On October 1st, 2006, a little show premiered that asked a simple question: what if there was a serial killer that targeted other serial killers and was masquerading as a cop? This was the thought process of James Manos Jr. and Clyde Phillips as they chose to adapt a character by novelist Jeff Lindsay about a vigilante serial killer who channels his inner demons to try to abide by a code to take other killers and monsters out. This became the cultural phenomenon known as Dexter. Fans around the world loved the misadventures of the titular serial killer as he tried to enact his own weird sense of justice while trying to convince the world around that he is a functioning member of society. 18 years since the show's premiere, this character still has yet to get a proper ending. Even though there have technically been two series finales, with a third one coming in the near future, they are doing another show that we're going to start shooting in January called Dexter Resurrection, starring Michael C. Hall. How many times does a show need to be revived before realizing that with every ending you make, the audience gets less and less interested? Each time you bring the character back. Today, we are going to look into the history of Dexter, from the humble beginnings of Season 1 in 2006 to the current day. We are not only getting a sequel series that will hopefully finally give Mr. Morgan an ending that he deserves, but also a prequel series. With this, we ask, why does Dexter refuse to go away? Dexter originally ran for eight seasons on Showtime from 2006 to 2013 and starred Michael C. Hall as the titular killer, Dexter Morgan. Dexter works for the Miami Metro homicide.

department with a colorful cast of characters, including his sister Deborah Morgan, Maria Guerra, Sergeant James Doakes, and Angel Batista, to name a few. Dexter juggles two sides of his personality, with him trying to blend in as a normal member of society, as well as upholding his code and keeping his homicidal tendencies at bay. This is why Dexter works in homicides, so he can easily cover his tracks, as well as setting up plastic wrap in kill rooms to minimize cleanup. Dexter also had a family with his girlfriend Rita and her two kids that sort of cover, even though he can never truly love her fully. Over the next couple of seasons, Dexter dealt with all of the monsters and fellow serial killers in Miami, including the Ice Truck Killer, who was his own brother, the Skinner, assistant DA Miguel Prado, and the Trinity Killer, just to name a few. [Music] Hello, Dexter Morgan. Dexter was successful due to the show running of Clyde Phillips and his masterful storytelling that engaged us all the way through the first four

seasons with a finale revealing a very promising payoff for season 5. Too bad this is where Dexter would peak, as what would follow was a turn for the worse. Surprise [ __ ] are you following me now? You better have a hell of a reason for being here. I'm looking for my sister in a cargo [Music] box. Clyde Phillips departed the show after the fourth season, and with him, the script started to decline in quality. The new showrunners decided that what made for good television was to give Dexter villains. Sure, the antagonists were present in the earlier seasons, but they played as foils to Dexter and helped further his character. But the villains in the later seasons were all gimmicky and cartoony. There were also so many weird character inconsistencies from earlier seasons, with the most egregious example in my opinion being Deborah falling in love with her brother. You accepted me being a killer. I feel like if you love me, you'll accept this. If I love you, if I love you. I went to the

church that night that you killed Travis Marshall to tell you that I'm in love with you. What the actual [ __ ] did you just say to me right now? Get out of my sight. Get out of my sight. I [ __ ] you not. This was an actual arc in one of the later seasons. This all culminates in a finale where nothing is satisfying, with Deb dying in the worst possible way and Dexter not facing any consequences for his actions. See, while Dexter was supposed to be the protagonist, he was still an awful person who did awful things, and the only conclusion to his story would be for him to answer for his crimes. Eventually, he can only get lucky and escape his fate for so long, with him escaping and faking his own death. This conclusion was not satisfying, and for the longest time, we as fans thought we wouldn't get that conclusion. That wasn't until 2021 when it was announced that Dexter would be returning as a limited miniseries called Dexter New

Blood. This was good news as not only was Michael C. Hall returning as Dexter, but season 1 through four showrunner Clyde Phillips was also returning. The miniseries is set 10 years after the season 8 finale and follows Dexter going under the alias of Jim Lindsay. He hasn't killed in over 10 years and has repressed his urges while his Dark Passenger, now in the form of Deb, tries to keep him on a good path. But that all goes to [__] when his son makes a reappearance in his life and his killing ways begin anew. This puts him in the crossfires with a new serial killer who tries to bond with his son. New Blood was really good up until its finale, with the chemistry between Dex and Harrison being well-written and new antagonist Kurt Caldwell being one of the best in the show's history. They had an amazing finale setup with Dexter finally captured and ready to face his crimes throughout nine seasons of this show. So how did they [__] it up in the final 10?

Instead, this is once again another fumbled ending where Dexter got away scot-free without paying for his crimes or facing the consequences of his actions and felt like a spit in the face after the last horrible ending. This was it. This was the new official ending to Dexter Morgan. Well, so as we have now learned, there will be a follow-up to New Blood called Dexter Resurrection, with Michael C. Hall returning once again, even though he was killed in the finale of New Blood. This makes me wonder, are they bringing it back again because they genuinely have more story to tell, or because they are trying to get back any sort of goodwill with the fans and try to give them some sort of a semblance of a conclusion? This makes me wonder, why are we even still trying to keep this franchise relevant? Is it for money? Is it for finally giving the fans that ending they deserve? Is it because Michael C. Hall loves playing this character so much and

he has a genuine passion for the world and characters of Dexter. The world will only figure out with not one but two Dexter shows coming out in the next couple of years that may finally give this franchise that is running on fumes a fitting conclusion to the story of the Bay Harbor butcher. Just like before, though, only time will tell the fate of this story. Whatever, no one left to act normal for, no need to hide who I really am. It would be freeing. Stop grinning like a [__] psycho and get back to work. Do shut your goofy ass mouth up, you annoying ass [__].
