그러니까 그래서 지금 사람들이 되게 재밌어하는 거 같아요.

[음악] 일단 뉴욕은 어떤 성향의 사람이 살면

좋을 것 같다고 저는 생각하냐면, 개인적인 의견은

진짜 큰일 해보고 싶은 사람에게 맞는

것 같아요. 그러니까 뭔가 안락한 삶이나

삶의 편안함을 추구하는 사람은 안 맞는다.

뉴욕은 뭐 가면은 뭐 잘 아시겠지만,

지하철도 엄청 시끄럽고 지저분하고, 비

오면 그냥 녹물 뚝뚝 떨어지잖아요.

그냥 위에서 아직도 그런가요? 그럼요. 안 바뀌었어요. 왜 안 고칠까?

그렇게 부유한 도시가 왜 그걸 안 고칠까요?

그러게 말입니다. 아직도 지하철 다니고 있고 똑같아요. 그리고 뭐 워낙 아파트들도

엄청 좁고 비싸고 저는 제가 뉴욕에 처음에 다닐 때

기숙사 생활하는 게 지긋지긋해서

아파트 가격을 좀 알아보러 다녔는데

말도 안 되게 비싸죠. 그 당시에 1990년대, 2000년대 초반에 우리가

지금 촬영하고 있는 정도, 한 8평 정도 되는 그런 아파트를

한 200만 원을 달라 그랬었어요. 우리나라 돈으로. 그래서

엄청 비싸다 생각을 했는데, 한 5년

전에, 그 팬데믹 터지기 직전에 뉴욕에 있는 친구한테

야, 그때 우리 학생인데 그때 200만 원 달라 그래 가지고

스튜디오, 당황스러웠던 기억 나냐? 그랬더니 그 친구는

이제 뉴욕에 계속 살고 있으니까 좋을

때였지. 지금은 얼마나 그 정도면 지금

200만 원 내려고 그러면 그거 룸메이트 세 명이랑 나눠 써야 된다고

이렇게 얘기를 할 정도라서 집값도 정말 살인적이고. 그래서 전에 어떤

친구가 얘기해 줬는데, 뉴욕에 이렇게

돈은 말이 있어요. 다른 도시에서 일반적인 중산층이 누리는 삶의 질을

뉴욕에서 누리려면 얼마를 벌어야 되느냐?

재밌는 통계다. 35만 달러를 벌어야

돼요. 그러니까 그 시트콤 <프렌즈> 같은 게

얼마나 사기인지가 거기에 나오는 친구들 정도의 수입을 가진 친구들한테는

집을 빌려주지도 않겠죠. 일단 거기

20대 후반에 뭐 금융권 이런 친구들은 아니니까 그런

친구들은 입주 심사에서 아마 다 떨어지지 않을까요?

입주 심사에서. 하긴 뭐 그 드라마에도 보면은 할머니가 할아버지가 쓰던

아파트를 물려받은 걸로 나오긴 하는데,

사실 되게 엄청 좋은 거잖아요. 투 베드룸

아파트가. 근데 그 무명의 배우가 산다는 건

말이 안 되는 거고. 그래서 이제 저희가 뉴욕에 있을 때 가장

인기 있던, 뉴욕에 관해서. 하지만 뉴욕에 사는 사람들이 가장 싫어하는

드라마가 섹스 앤 더 시티였어요. 글을 쓰는 사람이 저걸 살 수가

없다. 그리고 만약에 글을 쓰는 사람이

그런 아파트에 살고 있다면, 이것은 이제 1대 어머니, 아버지가 대대로

뉴욕에 살던 사람이어서 월세를 올리는 게 이제 한정되어 있기

때문에 뉴욕은 월세 계약을 안 끊고

그냥 부모 이름으로 계약되는 걸 계속 물려받아 쓰면 그런 아파트에 살

수 있을지도 모르나, 뉴욕에서 그런 아파트에 살면서 관리비

내고 어쩌고 쇼핑은 한 번도 못 간다. 그럼에도

젊은 야망을 가진 친구들이 뉴욕에

가는 이유가 뭘까를 생각해 봤어요.

