Uh, Feynman once said that physics is like sex, sometimes something useful comes from it, but it's not why we do it. And uh, but it's brilliant, so there is a big insight there. This is, it's not that art is useless, it's just

the utility of art is completely orthogonal to why you do it. So uh, the meaning of the art is really not to help the living, if you'd like to help the living, right? But it's uh, so it's a very nice side effect, but uh

what we want to do with the art is to capture what it's like. We want to capture a conscious state, that's the actual meaning of it. And in some sense, philosophy is at the root of all this. I think it's reflected in the vein of

one of the founding myths of our civilization, the Tower of Babel. This is the attempt to build this cathedral, and it's not a material building because it's meant to reach the heavens, right? Which are not real, they're not in this world. It's uh

it's a metaphysical building that is being built. This is this giant machine that is meant to understand reality. And you get to this machine, this true squad, this thing that under tries to understand what's going on by using people that work like ants and

contribute to this. And it's not about your ego, it's not about the gratification that you get from people for contributing to it. It's not uh, for this thing that doesn't care about you, it doesn't give meaning to your life, it doesn't reward you for your

insecurities in the toil of your existence right it's it's really just a machine it's a computer and as we would say now it's an AI it's a system that is able to make sense of the world and people at some point had to give up

on this it fell apart because they were no longer able to speak the same language so the different parts stopped fitting together just became so large and so many people had to work in specialized directions that they could no longer synchronize their languages and that's why they gave

up on it and then this big accident happened in the Roman Empire where they could not fix the incentives for governance similar ways as we fail here right our government has to play a much shorter game than civilization does and this leads to bad results for civilization

and the Romans decided to fix this by turning the society into a cult and burned down our epistemology and killed people that were overly rational and insisted that people talking to burning bushes on lonely mountains don't have a case in

determining the origin of the universe so right this one had to give and uh the cultists won and we still have to recover from that so in a way the beginnings of the cathedral of um understanding the universe that had been built by the Greeks and by the Romans

had been burned down by the Catholics and then later rebuilt but mostly in the likeness because they didn't get the foundations right that left scars in our epistemology that have not healed even though we have a pretty successful culture that incorporated most of the other libraries

and burned down the rest. Right, we are the ones that are left over in this planet, in a way. In our libraries, we can read everything that there is to read at the moment. We just often cannot translate it.

The Purpose of Art and its Relation to Utility

Feynman's analogy of physics and sex: usefulness is a byproduct, not the primary motivation.

Art's utility is separate from its purpose; its meaning lies in capturing conscious states.

Philosophy is fundamental to art and the pursuit of understanding.

The Tower of Babel as a Metaphor for Understanding Reality

The Tower of Babel represents a metaphysical building, an attempt to understand reality.

It's a collaborative effort, a machine (like AI) to make sense of the world, irrespective of individual ego or reward.

The project's failure stemmed from the inability to maintain a common language and synchronize efforts.

The Fall of the Roman Empire and its Impact on Epistemology

The Roman Empire's collapse resulted from flawed governance incentives.

The Romans' solution involved creating a cult, suppressing rationality, and rejecting alternative perspectives.

This resulted in the destruction of existing knowledge and a setback for the pursuit of understanding.

Rebuilding and the Present State of Knowledge

The Greco-Roman pursuit of understanding was damaged by the rise of Catholicism.

Subsequent rebuilding efforts left lasting scars on our epistemology.

Despite progress, challenges remain in accessing and interpreting existing knowledge.
