Thanks to Best Pen, I got my hands on the Platinum and Black Edition models. What makes a pencil worth over $300?

We'll dive into the components, variations, and writing experience. And I'll give you a sneak peek at next year's limited-edition Perfect Pencil.

First, the Perfect Pencil is, well, a pencil. But it's a pencil taken to the extreme of luxury.

Let's break down how they've elevated it to such premium standards. When you buy a Perfect Pencil, it comes in this elegant case.

You order a pencil, but it arrives in a stunning wooden box. You instantly feel, "This is not an ordinary product."

Inside the box is a beautifully crafted pencil that exudes luxury. This is the Perfect Pencil—where extravagance meets design.

It also comes with a user manual and a sturdy fabric pouch. The pouch is thick and durable, which I personally love.

I use it all the time to protect my pencil. The Perfect Pencil consists of two main parts: the pencil and the cap.

Yes, it even has a cap! Like a fountain pen, the cap elevates the pencil to a whole new level of sophistication.

The cap also makes it highly portable. If you've ever carried pencils in a case, you know the struggle.

Graphite smears inside your case, making a mess. But with the Perfect Pencil's cap, that problem is solved beautifully.

Worried about scratching the cap? Just wrap it in the included pouch. Inside the cap, you'll find a built-in pencil sharpener.

Graf von Faber-Castell calls it a "sharpener." At the back of the pencil, there's an eraser with its own cap.

The package includes the wooden box, fabric pouch, pencil, eraser, eraser cap, the pencil cap, and sharpener.

Breaking it all down, it's surprisingly intricate for just one pencil. The pencil and eraser can also be purchased separately.

Once you've used up the pencil, you can simply buy refills. Even the erasers are sold separately, so you're covered.

For refills, you can choose classic wooden finishes like brown or black. There's also a guilloché design option available.

The guilloché pattern adds a completely different feel to the pencil. Refill pencils arrive pre-sharpened for immediate use.

However, they don't include the eraser or eraser cap. Just attach your existing eraser and cap,

pop on the pencil cap, and you're good to go. The wooden refills cost around $60 for a pack of five.

The guilloché refills are slightly cheaper—$40 for a pack of three. In other words, each refill pencil costs around $10–$15.

To sum it up, the $300 price isn't just for a single pencil. It includes the wooden case, metal cap, pencil, eraser, and eraser cap.

When you see it that way, it almost feels reasonable. Almost. After all, Graf von Faber-Castell is the luxury arm of Faber-Castell.

And Graf von Faber-Castell doesn't concern itself with affordability. This is pure luxury—a statement piece.

It's not a product you buy with your head. It's a product you buy with your heart.

That's the Perfect Pencil for you. There are many variations of the Perfect Pencil. What you see here is the Platinum model, the standard edition.

If you've used Graf von Faber-Castell fountain pens or mechanical pencils, you know the brand is renowned for its brilliant platinum plating.

The cap on this model is plated with platinum. You can choose between brown and black for the pencil's finish.

Here's the brown. And here's the black. In addition to the Platinum model, Graf occasionally releases new editions.

For instance, there's the elegant Rose Gold model—a design that's understated yet striking at the same time.

And today, I have the pinnacle of sophistication: the Black Edition. There's also the Sterling Silver model with a solid silver cap.

And recently, Graf introduced the Brown Edition. At first glance, the Brown Edition looks similar to the Rose Gold,

but it tones down the brightness and amps up the elegance. I think the rich brown color pairs perfectly with the Perfect Pencil.

I almost chose the Brown Edition, but the Black Edition kept calling to me. With the Black Edition, even the pencil is completely black.

The aura of the all-black design is truly unmatched. And next year, a new limited-edition model will arrive in Korea:

the Perfect Pencil Project Stella. Even the name is extraordinary. The design is inspired by a spaceship, with a sci-fi movie aesthetic.

Its matte silver cap features gold accents, creating a striking two-tone color combination. It's a bold departure from the usual designs.

With only 1,000 pieces available, it'll likely come with a hefty price tag. Stay tuned for more updates!

There's also a model called the Perfect Pencil Magnum. It's thicker than the standard model, with a darker and smoother lead.

While the standard Perfect Pencil has a lead equivalent to a B grade, the Magnum's lead is said to be closer to a 4B.

Now, the Perfect Pencil—what makes it so confident to call itself "Perfect"? Let's take a closer look at its design.

The brown pencil comes with a platinum-plated cap, while the black pencil has a matching black cap.

With the cap on, it measures 15.3 cm—quite long, isn't it?

When you see it in person, it feels thinner and longer than expected. Here's the Graf von Faber-Castell Classic Fountain Pen—the designs are strikingly similar.

A collaboration of wood and platinum—that's the hallmark of Graf von Faber-Castell.

The Perfect Pencil is even longer than the fountain pen, and its cap is about 1.5 cm longer.

The pencil itself is made from premium Californian cedar. With vertical grooves carved into the wood, the texture exudes a sense of refinement.

It feels like you're connecting with nature just by holding it. The Black Edition looks like this.

Of course, black isn't the natural color of wood, but the natural wood grain pattern still shines through beautifully.

