In my life, I have had two years that I can call the best of a truly fulfilling life, and they were 2008 and 2016. In 2008, as I have mentioned occasionally, while working, I read 300 books and from the summer onwards, I wrote five days a week. My commute time was about an hour and twenty minutes in total. During that time, I spent the entire year reading The Economist on the subway, without doing anything else. In my job, I focused solely on the tasks I was responsible for.

After finishing, I had some time left. During that time, I read an incredible number of economic reports and articles throughout the year. Living like that for a year gave me tremendous momentum. Before that, I had spent almost ten years just playing games and not attending school or studying at all. So, after living that one year, working hard became my basic foundation. Despite being in a state of stagnation in college and not having accomplished much in my twenties, that one intense year created a snowball effect, allowing me to debut as a writer. I didn't have a profession as a writer or even a marriage, but more importantly, I wanted to start a business, and I was able to lay a solid foundation for that. In 2016, I wrote three books, and they turned out to be very good ones. So, how do I read them?

After nearly a year of studying perfect study methods, I was able to produce almost 1,000 pages of content. During that time, I met Dr. Shin and we started a page on Facebook called Life Study. Together, we began creating something meaningful. I made content every single day. In 2016 alone, I gave over 100 lectures. During that year, I wrote three books and met new people to explore business opportunities. All three books became bestsellers, and particularly, the book on parenting reached the comprehensive bestseller list, while Completion climbed to second place, selling over 200,000 copies. In 2016, we began to establish a foundation for helping others while also achieving success ourselves. How was this possible? It was possible because I lived by a strict plan. Up to now, I have written about twelve books. When I write a book, I adhere strictly to my plan. Personally, I really dislike breaking the deadlines promised to my publisher. In fact, I have never missed a first draft deadline. The reason I have been able to do this is that I strictly follow my plan. Because there are deadlines, I have a set amount of writing to do each day. To write smoothly, I need to prepare beforehand. So, what I need to do that day is to manage my personal life while also focusing on my writing tasks for the day.

I have to write a predetermined amount of text, and I need to prepare to write that amount the next day. To accomplish this perfectly, thorough planning is necessary. So, the night before, I set my priorities and write down my goals for the next day. When the next day comes, I wake up at 4:30 AM. When I get up to write, I start breaking down the plans I made yesterday, putting them into action one by one. If I manage to implement all my plans, I achieve the goals I set for that day. Then, I check the balance between the plan I made earlier and the execution I did today. I also review what I wrote throughout the day, providing feedback on my work. This feedback process is crucial for my writing.

When it was important for me to write my first book, the amount I could write in a day was about three A4 pages. I kept giving myself feedback on that. As I wrote one book, then two, then three, I upgraded my writing. By 2016, when I wrote books like How to Read and Parental Study, I was able to write about 18 to 20 A4 pages a day. The quality of the books I produced was certainly better than before. As I kept giving feedback on the plans I made and the processes I followed, both the quality and quantity improved. As the feedback got better, both the planning and execution quality increased. To summarize, if you live your day with a solid plan, that day becomes a perfect day. Such a perfect day can happen every day.

What can I say after two days, a month, six months, and now a year? I can say that I have lived a crazy year. If you also get to live a crazy life in a year, just like I did, I am confident that it can create a significant opportunity for you to achieve the life you desire, your future self. How can I live each day to create the life I want? How can I live each day to achieve my future self? The answer is to live with a plan. The philosophy behind this is embodied in a diary called the PDS Plan-Do Diary. The core of the PDS Diary is structured around the Plan, Daily Plan, Do, Daily Report, and Feedback. By writing a daily plan, you gain two benefits. The first is the law of action planning.

It is certainly more effective and efficient to have a plan than to not have one. However, research suggests that writing down your plans in detail significantly increases the likelihood of actually following through with them. Therefore, simply by writing your plans in the designated section of your planner, you increase the chances of executing those plans, so there’s no reason not to do it. Moreover, as you practice writing daily plans, your ability to prioritize will improve. Prioritization is extremely important in life because our time and resources are limited. The way we choose what to do first and what we consider important can greatly affect our performance in life and in business.

I realize that I’m not living as diligently as I thought, or perhaps I have more free time today than I expected. I also notice that I watch more YouTube than I thought. This gives me an objective perspective, a meta-cognition about how I am actually living my day. Why is meta-cognition important? It’s crucial to have an objective understanding of myself to know what I’m doing well and what I’m not doing well. This awareness allows me to formulate better strategies. 

While using the perfect study method and reading a lot of materials, I was very surprised to find that students who score in the top 0.1% on the college entrance exam do not necessarily have superior memory compared to regular students; rather, they have exceptional meta-cognition. These students, when taking an exam, know precisely whether they got an answer right or wrong at the moment they write it down. This clarity helps them understand what they know and what they don’t know.

Even if I spend the same amount of time studying, I don't need to spend as much time on the areas where I'm good. I can focus intensely on the areas where I'm not as strong. This is where the strategy changes; my study methods change. With higher metacognition, as my study methods improve, even if I spend the same amount of time, I become much more effective and efficient. Therefore, metacognition is just as important as prioritization in life. The key to improving my metacognition, particularly regarding how I live each day, is the daily report. The ability to prioritize that we gain from our daily plans and the metacognitive skills we gain from our daily reports are equally important in our lives. The crucial element here is feedback. So, please make a plan.

This is now feedback. I often mention that in the law of time, what’s important is not just the amount of effort, but also the quality of that effort. What does the quality of effort mean? When we put in effort, we need to do so consciously. But what is conscious effort? It is effort that involves feedback. So when I take action and make an effort, I continuously receive feedback on whether that effort is truly effective or efficient. Therefore, it is very important to receive feedback from experts when you are doing something. An expert can point out my unknown shortcomings and also highlight my strengths that I may not recognize. That’s why having a coach is important. Similarly, having a director is crucial, and having a mentor is essential. However, coaches, directors, and mentors are not always by our side. I need to be able to manage myself well.

If you receive feedback, there’s nothing better than that. Self-feedback is very important. When you can engage in self-feedback, you can make conscious efforts, and when you make conscious efforts, the quality of the efforts you put in dramatically increases. No matter how well you plan and execute, it’s not perfect, right? There’s always room for growth, and there can be better directions. When you have feedback, you can create better plans and execute them effectively. Therefore, planning is a perfect structure. It solves priority issues, enhances mental energy, and through feedback, you can establish better plans. By providing feedback on those plans, you can create even better strategies and take improved actions. If you repeat this process, you will inevitably grow.

When growth accumulates, you inevitably succeed. What is success? It is obtaining the value you desire. Growth means that if you live today better than yesterday, you will naturally become a better person day by day. As that accumulates, the probability of achieving the life you want and the values you desire increases dramatically. However, while living a crazy life for a year with a plan sounds great, you know that it's not easy in practice. It's not simple at all. Living each day perfectly according to a plan is truly challenging, especially for those who have not lived that way before. So, when I first planned the PDS diary, I had many concerns.
