Using English Discoveries Program: Logging in and Navigating Lessons

English Discoveries requires teacher-provided site, username, and password for login and usage.

### Using English Discoveries Program for Language Learning
* 🔐 To use the program, you need the **site, username, and password** provided by your teacher. The site usually starts with "**http://**", followed by a specific address.

today, I'm going to take you through English discoveries and show you how to log in and how to use the program. In order to use the program, your teacher must provide you with three bits of information: one is the site, two is the username, and three is the password. Now, the username and password I have question marks here, you will actually have your own username and password. Everyone at your school will have the same site and you see it starts off with HTTP colon two slashes CDE and GD is com and then you're going to have something else that comes after that. So that will be information that you will get from your teacher. I'm going to close this and I'm going to now log into the programs. I can either use Google Chrome or Firefox with a windows-based program or if I'm using a Mac, I can use Safari, Firefox, or Google Chrome. You can also access the program on a smartphone or a tablet. You will need to put in the site. There is not an app so you will need to

put in the site the same as I'm going to do it on the computer. So I'm going to use Firefox. Now I'm going to click on Firefox, and I'm going to enter the name of the site. And you want to put the information about the site not in the Google search or any type of search. You need to put it up top here in the URL. So I'm going to type in HTTP colon, which are the two gots two slashes EG&G e is calm slash. And I'm putting my company site key e CH n o TMS. You're going to put your site. You're not going to put technic EMS. And then I'm just going to hit enter on my keyboard, and it should take me to the site. Now you notice that it says oops. And if it says oops, that means I typed in something incorrect. So I need to go back and make sure I type it correctly. Then you see the first time when I typed it, I didn't put an e D in front of

TechKnow TMS. So, we couldn't find the site. Now that I put it in correctly, it takes me to my site. Once I'm at the site, I have the option of putting in my username and password. So, I'm going to put in the username I created as a student. And it is not what we call case sensitive. So, it doesn't matter if I put in uppercase letters, lowercase doesn't matter. And then I'm going to put in my password, click on login, and it brings me into the program. Now, the first time you go into the program, and I'm going to go up here and click this person, and you see it has my profile, study planner, log out. If I set the profile, you see that I can choose a support language. And with the support language, I have it set for Spanish right now. With low support, I could change it to a different language just by clicking on it. Then I scroll down and click on update, and it will be updated to French now. And it lets me know that it's been updated. Now, your teacher might set the

language for you so that you will not have to do that. I'm going to set it back to Spanish, and this time, instead of low support, I could change it to English only, which means I would not get any support. Where I could change it to full support, and I'll get explanations, or I'll get help in my native language. Again, I have to scroll down and click on update. Once it's updated, you see the message that time was in Spanish because I had it for full support. Now I'm going to close it. You have another option here, which is this question mark for help, and you see when I click on it now, instead of saying help, it says they you, and we have different things. I'm going to click the tour, and I now have a tour of the program, and it is in Spanish because I have it in full support. If I had it in low support, it would be in English. The first time this comes up, you have to click just click on continue, continue, continue, continue. Now I'm not

reading it because I'm going to show you how to use the program. But if you needed to, then you could read. And then I'm going to close it. And I'm back. If the tour comes up and you want to stop it, you just click on the X. And we're back. Now I'm going to go back because I want to use the program in low support. So I'm going to just change this to low support right now. Remember, we have to update it. And then I'm going to click OK. So I've changed it to Spanish and to low support. It takes me to the first level, which is first discoveries because I have not worked in the program before. So it will always take you back to where you left off. Your teacher will assign different levels for you to work in. There's first discoveries, basic one, basic two, basic three, intermediate one, and the immunity to intermediate three, and advanced one, two, and three. And to get to the different levels, I just click on this little arrow. And you see, it takes me to the levels to go the other

