There are five mindsets that make it possible or impossible to save 200 million won. Does this mindset really change? When we make any investment, whether it’s stock investment or savings, we need to establish our mindset from the very beginning. When you set your mindset to save 100 million won, the first important mindset is this: there are two types of people in this world. Think carefully about which type you belong to. The two types of people are: one type saves money and then spends the leftover, while the other type spends first and saves whatever is left. These are the two types of people.

That's all. So, I started working in the late 90s, and I mentioned that I entered the company at the same time as Chairman Jung Young-jin. I received a monthly salary of 1,550,000 won. After deducting my savings, I ended up with 1,550,000 won. I can't remember what my original salary was, but anyway, after deducting my savings, I received 1,550,000 won, and I saved 1,240,000 won. So, I saved 1,240,000 won and had 310,000 won left. Now, what is 310,000 won worth in today's money? I don't know for sure, but I think it might be around 700,000 won. So, I tried spending 700,000 won, and after spending 310,000 won, I had 1,240,000 won left, which made me think I could save that amount. So, I just aimed for about 80% of my income, and since I had 310,000 won left, I thought I could manage with that. At that time, if I was living with my parents, it wouldn't have worked out since I was living on my own.

Living alone is tough. No matter how much you say it was the 90s, a time without smartphones and the internet, I think it was possible for me because even though my family was poor, I could go to work while eating the meals my mom prepared for me. I wanted to try saving 80%, so I started with that and saved the rest. So, the first mindset you need to have is the pre-saving mindset. What you are doing now is more of a post-saving mindset. You spend first and then think about how to save what's left. Of course, what I'm saying about the 90s is very different from now. Back then, capitalism and marketing weren't as aggressive and fierce as they are today. In those days, there were no smartphones or the internet, and I even remember my brother-in-law driving a really old, clunky car.

I was given one, but I couldn't take it with me. The reason I couldn't take it with me is that there was no navigation, and without a map, I simply couldn't figure out the way. So, I just remember leaving it parked all the time. I could use a payphone to make calls, right? There were no smartphones, no internet, no navigation, no delivery services, and no courier services. And believe it or not, there were no Saturdays off; I had to go out every week. I didn't have time to spend money on Saturdays, and on Sundays, I would just collapse and sleep. Back then, corporate culture was different; you all know how fortunate you are now. Back then, we would drink together and keep downing drinks. I didn't have to pay for drinks because the company usually covered it, right? I didn’t buy meals with my own money, nor did I pay for drinks. And even on Saturdays, I had to go to work.

And back then, you just had to collapse and sleep; there was no time for drinking. Honestly, those in their mid to late 40s now would probably know this. At that time, in the Samsung Group, you had to wear a suit from Cheil Industries. But you can't really tell if it's from Cheil Industries just by looking at it. Still, there was this unspoken rule that you had to wear a suit from Cheil Industries. The Cheil Industries suit was the most expensive. I saw that my friends also found it expensive, and even now, it’s still pricey. You had to buy a new one every season, so aside from that, there wasn’t much else to spend on. 

I have a question, teacher. So now that you’ve had your latte, from the perspective of the MG generation watching this, we have to pay for the internet and communication fees, and we have Instagram and travel expenses. Back then, you said you saved 80%, but things are so different now, right?

So, when I say 80%, I don’t mean that literally. Wages have increased significantly since then, of course, considering inflation, so it’s a bit confusing to determine how much actual purchasing power has risen. Nevertheless, income has greatly increased compared to back then, but the fixed costs that need to be covered, meaning the basic living expenses I mentioned earlier, have also increased a lot. I acknowledge that. 

So, how much should I save? I want to say this: first, half of the salary earned in your 20s and 30s is not actually yours. What I mean by that is that the salary isn’t entirely yours because, as I mentioned before, the salary is a supply. It’s not completely yours because, as you pointed out, in five years, ten years, or even twenty years…

Since we have to share it, technically, half of it is not mine. However, for those who have come up from the provinces to Seoul and are paying monthly rent, I can empathize with the theoretical basis you're talking about. But when you're earning 3 million or 3.5 million won and still can't make ends meet, how can you possibly live in Seoul? As I mentioned, since half of it is not mine, at least 30 to 40% should be saved. If that 30 to 40% isn't even saved and everything is spent, then, as I mentioned earlier, self-esteem can only hit rock bottom. When we interview young people, especially employees, the reason their frustration and depression increase isn't just because they want things but can't have them or want to spend but can't. It's a fundamental issue.

