persons who divide their time between putting on lotion and putting down liquor. Whose idea of a well-spent day consists of getting up, a good sweat, and then replacing the fluid loss with plenty of drink. All the better to be absorbed on a dry stomach. Does that sound familiar to anyone? Let's dive into Seneca's thoughts on bodybuilding. It's no secret that the gym bro originated in ancient Greece. In their gymnasiums, athletes would train for war, for public games, and for the Olympics. The word gymnasium actually comes from the Greek word gymnos or naked. In Classical Greece, the male form was seen as divine, a stroke of divinity, beautiful, and it would have been a shame to cover it up. The citizens of Greece, especially the aristocracy, were physical specimens just as much as they were intellectual titans. Strength and excellence in mind and body was the standard for all good and noble men. Even Socrates, the ugliest of the lot, still fought in major battles and kept

up his physical prowess into old age. Socrates said, No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable. Now I agree with Socrates and the Greeks here. It seems we should treat the body regularly, rigorously, but also be kind to it and help usher it to its Pinnacle. That way, the body can be a good servant for the mind, for the reason, and for the heart. I think I agree with the Greek way because the Greeks were warriors, and warriors need to be rooted in Supreme physical prowess. Physical competence wasn't just the end, though. It was the aim because Excellence was their standard in all things. No sophist or teacher or philosopher on the streets would be respected if he didn't see to his physical form, and a man of arrete, a man of Excellence, was seen as the highest good. Fast forward a few hundred years to Imperial Rome, to the time and era of Seneca. Rome, especially her cities

and capital was full of soft-handed aristocrats and Merchants. Unlike Greece, the Roman Elite weren't on the front lines. Their Legions protected and expanded the Empire, their slaves did their bidding, and the upper classes had ample free time. Many of the Greek virtues and philosophies were transmitted to Rome, like stoicism, but for the most part, the mob was like any other mob - uninterested in higher thoughts and virtues. I suspect this is where the athletic and competitive gym Bros of ancient Greece became the gym rats of Rome, an Elite Class who spent their time building up and ornamenting the body. They stood up late, drank just as much as they ate (which is a considerable amount), and spent their afternoons pumping stones and chasing women. Do any of these Romans sound familiar? Let's see what Seneca has to say on the subject. So this is letter 15 in Letters from A Stoic, and there's quite a bit here on bodybuilding and some of the culture of Rome. Now I want to read a few paragraphs.

here and then go back through and pick it apart. There's some parts I agree with and some parts I don't agree with. So stay tuned for the analysis. We have a good reason to say, I trust this finds you in pursuit of wisdom. For this is precisely what is meant by good health. Without wisdom, the mind is sick, and the body itself, however physically powerful, can only have the kind of strength that is found in persons in a demented or delirious state. So without a properly attuned mind, even if the body's physically powerful, it is the same body that is found in demented or delirious people. So this sort of healthiness, this spiritual healthiness, you must make it your principal concern. You must attend to the other sort as well, but see that it takes second place. So you must attend to the other sort as well, attend to the physical health, but see that it takes second place. It won't cost you any great trouble if good health is all you want, for it is silly.

my dear Lucillius, and no way for an educated man to behave, to spend one's time exercising the biceps, broadening the neck and shoulders, and developing the lungs. Even when the extra feeding has produced gratifying results and you've put on a lot of muscle, you'll never match the strength or the weight of a prize Ox. The greater load, moreover, on the body is crushing to the spirit and renders it less active. So keep the body within bounds as much as you can and make room for the spirit. Yes and no here, you know. I think training, the broadening the neck and shoulders, developing the lungs, all those things are good. We should usher our body towards its pinnacle. But what he is saying here is like when you're overeating, when you're overfeeding, you know. And like the body's chief aim is it hurting the mental healthiness. The chief principle in Stoicism is to live in accordance with nature. Now, is it natural to be running around with 30 pounds of extra muscle or to be

bulking and overeating nature simply won't allow that you know to acquire all that food to have all that luxury to spend working out the biceps and things of that nature is completely unnatural and it's only gratifying to the to the ego into the body while it's making the the spiritual self the mental life more sluggish he goes on to say devotees a physical culture have to put up with a lot of nuisances there are the exercises in the first place the toil involved in which strains of Vitality and renders it unfit for concentration or the more demanding sorts of studies next there is the heavy feeding which dulls the mental acuteness and for me this is my least favorite part of trying to build a lot of muscle then there is the taking on as coaches of the worst brand of slave persons who divide their time between putting on lotion and putting down liquor whose idea of a well-spent day consists of getting up a good sweat and then replacing the fluid lost with plenty of

drink all the better to be absorbed on a dry stomach. Drinking and perspiring it's a life of a dyspeptic. There are short and simple exercises which will tire the body without undue delay and save what needs especially close to counting for time. There is running, swinging weights about, and jumping either high jumping or long jumping. Pick out any of these for ease and straightforwardness but whatever you do, return from the body to the mind very soon. Exercise it day and night. Only a moderate amount of work is needed for it to thrive and develop. It is a form of exercise to which cold and heat and even old age are no obstacle. Cultivating the asset which the passing of time itself improves. Cultivate an asset in which the passing of time itself improves. The thing is the body will wither, you know it's going to get old, wrinkly, it's going to have pains but what you develop in your mind, in your spirit, in your character, those things remain. The pleasures of the mind are you know remain all the way through.

old age while the body, you know, is going to start to wither. I think, in general, here, he might be putting an overemphasis on intellectualism and growing the mind. I think a lot of experience is to be gained and had through the body. I think a lot of spiritual growth can be happened through the body. If we look at martial arts, we look at yoga, I think the body is an amazing vehicle. We should keep it in prime condition, but as a vehicle to serve something higher: the mind, the will, the heart. The body is not the goal in and of itself, and this is what Seneca is saying. Now, I don't mean to knock bodybuilding or any gym Bros out there. You know, I once was a bodybuilder of sorts, and I still hit the gym every day. This channel is for warriors, and warriors should train their body to its Pinnacle, but I think the overemphasis on the physicality can get in the way of the mental, creative, and spiritual evolution. The body shouldn't be the end.

it should be trained to serve something higher, like the Perfection of the spirit, creativity, and the Warrior's Way. Thanks for watching this video. I'm Christian. This is wisdom Warriors.