way to go back I would just click the arrow on the left, and it's taking me back. Now we really should start with first discoveries, but I'm going to use basic one today, and you always want to start with the first level or work whatever is assigned to. I'm going to click start, and it will put me into the program. Now, this is a listening activity, and I can listen to it just by clicking on this button. If I want some help, you see it says see text, so before I do that, I could click on it. Now I can see the picture or a video, and then I can follow along with the text. I'm going to click on it. Now we'll listen to a little bit of it. This is Bill Winter talking to you for radio station WNYC in New York City. If I want to stop it, I can just click on it, and it stops. If I want to start again, I click on it. Tonight is rock-and-roll night at the Apollo Theater. I can also choose a particular line that I want to

listen to so I could click on. Can you see Lyndon and you see I have some options. I can hear just that part. Oh, can you see Linda and I can do that as many times as I want. Oh, can you see Linda. The other thing that I did or another thing that I can do is I can see the translation when I click on that. I see it in Spanish because that's the support language that I said. I can close it by clicking on the X and then I can practice recording myself. When I get this message, I want to share selected device and with Firefox, you see a picture comes up at the top. Little microphone now the top one lets me hear it. Oh, can you see Linda. I want to hear it again. Oh, can you see Linda. And now I'm going to try to say it myself and I won't say anything until it tells me to speak. You'll see there's a message here. It says speech. So I'm going to click the button. Who can you see Linda? Now you notice I didn't click.

on the button to stop it. It will stop automatically. It shows me the word in red that I need to work on, and whatever I said that's in green, it's telling me it's pretty good, and I can listen to it. Oh, can you see Linda, and you see by clicking on the button, I can hear it go. Can you see Linda? Now I'm going to try it a couple more times and see if I can get a better score. This is a raw score. If you want a percent, normally add about 20 points to it. So these new words between 71 and 86, I'm going to try again. Who can you see Linda? They didn't like that one as much. Let me try again. Who can you see Linda? Who can you see Linda? Who can you see Linda? I should have stopped when I had two three marks, and I can listen to any of these. What can you see Linda? Who can you see Linda? Okay, and then if I like a particular one, I can click on it. There's a dot, and then I can send it to

the teacher so my teacher will get a copy of my excellent work. Once I'm finished, I click the X to close it. So I have multiple options here, several things that I can do. One, I can just play it all the way through. Oh, can you see Linda? Bill, I see the work. Star, Maxie. Or I can click on a particular line and just hear that part. Yes, I can, Bill. Or I can see the translation and I can record myself. Now, when you are in the Explorer part, if there is a word that you don't know, you see that we already have clicked on a line to see the translation so that it will help me. But also, if I don't know a word, I can just right-click on it and a dictionary. When I say right-click, that means the button on my mouse, the right button. Just click on that and the dictionary opens up. I set it to Spanish, which you could choose a different language if you have a different support language. And then you get that word in English and you also get it in your native language.

I click on radio, and now I have the word the radio in Spanish or some, and it will help me with any words that I don't want. You can see that down at algo. I think those oakiness, and then I can close up the dictionary. Now I need to go over this so that I understand all of the vocabulary, not some of it, but all of it. Welcome, times students will go right away to the practice or to the test, and there's vocabulary that they don't understand, and then they're not able to get the practice questions correct or the test questions correct. So make sure that you spend the time that is needed so that you understand everything that is on this page. Then we go to practice, and there are different types of practice questions. If I want to go back to Explorer, I can just click on the one, and it takes me back, or click on the practice. It will

take me to the practice. I can also click on the scroll to see the text so that I can follow along. You see, I have to scroll down as I'm using. Now, there are different types of questions here. I have to complete this. It says, Listen to the radio broadcast and then match each person with a description. So, who is Maxie? And Maxie is a rock star. Now we're going to put that over there. Now, I have several options down here at the bottom. I can click on the check to check my answer, and I see that I was correct. Before I continue, I have to click on check again. Who is Rocky? If I don't know, I can even click on see answer. It will show me the answers. Then I can clear it by clicking on this button and try it on my own. Now, you won't be able to do that on the test, but in the practice, you can. So, I'm just going to go through this. Maxie is a rock star. Rocky is a friend of Max's. Then the chávez's of reporter.

