When designing, what’s important to me is that I have been practicing creating designs with a somewhat fantasy-oriented and sophisticated style recently. However, regardless of whether I’m designing fantasy characters or sci-fi characters, the key thought process in my mind always revolves around whether I can imagine a scene when I look at the character. I focus on how this character would fight, how they would eat, and how they would make an entrance. I like to have these thoughts in mind as I begin my designs. I hope that these elements can serve as a kick in my designs. I always emphasize this aspect of my design process, and if I were to highlight something important, it would be this concept of kick. What does this kick mean?

Casual art has become quite abundant, and there are really many characters that are both numerous and charming. So, in the end, if you simply reference those characters, it might not be too difficult to draw them reasonably well. As long as you reference them well. However, we don't want to draw generic characters. Ultimately, when we design characters, it's relatively easy to receive reactions through fan art, but drawing original characters and sharing them is about wanting to leave a memory. Therefore, it would be nice if there were elements that could leave a mark in people's memories. In the case of these characters, rather than specifically adding such elements, I focused on elevating the details and style of the design through training. These friends also have their own settings.

In this case, the character is a Viking. Vikings are usually depicted with thick beards and have that kind of rugged masculine image. However, I thought it would be interesting to imagine a character who, despite being older, doesn't have a beard and has a bit of a complex about it. I worked on the design with the concept of him on the left. There's a setting where he has captured a giant, so I was thinking about how to present that in an interesting way. I imagined a spear design on the left that would have metallic elements floating around and would be able to change size freely. Typically, when facing smaller enemies, the spear would be compact and small, but when facing a giant, the spear would expand and be filled with lightning in the center.

I imagined that it would be really cool if the characters became significantly larger. Ultimately, when these characters appear in the story or during battles, I like to envision how they would be portrayed. I think it would be great if that imagination could be expressed in the artwork. I believe that this adds to the charm of the characters. The character in between was based on Hoo-in, as he has an image reminiscent of Odin's direct subordinate. If you look at the weapon set, this character is also holding an axe and a spear, similar to the other character who also wields a spear and an axe. I thought it would be fun if their motions were somewhat aligned, but the effects could differ, with one character having much larger effects while the other has smaller ones. I worked with Hoo-in as the concept. In terms of silhouette training, it's referred to as silhouette drawing.

Practicing in this way is very effective. It’s about expanding sketches like this. There’s no method as effective as that. In fact, for those working on the original art where silhouettes are approached more importantly, they tend to engage in these kinds of training quite often. When it comes to silhouette design, it literally means designing only the silhouette. This is a practice that can be done repeatedly. During this process, it's important to constantly think about the feeling of the silhouette you want to emphasize. For example, if you want to create a somewhat blocky and angular feel, similar to the image from the poem that Odin knows, you might design it in a squared-off way. In contrast, this one flows with curves and has a smooth feeling, while the lower part is designed to be thicker, giving it a more calm and stable appearance.

I hope to convey a shared feeling. I didn’t want it to appear too high-level, so I intentionally condensed it, creating some fluctuations. I also wanted to give it a smooth feel, which is why you can see many sharp silhouettes used throughout. I believe it would be most effective if you practiced the silhouette drawing a few times while thinking about the impression of the silhouette you want to capture. Thank you all for your hard work.
