Hello. Oh no, we have an emergency coming in. Apparently, Pedro has gotten into porcupine quills and did a pretty good

job of it. Oh goodness, no fun at all. Porcupine quills is definitely an emergency. His face is covered in them,

they're close to his eyes, they're in his mouth. We've got to get them out quick. Why are you wagging your tail, you poor

little love? I've had four or five quills stuck in my hand, and those hurt like crazy, so you can imagine what the

dog's going through. Okay, come on. I know, I know your feet are sore. We'll call him 62, even his name is

Pedro. He's 2 years old and he's a mixed breed. Oh, he's... he was just kind of

playing around in the backyard. We have a shed in the back, and he ran underneath it, and that's where he had his brawl

with the porcupine. Okay, buddy. Okay, buddy. Hang on. Let's see how fast I can pull up

sedation for you and get your pain controlled. He has a super sweet temperament; he's just a lover. It's

painful to see him like that. It's very traumatic. It's okay, love. I'm hurrying.

I'm hurrying. Seeing Pedro's face full of quills, all around his eyes, suspecting that they're all in his mouth as well,

this is going to be intense. I know. Another poke; it's really painful. Quills migrate in really difficult spots to

remove. They can lose an eye; it can be a very big deal. He just got his sedation, so hopefully he'll be quieting down

really soon and we can start pulling. It's definitely in a lot of pain. I volunteer at a rescue shelter in

southern Baja, Mexico. He was actually rescued from the landfill in southern Baja. There you go, good boy. I just fell

I'm in love with him. I brought him back and then I found him his forever home. I look in your mouth.

Color is good, that's great! I'm actually dog-sitting him now, and this happened. Poor little dude. The first things first...

is we're just kind of getting him stabilized, getting the catheter in, getting the anesthesia to a good level.

And then we're going to start pulling quills. Oh my Lord, Pedro has gotten into a porcupine!

Quills! This is going to be a while. He has quite a few in his mouth and at the edges of his throat. It's bad.

It's definitely in the top five worst ones I've seen. We're using injectable sedation because to try and put a tube

in can be tricky. I don't want to push more quills further back. We have an IV in so I can keep topping up, but you

don't want to start fighting with them when you've got a lot to do. Okay, Maya, get busy. [Music]

All right, here we go. Sorry about that, friend, but I want to get these away from your eyes before you start moving like that.

Any movement of the animal's muscles, you know, even its facial muscles, that kind of helps push that quill in deeper. They

can travel inches in a very short period of time, and you just won't find them at all. I'm going to have to give him

more... You are sneaky! How did you just suddenly get light? I'll try propofol for now, but we're

probably going to have to eventually intubate him and put... So I'm just giving him a little something to knock him

flatter. Let's start again. Oh, this one's right in the corner! Yes, you got into the really deep ones,

didn't you? The porcupine definitely won this round. Let's... Is our gas all ready to...

Go removing so many of these quills from Pedro's mouth is so painful that he's just breaking through that sedation; it's

just not enough. I'm going to give him more, and then we'll see if I can intubate him without shoving more quills

down there. I'm going to switch to a general anesthesia. I'm going to intubate him and get him on a really nice

constant, deeper plane so I can keep pulling the quills without having him feel any of the discomfort. Oh, there's two

back in his throat. But first, I want to clear his airway. Oh, that's huge! Ooh, that

was all the way in the back, back of his throat. When you get quills kind of at the back of the throat, they can migrate

into his trachea and lungs. They can migrate down his GI tract, past his tonsils. Tonsils are brutal. There we go.

Now that the airway is cleared, I need to get him on the gas anesthesia so that he is solidly down. Go night-night. Okay, you

got to really get them flat to do a good job. Okay, good-bye and good night. [Music]

All right, we're getting down to the nitty-gritty, bud. Yeah! Wow, look at that! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 for

one sale! We should make it a competition. Oh yeah, who gets the most? I tease her a little bit about who can pull the most

quills, but we both know it's most important that we get all the quills completely out quickly so that we can

wake him back up. No broken ones. Is that seven? 1, 2, 3... I think it is. That was a record of most at once! Ooh, look at

these under his tongue! Ow! How did they get under his tongue? Holy moly! I don't see anything else in there,

so I think we're pretty much done now with quills. It's usually an amazingly fast recovery; like, he'll for sure be

sore for like two or three days, but the mouth heals so fast, it's just a temporary pain.

Meds, antibiotics, soft food, and hopefully, that gives him time to think about what he did. There you go.

Buddy! Winter, winter, chicken dinner! Look at that! Look at this mat of quills that I have. That's like...

400, I think. You won! I definitely won! Tail! What a good boy! You wake up happy, like you can't

get his tongue back in his mouth, but he can wag his tail this fast. Okay, hello! Hey, buddy! This is not his first

time with a porcupine encounter; it's more like his fourth or fifth. So you'd think he would have learned to stay away

from them because he's a smart dog, but he just doesn't get the porcupine thing yet. You were really good! He's a good boy! You

were so good! You ready to go home? I hope Pedro learns, but I think really he needs to be kept on a leash, especially in

the fall when it's porcupine breeding season. There we go. I'm just glad I was here in town to help them out.
