So why is the government pushing against this? At first, when the exchange rate was rising, for example, in the past, if we had 10,000 won, it would be 1,300 yen. As the exchange rate rises, export competitiveness increases, and export volume increases. I had this kind of thought. But nowadays, the world has changed a lot. Now, export prices listed in dollars do not change much. As a result, while it is meaningful to bring in foreign currency by exchanging it, the era where export prices drop significantly and at the same time export volume increases, benefiting the country, like in the past, has somewhat ended. Additionally, another issue is that production bases have also moved out of our country quite a bit, but Japan is much worse off than us.

Because in the 1990s, when globalization was in full swing, we still had relatively high wages. However, Japan was already the country with the highest wages globally. However, the unusual thing these days is that U.S. presidential candidates are expressing concerns about the exchange rate. Normally, presidential candidates approaching an election tend to speak about domestic politics and policies, so why are both candidates suddenly expressing concerns about yen and yuan? This is closely related to the U.S. presidential election. For example, the date is very interesting. It started on April 23rd. Yes, it began on the 23rd. The first meeting was between the Vice President of the Liberal Democratic Party in Asoda and former President Trump. Yes, at Trump Tower. But when they met, President Biden was very aggressive. What's this all about?

I was really angry correctly. Why did he do that? On that day, Trump posted on social media, A weak yen is a disaster for the United States. He didn't just say it's bad, he said it's a disaster. Currently, President Biden, along with Treasury Secretary Yellen, seems to have a plan to inject a lot of money in the third quarter to boost the U.S. economic growth in the third and fourth quarters. Because if you look at the U.S. presidential elections, it's very interesting. For example, in November.

In the recent presidential election, if the stock prices rise over the three months, the probability of the president being re-elected is 83%. It's amazing. And if the growth rate drops and the economy falls into a recession, what is the possibility of losing? The possibility of losing is 100%. But for those who want to get involved, they need permission from us. The turmoil started because of the interview with Reuters. If you look at it this way, in the U.S., Yellen, the Secretary of the Treasury, became a figure of self-interest, and when we speculated about the situation in Japan, we confirmed that Japan would have no choice but to throw a large amount of U.S. Treasury bonds. That's how the market was shaken. But recently, looking at the actions of the Biden administration, especially regarding fiscal spending, it seems like they have no intention of reducing this debt. The debt just keeps increasing. So, if the debt keeps increasing, isn't that like digging a hole somewhere and doing business?

So, they are planning to increase the national debt again. I wonder what kind of impact this will have on the market. From my perspective, this will definitely have a significant long-term impact. The speed at which the U.S. government's debt is increasing is the fastest in U.S. history. Just a year ago, the national debt of the U.S. was only $10 trillion. Of course, this amount is enormous, but consider this - since the founding of the U.S. in 1776, the national debt had only reached $10 trillion over 230 years. However, since 2008, with the global financial crisis, the national debt has been increasing rapidly. Finally, in January of this year, for the first time in U.S. history, the national debt has exceeded $34 trillion. So, while it took 23 years to increase from $10 trillion to $34 trillion, it will only take 16 years to increase the remaining $24 trillion.

It didn't happen, and this speed is too fast. Just until September, it was $33 trillion. Yes, but it took exactly 100 days to reach $34 trillion. So, in the history of the U.S. government, debt has only increased this much three times so far. The costs of World War II were enormous, right? Our country's annual budget is 650 trillion, and we are already handling double that amount just in interest. If it continues to increase at this rate, by the 2030s or 2040s, it will truly skyrocket astronomically. There are many predictions like this, but in reality, we don't have to go that far. Situations to worry about could come by the end of next year. The interest rates are rising, and it seems that the U.S. government debt will continue to increase in the future as well. The money spent is not just spent; it will be used in U.S. Treasury bond issuances.

If we issue national bonds, the biggest buyer of these bonds was actually Japan. However, even the Japanese need to resell them instead of buying, which indicates a significant shock in the market. This is because we need to somehow keep interest rates low until the presidential election. If they decrease from the current levels, stock prices will rise, and then the re-election possibility of President Biden will increase. Currently, a tremendous amount of national bonds will be issued again in the second and third quarters. After that, they will spend the third quarter as planned for economic stimulus. Why is this? It is for the best. Nowadays, the Minister of Finance doesn't seem like the typical Minister of Finance I knew because this person is a truly excellent scholar, a real expert in the real economy, and her husband is also a famous person. Her husband is a Nobel laureate in economics. So, this couple is truly outstanding economists.

There was a part where Janet Yellen, the Secretary of the Treasury, recently did another interview. If you look at the interview article from May 1st, she talks about why there was such a fuss during the Trump administration. Yellen, the Treasury Secretary, said she was very scared at that time; democracy was under threat. For democracy to be healthy, economic growth must occur, and whoever hinders this economic growth is an enemy of democracy. She was saying that Powell is currently pursuing policies that hinder economic growth. What does this mean? They want to lower it, but the problem is that if the market interest rates go up, issuing a lot of national bonds like this doesn't mean that the base interest rate has been lowered, right? That problem arises. So, from the perspective of the finance minister, they are very anxious now, and as a result, various thoughts revealing their inner thoughts have been expressed here and there since the end of April to early May. But every time, I feel a bit sorry because when you express your inner thoughts like that, originally, in the eyes of others, speculators, hedge fund people, the moment they see the opponent's weakness, they completely seize the upper hand like in a poker game. Ellen is revealing her inner thoughts too much now, so if she's not careful, speculators in the U.S. international market, and other markets related to the yen, might, let's say, hedge funds. Hedge funds will really have the opportunity to make money.

It has increased. I look like this, but this is the United States. To be precise, if the concrete interest rate in the United States goes up, it will inevitably have a negative impact on the economy by pulling up the market interest rate. Despite knowing this obvious fact, there are certain structural reasons why we have no choice but to continue issuing debt like this. Why is that? In fact, I believe that we can sufficiently revive the economy in a healthy way without doing this as much as now. However, I am forced to do this excessively. In fact, as I mentioned earlier, there are really amazing laws in the U.S. presidential election, so if the stock market rises and the economic growth rate increases, it is almost certain for re-election. But the problem is that according to the opinion polls now, it is coming out as a tie. On average, Trump and Biden are almost neck and neck.

But the problem is if you become president based on approval ratings in the United States, President Biden doesn't need to be so impatient. The U.S. elects indirectly through the Electoral College, right? This is the crux of the problem. In the U.S., there are swing states where the voters are indecisive, not knowing where to vote. As the Biden administration continues to spend money without reducing it in the run-up to the election, won't inflation be controlled? In the past year, efforts have been made to control inflation, but when will inflation be under control? In the U.S. now, the Fed and the Treasury Department have been playing separately for about 6 months. The problem is that even if one side tightens monetary policy to control inflation, the Treasury Department keeps injecting money.

So, this could potentially stimulate inflation again. Here are two important points. The first one is, when I mentioned earlier, whether succeeding or failing in re-election in the U.S., the growth rate and stock prices are really important. It's a unique relationship. Of course, there has been no inflation in the past 40 years, so it could be possible. Anyway, since it's not related to inflation, from Yellen's perspective, inflation rising won't be a big issue for re-election. There's another thing. Usually, when they inject money into the economy through fiscal or Fed policies, there's a lag before inflation spikes in the real economy. Normally, it takes around 6 to 12 months.
