- It looks like Americans are more divided by education than ever before. Here's our latest election update. Now, as we tally the votes, we're still learning about who voted and what was on their minds from our big survey of the electorate called AP VoteCast. Voters who don't have a four-year college degree have swung significantly toward the Republican party, while those who do have a college degree have tipped a little bit more democratic. Broadly speaking, it's kind of the nation's professional class and its working class. Now, when it comes to race, though, we're less divided than before because Black voters, Latino voters, and other non-white voters seem to be tipping more toward Donald Trump and the Republican party. Democrats are still winning those groups by big majorities, but the Democratic margins really have eroded, at least in this early data. There's been a gender gap in American politics for decades:

women skew Democratic, men skew Republican. It looks like that continues, but because both men and women seem to have moved a little bit toward the Republican party, the gap in their preferences, at least as of now, doesn't look any bigger than before. These different dynamics have yet to play out, and they'll play out differently in different states. We'll just have to see which is the most powerful.
