This is one of the most incredible things I've ever pulled out of a bull's foot, and in this video we revisit this

huge Charlie Bull to see how he's doing now. And let's rush when I see you dance and the moment when I fall and time goes

slow. I fall into [Music] You okay? So we've been having some problems. This bull went incredibly lame

on his front left foot. We got him in the crush and discovered this pouring out the toe of that outside claw. But that

was a good thing; it meant we could fix this bull. And actually, we did fix him, and he is going fantastically well. The

trouble comes when the farmer phones you the next week and his other bull has also gone lame, but on the other front

right foot. This is where it got really tricky, though. We couldn't find anything wrong. We used pressure testers on that

inside claw to determine that that was where the problem was coming from. So we put a block on the outside claw and

instructed the farmer to give him some pain-relieving medication and seek advice from the vet. When he left the

crush, he was not looking well at all, and I said to the farmer to call us in a

week if he hadn't improved. Well, it is a week later, and he hasn't improved, so we're going to attempt to find the

problem once and for all. The only trouble is the weather's not fantastic; it's...

cases like this one where everybody needs to work together as a team. The people on the farm, the hoof trimmers, and the vets involved in hoof

care are there for the care of the cows, and sometimes they need to work together to eventually come up with a solution. We

are really struggling with this bull, and I'm hoping that now he's in the crush we can find something.

Obviously, although he's not particularly sore or lame on this back right foot, he did have two small problems the last

time I trimmed them, so I take the opportunity to make sure that they are healing up. He's so—no, uh, you

[Music] Dead really hot, excessive heat within a cow's hoof horn or a bull's hoof horn in

this case is a real sign that there could be infection within the hoof capsule. It's not a call for me to make

though; that is one for the farmer and the vet to decide. I'm here purely in a hoof trimmer capacity, which limits what

I can and cannot do. During the first visit trimming this bull's foot, there were small cracks in this area of his white line. They didn't

come to anything then, but I'm hoping the antibiotics that this bull has been receiving will have separated the sole

now, and I find something obvious, something that I can treat and something that I can actually do something about. I feel with my hands and look with

my eyes if there's any signs of foul in the foot in these interdigital spaces. This is a problem that can easily be

missed, unfortunately. On this occasion, it's not the case. Really struggling to see the problem, to be completely honest. I'm beginning to

clutch at straws. There's a tiny crack in the toe area of his foot. I don't think

it is anything, but I've been wrong in the past. Lots of times you drag them, and then what happens is they start to heal, so

they end up with a double sole and all just go at the bottom of it. I was hoping that's what would happen here because he's

had—like he had a full bottle of farm—and just over 3 days, like he's got—I think he's going

slightly better, but only because he's got that on, not because he's fixed. He was jumping a bit.

When he's not... Now, there's a possibility the problem is under the block, but I have my doubts. A tiny bit of

attached. I took that off, but I think he's walking slightly better with it on. Do you think he's going better with the block

on or not? Like a... that's what I mean, like a tiny bit. But that could... I don't think removing this block

will make a difference, and I don't think it'll reveal any problems. But I am willing to try. I'm fine with being wrong.

We're getting it fixed. Try to get it off without taking too much hoof away. Isn't easy. I asked your father for your

head, but it didn't matter what he said. [Music] It's not... he's not reacting the same as he did

the last [Music] time. As you can tell, we're a little bit stumped with this one. And as we let them

out of the crush, I'm not sure removing the block was the right decision. Okay, so we were here just to

trim that. Charlie B and he managed to sneak another one in. Usually, when somebody tells me their animal has

probably stood on a nail, I always just agree with them politely and just assume that that's not the case. In this case, it

is definitely the case. Look at that! The bone is directly above that nail. And in cases like this, you assume it's only the

tip of the nail because it couldn't possibly go right the way through the bone. Oh, how wrong you can

[Music] be! Oh my [Music] God! I swear to... that was going to be the end of a nail. And again, I thought I

could only see the head of it, and I thought that's just like the tip of a nail or something. And the whole thing

for it... the sheer size of that nail completely blew me away. Luckily, we were due to visit this farm anyway to treat

That Charlie Bull and the farmer spotted this bull lame that morning, so he wasn't in pain for all that long a time.

I genuinely thought there's no way that would be a nail, although the farmer was quick off the mark and his...

As soon as this bull became lame, we treated them. You never truly know how long a nail like that has been in the foot, so you never

know what damage you're about to uncover. There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that nail literally penetrated its way

right the way through the bone within the soft capsule, so the mess underneath could have been very substantial. It's

cleaned up quite well actually, hasn't it? This... this antibiotic or spray that we're not allowed to prescribe, but the vet

gives the farmer to be on hand for emergency situations like this. Ouch! That was far more eventful than I thought it

was going to be. We're actually going to get that other wheel back in because he was walking slightly better with the

block on, so we might as well get him back in. It is kind of endless and frustrating, but I'd much rather put a

block back on him and have him walking better while we're here. And with that, we can let this little guy go and attempt

to get the big boy back in. [Applause] [Music] You win some, you lose some. Although we

haven't found the root cause of the problems for this big Charlie Bull, I'm more than happy that we have done

everything in our power to make them more comfortable and that hopefully we eventually will find what the real

problem is. And as for the little Angus bull, just look at how well he's going now that that nail's been removed.
