the meeting with oneself is at first the meeting with one's own shadow. The shadow is a tight passage, a narrow door, whose painful constriction no one is spared who goes down to the deep well. But one must learn to know oneself in order to know who one is. To the extent that we're unaware, we're all limited, maybe even puppeted by repressed fears, our traumas, our biases, even our untapped potential. They're all lurking in the dark unconscious part of our psyche, influencing our thoughts and actions. This dark unconscious part of the psyche, that Carl Jung famously called The Shadow, is one of the most lasting pieces of his philosophical legacy, but it's also incredibly misunderstood and difficult to make tangible, to take real action on. Like if I told you right now, Hey, do some Shadow work, you need to do some Shadow work. Oh, what exactly do you do? It's like a riddle, it's like a Zen koan. How do you work on something or with something that you aren't conscious of? That said, it can be done, and it's

vitally important for making sense of The Human Condition knowing who you are healing uh reaching your untapped potential or as young preferred to put it reaching a kind of psychological wholeness so in this Wonder dip we're going to go deep down into the unknown dark territories of your psyche to shed light on it explore it from multiple angles and discover how we can actually work with it so first what exactly is the shadow in the abstract it's simple it's the dark part of our psyche of which we aren't aware the unknown unconscious place from which biases traumas unhealed wounds and also great potential emanate as with most of Young's musings it can be difficult to pin down an exact definition of the Shadow but this passage from the great jungian analyst Robert Johnson hits a lot of the key points and sums it up quite nicely the shadow is the sum total of all unpleasant qualities we would like to hide from ourselves and others cowardice laziness selfishness greed and so forth it represents the dark side of

the ego, the aspect of ourselves we don't want to acknowledge or confront. But when we deny the existence of the Shadow, it tends to become more powerful and take control of Our Lives. One point he doesn't exactly cover here is something I've alluded to a couple of times already: that the shadow is not all negative. This is a very important point that young often emphasized. I've even spoken with several psychologists and therapists of a Jungian persuasion that don't actually like the term Shadow very much because it is so inherently dark. But on the point of the Shadow not being entirely negative, here's a musing from psychologist James Hillman: to know one's own shadow is to be at home in the darkness of the self, which is where creativity and Hidden Treasures are stored. So what do we mean by this exactly, that not everything in the shadow is negative? Well, let's draw a mythological parallel. In the same way a hero might plunge into a dark forest and overcome the fangs and Claws of various

monsters. He may also find friends, treasures, and ultimately himself. You know, find his purpose in this darkness. Of course, theoretically, it sounds wonderful. It sounds romantic. Who wouldn't want to do this? But in reality, this is anything but practical. It requires going off life's well-worn paths, as Young puts that we instinctively resist trying the way that leads through obscurity and darkness. We wish to hear only of unequivocal results and completely forget that these results can only be brought about when we have ventured into and emerged again from the darkness. So to unpack that, this way of obscurity and darkness without sure results, this is the shadow. This is the unknown psychic territory we have to find a way to traverse if we want real growth, healing, that wholeness that Young always talks about. In this quote, Young is trying to illustrate that there is no shortcut for this, that there is no replacement for personally, perhaps painfully diving deeply into the dark parts of your own mind. So the question is, why do it? Why put ourselves through

all of this what is there waiting for us on the other side. Well, the answer is multifaceted. Yes, there is power here. And imagine being free of, or more realistically, less under the influence of all of these unseen forces in your mind. Imagine seeing through your biases, healing your weaknesses, finding hidden strengths. Imagine how it would enhance your confidence, how healing this can be. I mean, in a way, this is seeing through the Matrix, the real Matrix, the Matrix of the limitations of your mind. Doing Shadow work is an indispensable part of reaching this place of clarity. That said, the overarching goal of Shadow work is not to be conventionally successful. This is sort of the pretense or context that I've seen other YouTubers trying to shoehorn this topic into, but this is not about conventional success. In fact, this work may well lead you off the well-worn path like I alluded to before, and in the short term, that's not going to be good for your Robinhood account, as I know personally. I've heard numerous stories.