The metal cap and eraser cap have a subtle glossy black finish, while the pencil itself has a matte black, almost charcoal look.

It's an elegant combination of gloss and matte, making it the pinnacle of all-black writing instruments.

The cap ring features an engraving of “Graf von Faber-Castell,” with “Germany” engraved on the opposite side.

The Black Edition, however, has “Handmade in Germany” engraved instead. The cap ring is uniquely textured, with intricate knurling like a rosette grip.

This design isn't even on their fountain pens—it's exclusive to the Perfect Pencil. The balance feels perfectly centered.

The clip is slightly shorter compared to the cap. Inside the clip is a spring, making it smooth and easy to open and close.

I was amazed at how firm yet smooth the clip feels. The clip features Graf's logo, but the logos differ slightly between models.

The Black Edition has the iconic crown logo, while the Platinum model features a more intricate logo. When zoomed in, you can see this design—it's Graf's old logo.

Personally, I prefer the current logo for its bold and intuitive look. Graf's cap-top design is distinct.

The top flares out slightly, with finely etched patterns. It resembles a crown placed on top.

The center of the cap top dips slightly inward, allowing it to stand stably even when placed upside down.

It's an elegant tool, even when inverted. If you pull on the very top, a sharpener emerges for your pencil.

By twisting the top, the cap and sharpener can be separated. You can even clean the sharpener separately.

In the Black Edition, the sharpener is also black. It's clear they've paid attention to the smallest details.

Now, let's look at the eraser cap. The eraser cap matches the overall color scheme: platinum or black.

It's engraved with "Graf von Faber-Castell Germany." The Black Edition also includes "Handmade in Germany."

Twist the cap, and the eraser slides out smoothly. The twisting action feels incredibly smooth.

It's amazing how luxurious they've made even storing the eraser. This really challenges conventional notions of pencils.

Since the eraser is detachable, you can replace it with refills when needed. Let's open the cap.

Instead of twisting, you just pull it off. Unlike fountain pens that make a click sound, this has a snug fit.

Hold it firmly and gently slide it off with a bit of pressure. The cap grips the pencil tightly, which initially worried me about scratches.

But after a month of opening and closing it repeatedly, no scratches appeared. Pretty impressive, isn't it?

If the cap stays on for a long time, it may leave a slight mark on the tip.

At first, I worried about pushing the pencil too far in and breaking the lead. However, the design prevents it from going in too deep, no matter how hard you push.

It's meticulously engineered. In the Black Edition, even the bottom of the pencil is black. It's truly all-black, from top to bottom.

Meanwhile, the Brown or Guilloché refills feature natural wood finishes. Let's give it a try.

You can attach the cap to the back of the pencil. A little push, and it fits securely in place.

It looks undeniably stylish. But I wouldn't recommend writing with the cap attached. The pencil weighs 6g, while the cap weighs 23.5g.

Attaching the cap makes it too top-heavy. It feels like the pencil is being pulled back by an invisible force.

It's uncomfortable. The cap truly shines when the pencil has worn down to a stub. At that point, you can use the cap as an extender for easier handling.

The writing experience with this pencil was incredibly satisfying. It's not a pencil with an overpowering personality, but it has solid fundamentals.

It feels firm and sturdy. The darkness is somewhere between HB and B. It's not designed for bold, dark strokes.

The smoothness is about average. It's not as buttery as a Blackwing pencil, for example.

Instead, it provides a tactile, firm, and slightly scratchy feedback. Compared to other pencils, it has a brighter, higher-pitched scratchy sound.

What I loved most was its length and how it fit perfectly in my hand. Many pencils feel overly long when new, which doesn't give a comfortable grip.

They feel unwieldy and awkward at first. But the Perfect Pencil starts at an optimal length.

It's designed to be perfectly usable right out of the box. Its metal eraser cap adds just the right balance for a comfortable feel.

Overall, it feels incredibly balanced and comfortable to write with. Of course, the shorter pencil length means it's not the most cost-efficient.

But if you're choosing the Perfect Pencil, cost efficiency isn't your main concern. So I wouldn't consider that a downside.

When the pencil wears down, you can sharpen it with the built-in sharpener. Not needing a separate sharpener is definitely a plus.

You can even use the sharpener for other pencils. At first, I worried the pencil shavings might stick and create a mess.

But the design is simple—just tap it out and wipe with a tissue. There's no leftover residue, and it stays clean with minimal effort.

When the pencil becomes a stub, you can use the cap as an extender. Once the pencil is completely used up, you can buy refills.

Let's try one of the guilloché refills. The refills come in various colors, though some are now discontinued.

Currently, Gulf Blue, India Red, and Cognac Brown are available. Attach the eraser and eraser cap to the refill,

and pop the cap on—it's ready to use. Personally, the Platinum model pairs well with any refill.

But the Black Edition has such a strong all-black aesthetic that using a different-colored refill feels a bit off at first.

For first-time Graf users, I'd recommend the Platinum model. If you already own a Graf fountain pen or mechanical pencil,

exploring the Black, Brown, or Rose Gold models might be a good choice. Also, the Perfect Pencil cap works with other pencils.

It's compatible with most standard-sized pencils. While it's expensive, the cap itself is incredibly versatile.