and the winner is the announcer. And then I'm going to check it and I had all of them correct. I'm going to do all of the activities. You see, this was the first of six down at the bottom. So I'm going to go to number two. Listen to the radio show and answer the questions. But we've already listened to it. But if I need to go back, then I can go back. What is happening at the Apollo Theater? There's a rock and roll concert there tonight. Maxie and Rocky are singing. Bill Winter is performing. Well, there's a rock and roll concert at the Apollo tonight. It's rock and roll night at the Apollo Theater. Okay. And what does Linda want to do? When you scroll down so that I can see everything. She wants to go to the theater with Maxie. She wants to sell Maxie a ticket to the concert. She wants to ask Maxie questions. And she wants, or she wants to sing with Maxie. By the way, remember, if you don't know a word, you could just right click.

on it, and that dictionary will open up, and you can get help with a particular word. Well, she wants to ask Maxie some questions, so we're going to click on that. Then we're going to check our answers. I see that one is correct, and let me check this one. Now, that one is correct. So I've answered these questions. Now I'm going to click Next. Here, I have to indicate which questions are true or which comments are true and which are false. Linda can see Bill. I'm going to say that's false because he's in the radio at the radio station. She's at the concert. Maxie and Rocky are friends. Like, she was there with her friend Rocky. This radio program is for people who like music, well, rock and roll. Linda is talking to Bill. That is true. If I want to change it, I can move it back. Linda wants to ask Rocky some questions. I can put that there. Linda is busy. That's not true. Bill Winter is at the Apollo Theater. That's not true. Maxie knows Linda. That's true.

I want to quick check my answers and they were correct. Now I'm ready to go to the next one. Choose the correct answer. Maxie is a man, woman, we don't know. Well, I think it used the word she, if I'm not mistaken. Says Maxie is walking into the, who do you see? Now let's see. I want to see that one. She's with her friend Matt Ravi. So she, Maxie, she said she's a woman. We're gonna click that and we're gonna check our answers. Don't hesitate to go back and check yourself as you're going through this. We have to match. Can you

Now I'm going to miss one of the questions to show you one of the features. So WNYC radio station is in. We're going to say New York, so we're going to put it on the

line, and I'm going to go to the next one. Not going to submit it until we complete all them. Linda Chavez is a reporter. You see there's no check button in this because this is a test. Maxie is a reporter. That's wall. She's a rock star. This probe radio program is about rock music, movie stars, jazz mood music. We're going to say rock music, and then we'll get this one wrong. Where is Bill winner? He's at home. When I say he's at home, okay. And then I'm going to submit it. And after I submitted it, it gives me a score. And that score goes into my folder where my teacher can see my score. Your teacher can also see when you logged on, how much time you spend in the program, and what you did in the program. These are correct. This one's wrong. If I want to see what's wrong, I can click on it, and it shows me that I chose at home. I selected at home. That's your answer, okay? That's what I answer. And if I want to see what the correct answer is, I can

just flip on correct answer and it will show me what the correct answer this. So I have just well-well work through rather the explore the practice and the test. I'm ready to click on next and you see it takes me to the next activity unit 1 meter rock star meet me also explore practice and test and we would work through that the same way. Now if I want to see how I'm doing I can click on this little arrow and it has a list of the different units in basic one and you notice this one is filled in and it says it's completed because I did everything. If the answer is correct I checked my work so it says now I'm ready to work on MeetMe. To close this I'm just going to click on it and I'm going to continue. If I've had enough for one day I've worked enough for one day then I can click on logout but before we log out you can also do some of the same things that you did before you can click on a line

you can hear the part, or you can see the translation. You can also see the main idea by clicking on this. Just lets you see some key words. And if you are hooked up to a printer, you could click out and click and print out this selection. As before, you have the practice, and you have the test. I'm not going to do those right now. We're going to get set it back to explore, and I'm going to log out by clicking one picture. The person logout, and now I am out of the program back to the login screen. When I log in the next time, it will take me back to where I left them. This should help you get started using English discoveries. Thank you very much.