나는 왜 갔나라고 생각해 보면, 뉴욕에서 성공하면 세계 탑이 되기

때문에 그렇죠. 예를 들어서 파리에서 어떤 사람이 굉장히 성공을 했어요.

그럼 그 사람은 유럽 탑이잖아요. 그리고

서울에서 성공을 했어요. 그럼 이제 요즘은 케이팝도 있고 그래서 많이

좋아졌지만, 전통적으로는 서울에서 성공을

했다. 그러면 코리아 탑이잖아요. 근데 뉴욕은, 뉴욕에서 성공을 하면은

자연스럽게 뉴욕이 가진 그 도시의

영향력 때문에 세계 1등이 된다. 뭐

예를 들어서, 뭐 제가 그때 한참 뉴욕에 있을 때 인기 있던

마크 제이콥스라든지 뭐 이런 디자이너들

뉴욕을 사로잡으니까 바로 뭐 전 세계

사람들이 뉴욕의 트렌드가 뭔지 귀를

기울이고 있으니까 자연스럽게 한국에도

입점이 되고, 일본에도 입점이 되고, 중국에도 입점되고, 유럽에도 입점되고,

아마 그래서 세계 탑에 도전을 해보고

싶은 사람은 거기 이제 그 목표에 포커스가 있기 때문에, 그 뭐

지하철에 쥐가 돌아다니고, 자기가 번 돈의 50%를 월세로 내던 그

사람들한테는 그게 중요한 게 아닌 거 같아요. 미래를 위한 투자지요.

근데 이제 그런 야망을 가진 것보다는

약간 나는 워크라이프 밸런스도 추구하고 뭐

가족과 함께 정원이 있는 집에서 여유롭게 살고 싶은 분들은

절대로 가면 안 되는 도시가 뉴욕입니다.

뉴욕을 싫어해서 요즘 다른 곳으로 많이들 가시더라고요.

오스틴 쪽이 요즘 엄청 핫하다면서요?

[음악] 집값도 되게 싸고 IT 기업들이 직원들을 보내는 이유가

연봉을 70%만 줘도 거기서 살 수 있기 때문이래요.

월급을 적게 줘도 다들 가서 좋아한다고 하더라고요. 워라밸을 중요시하는 세대가 미국에서도 늘면서

대도시들이 공동화되고 있다는 얘기도 많이 있더라고요. 생각보다 뉴욕이 예전에는

모두 벌집처럼 모여서 새벽 2시까지 바글바글했는데,

워라밸을 추구하는 직원들은 굳이 거기 살려고 하지 않으니까요.

요즘은 리모트 워킹도 많이 가능하고요.

보니까 생각보다 새벽 1시 이럴 때

나가면 좀 옛날보다 많이 썰렁하다는

얘기도 들었었는데, 코로나가 풀린 지

몇 년 안 돼 가지고 이거 한번 봐야 돼요. 한 3, 4년 지난 다음에도 계속

그런지 글쎄요. 다시 올 거 같긴 해요. 왜냐면

뉴욕의 역사를 보면은 올라갔다 내려갔다를 몇 번 했는데도 아직도

살아 있으니까 저도 궁금한 게, 보스턴은 어떤 사람들이

가면 좋을 것 같아요. 보스턴은 일단 거기는 학교가

대부분이잖아요. 대부분 다 학교기 때문에 저도 사실은 보스턴에서 직장

생활을 안 해보고 학생으로만 있었기 때문에

학생으로서는 살기 최고의 도시인 것 같아요. 다 학생 위주로 되게 다 모든 게 학생

위주로 돼 있고, 일단 학생들이 제일 주요 소비자이기 때문에

학생들한테 되게 나이스하게 돼 있어요. 어느