from people I know gets on the podcast stories about quitting jobs or people who greatly diverted from their careers to do serious deep internal self-work because they felt like any Hoops they were jumping through any career achievements were ultimately empty were not satisfying something deep down in their souls. In fact, I just had two highly highly decorated accomplished psychiatrists on the show, and I guess I can repeat this because he says it right in the episode. Robert Waldinger of Harvard actually became a ordained Zen roshi because all of this empirical knowledge he was accumulating just wasn't scratching that deep existential itch. It wasn't quelling that existential wriggle. So what's in it for us? I think the answer I would give, and more importantly young would give, is our souls. This is the soul discovering work of becoming who you really are, understanding who you really are, and becoming a little bit more whole. I really like how young characterizes that kind of maturation in this line from the red book. We should grow like a tree that

likewise does not know its law. We tie ourselves up with intentions, not mindful of the fact that intention is the limitation. So like a great tree, Young suspected that we all had a complex, unique, massive potential. But discovering that form requires following our own law, as he puts it, our own way, shutting out the influence from the outside world, again avoiding the well-worn path, avoiding other people's expectations of us. The first major part of achieving this Grand unique potential that all of us has is exactly what we're talking about. It is discovering and integrating the Shadow. And again, if we can move deeper into our own psyches, into those dark territories, we'll have a more complete understanding of our strengths, our biases, our weaknesses, and our limitations. You know, think of all of the unconscious patterns that were playing out. You probably catch yourself just doing something out of habituation, or you catch yourself procrastinating when there's no reason for you to do so. It's likely that all of these recursive behavior patterns are emanating from our

shadows will also be less susceptible to projecting our shadow material out onto the world, and out onto other people. Which, if you take a step back and consider how much of that is going on in the world, how much of the world's problems are directly because of this kind of Shadow projection, how much blaming, being triggered, broad brushing whole groups of people, scapegoating, this is all Shadow projection, and it's one of the deepest psychic sicknesses there is. And now that we're talking more in the macro, Young also points out that the shadow is not only a personal phenomenon, it's a collective phenomenon. So, there is a collective shadow of humanity, there's a shadow of Nations. We see the collective shadow in the shadows of Nations spilling over in the toxic discourse, in the atrocities of War. So, this concept, as with most of Young's Concepts, applies both in the individual and in the collective. And before we get into the Practical side of this Wonder dip, that is ways that you can actually do Shadow work, make this more practical.

I do think it's important to contextualize it a little bit. Shadow work is one major step on the path of what Carl Jung called individuation, this process of becoming whole that I've alluded to a few times. We definitely don't even have close to enough time to dive all the way down the rabbit hole of individuation, but just to rattle off the major steps so you understand how Shadow work fits in. This is not an exact science, and if you look up The Path of individuation, people typically break it down into four or five major stages. The first is that move from going to an only ego and Persona-based life, moving into what we're talking about here, into Shadow work, into exploring the unknown parts of your mind. The second major part is encountering and integrating the anima or the Animus, the female or masculine part of your psyche, and then symbolically an encounter with the Senex or the wise old man archetype, and eventually sort of merging it all together into this wholeness.

identifying more with what Young called the capital S self, which is more like a collective mind. So again, this theme of the micro and the macro. As with everything Young, it's heavily symbolic and archetypal, but there's also a lot of practicality, a lot of real wisdom here. The shadow in and of itself, though, is a deep, dark well with all kinds of chambers and twists and turns. And we could explore it much, much further. But I want to get to the practical side of this. I want to give you some ideas on how you can recognize your shadow and really begin to work with it so that this goes from almost mythological intangible concept to a reality, a real personal evolution. So the following comes from a cocktail of things. Things I've read from Young, things I've read from other Jungian analysts like Mary Louise Von Franz and Robert Johnson, and James Hillman podcasts. I've personally done with other psychologists and a nice little drizzle of personal experience. It's sprinkled in. Can you sprinkle a

Drizzle, that's a question for another Wonder dip. So, before we get to the specifics, the first prerequisite is really a mindset, a commitment to get curious, to get earnest about your own mind, to normalize investigating your own thoughts and behaviors. So, what this practically means is every time you feel an urge to push something down, to have an emotional outburst, to get triggered, to play out a familiar pattern that might be damaging, you have to resolve to be mindful in these moments, strive to be aware when these things happen, and try to trace these behaviors back to their root. This is by no means a simple process where you're going to figure it out on the first try, but it is a disposition that you need to have. One of the principal tools that Jung used in his analytical practice in general, but also in shadow work, is active imagination. This is a technique that involves engaging with the unconscious, trying to navigate the unconscious through the use of imagery, symbol, and visualization. So, a therapist trained in this will guide you and give you prompts.

