where to buy them, I usually go to large supermarkets or liquor shops. In Seoul, you can check out places like Jooyang Mart in Kondae or Dongbu Mart in Jungnang-gu. There’s also the option to order from convenience stores and pick them up a few days later, like at GS in our neighborhood.

You can use apps like Pocket CU or Daily Shot. Daily Shot is also good because it helps you get a rough idea of the general lowest prices. You can find a liquor shop that sells at the lowest price and pick it up like you would at a convenience store. I often use this method as well. If you enter a friend referral code when you sign up for Daily Shot, you can get a discount of 5,000 won. I think this should be helpful for your mission.