so that the unconscious ends up expressing itself, and you're more able to catch the unconscious expressing itself in ways that you would be unable to on your own. And of course, a good therapist trained in this is also going to take you to places that are uncomfortable. They're going to encourage you to express that shadow material in a setting that's free of judgment or censorship, and this process eventually yields insight into the contents of your Shadow material. It sounds abstract and it begs the question: where does this unconscious material come from that you focus on? What are these images you focus on? Well, that brings me to my second point, my second method, which is DreamWork dream analysis. So Young and of course many therapists believe that dreams contain important information stemming from the unconscious, including information about and from the shadow. Jungian dream analysis, similar to active imagination, involves focusing in on these dream images, exploring symbols, motifs, and themes in a dream to get to the bottom of that unconscious or Shadow material.

say you have a dream with strange figures strong fear or other emotions maybe a sense of huge power that you don't normally have actually at lunch today. A friend of mine told me he used to have a recurring dream about being in what felt like a haunted place that contains some kind of dark figure in it and that was kind of a synchronicity because this is actually a classic Shadow dream. This is a classic dream that may be your Shadow trying to symbolically reach out to the conscious part of your mind but the point is in any of these examples above there's something there there's a whole reservoir of information there's a whole root system of unconscious information within and underneath that dream image and once again this segues into method number three which involves capturing this information and you do this most regularly in a journal so this method is about journaling and this includes dream journaling for sure. In fact if you're doing any kind of work with a Jungian therapist or a therapist trained in this method or you're just trying to follow

kind of the work. The methods of young in general, you're definitely going to want to keep a dream journal because you need to capture these dream images. You need to capture these transmissions from the unconscious. And when you do this, you want to do it immediately upon waking, capture it in as much detail as possible. Even small details might end up being important. But like I said, this also includes journaling in general because over time, if you make a habit of this, of just writing down thoughts, writing down feelings, you'll begin to see patterns emerge. And there's always so much wisdom in patterns. There's always an opportunity to go deeper into the mind, deeper into the unconscious through patterns that you see emerging in your behaviors and in your emotions. But again, you have to be real with yourself. You have to be uncensored with yourself. You have to be willing to go into fears, into doubt, into bias, all of these dark territories we've talked about and also positive territories if you really want journaling or this kind of self-directed.

work to lead you into the shadow genuinely. I mean, if you want to get an idea of some of this stuff, there's a lot of Young's personal writings. I mean, if you want to dive into the red book, it's highly stylized and highly romantic, but it's definitely a glimpse at how you can artfully and effectively do this kind of deep contemplative Shadow work through writing, through journaling, and through ART too. And on that note, creativity and self-expression can definitely be a tool for doing unconscious work and Shadow work as well. The next one, I guess, could be an add-on to journaling, but I think it deserves having its own spot, its own number next to it. And what I would call this technique is reverse engineering projection. So again, projection is essentially the manifestation of Shadow material, the projection of Shadow material onto other people. So this method would involve writing down or reflecting on times that people have triggered you, angered you, and trying to get back to the root of that, like I talked about before, but doing it in a

more formal way, honestly explore what it is about that person that made you angry. Three, where does that trace back? In fact, take note of all the qualities and others that you can't stand and really try to think about where that's coming from in you. The next one is meditation, and the reason I believe this is definitely effective when it comes to Shadow work is because it helps us cultivate a kind of clarity in our minds. In general, it allows us to become more attuned to our inner world so that we can get a little bit of a clearer view of the unconscious parts of the mind. And I don't think it's entirely possible to clearly view the unconscious, but even if we can gain a few percent resolution on where these things are coming from or what these pieces of Shadow material emanations from the unconscious are and how they're playing out in our conscious mind, that's incredibly valuable. And what do I mean by meditation? Obviously, meditation can take many forms, but in this example, I'm really talking about

something as simple well or as difficult as trying to honestly witness your own thoughts. Witness the activity of your own mind. You know, of course, you can focus in specifically on causes of anxiety or depression or negative feelings. You know, stuckness or again times you felt oddly strong, oddly confident, whatever it is, and eventually these will lead back to some unconscious process. Also, on a personal note, I really believe work with plant medicines, uh, visual molecules, can be incredibly important in this department as well. I mean, there's a reason the word psychedelic directly translates to mind manifesting, because that's what it does. It brings parts of your mind to the forefront that you're often not conscious of. It brings to the forefront things you want to forget about. It brings to the forefront things you regret, things you take for granted, among many, many other things. this is an exact science, and Jung himself really echoed that sentiment, there's generally no effective technique for assimilating the shadow. It is more like diplomacy or statesmanship. Also, this is not something where you're ever done. You've never fully integrated the Shadow or the unconscious, let alone completed the individuation process, but real progress can absolutely be made. Again, all this can be confusing and painful in the short term, but it is worth it. This will yield, like I said before, real growth, real healing, real power, and I think a more meaningful, full, more mysterious, more wonderful life.