The reason is this: in 5 or 10 years, nothing will change. It’s the frustration from these thoughts. It leads to a sense of despair. So, even if I save 30 to 40% of my income, at first, that money seems insignificant, but after a little while, that volume grows. Of course, investing is necessary, and when it goes well, it feels great. But when it doesn’t, it’s frustrating. However, savings are predictable to a certain extent. If I save, I think, “Wait a minute, if I keep this up, by March next year, I might have over 30 million won.” Oh, thank you! Then, if this trend continues, by the end of next year, I could imagine having over 45 million won. This might seem like a small amount to others, but it’s a sustainable approach for me.

There are certain expectations regarding growth. First, there should be a mindset of saving in advance, and second, there should be a mindset of increasing savings. So, what does increasing savings mean? Let's say you are currently saving 1.23 million won, and it's really tough. However, after one year, that amount becomes a substantial sum. When you reach the next year, you might think, Since I saved 1.23 million won last year, it was tough, so this year I'll just save 1 million won to reward myself for last year's efforts. 

But think about it: when you are lifting weights, for example, if someone has perfectly mastered the form for a 50 kg bench press, would they suddenly decide to just lift 40 kg next month? No, they wouldn't. If they can handle 50 kg well, they would aim for 60 kg next, focusing on improving their performance.

Let's give it a try. This is possible, right? Just like we have a PT, we should also increase our savings, even if it's not a lot. We need to aim for an increase of about 5% to 10%. If I managed to save 1.23 million won this year, let's try to increase it by 100,000 won next year. My salary might go up, right? That's one factor. Additionally, we need to reflect inflation in our savings mindset. We should increase our savings to account for inflation. 

Thirdly, I hope more people will engage in long-term savings. What I mean by this is that many people keep putting money into parking accounts or CMA accounts, thinking they can take it out when needed. However, the mindset should be that once you save around 500,000 won, you shouldn't touch it. Therefore, we need to cultivate a mindset for long-term savings and a mindset for enforced savings.

It should be there, not forcibly. What does the mindset of a candidate mean? So, what this means is, when we save money, there are times when we feel like we need to reward ourselves for the hard work we’ve put in. I mentioned this before when I talked about success. If we just focus on saving a specific amount, like 20 million won or 30 million won, we can end up feeling disheartened. That's why I always say, create a savings plan where 5% of the amount saved is a reward for yourself. For example, if you save 10 million won over a year, you would have saved about 818,000 won each month. After all that hard work, it’s reasonable to spend about 500,000 won on something nice for yourself. Is that okay to spend? Yes, that’s fine. Instead of just focusing on saving 10 million won by saving 818,000 won, you could save 850,000 won to reach 15 million won, reinvest the 10 million won, and then use 500,000 won to treat yourself and feel good.

It's about feeling good, like how that person who won the lottery used to feel. You know, there’s that kind of mindset. You should design the rewards you give yourself well and incorporate them. This is the mindset you need to have. 

Now, what’s the fifth mindset? The fifth mindset is having clear goals. Yes, clear goals. You should write down your vivid goals somewhere, like on your KakaoTalk profile or in front of your desk. It needs to be something that stands out clearly. You should write it down like that. If you feel embarrassed about it, there's no need to be. Just put it somewhere you can see it, like on your KakaoTalk profile, or if you’re worried about others seeing it, you can use numbers that only you understand. For example, “I will save 100 million won by a certain date.” Why?

When I was in high school, there was this thing where I would say, I will go to a certain school, and I will score a certain number of points. I had a senior in high school who was very specific about his goals. He said that by his twenties, he would have saved up 100 million won. He was just a high school student, so I thought, What’s up with that person? But it’s true that the more specific you are, the better it is. What I'm talking about here is the mindset. Before saving money or investing, we need to have the right mindset. When we think about investing, it’s not just about starting with a goal for returns or how much we will cut losses; rather, we need to establish how much we will invest, what our target return will be, and under what circumstances we will cut losses. Just like that, we need to have a similar mindset for saving. So, first, we need to set our mindset.

되어야 한다, 그죠? 무작정 축하하라고 하거나, 뭐 30만 원으로 시작하라고, 95만 원으로 시작하라고 이렇게 덮어놓고 저축을 시작하는 것은 물론 좋지만, 마인드를 딱 세팅해야 한다는 거죠. 선생님, 질문이 있습니다. 그런데 이걸 보다가, 예를 들어서 대표님 같은 경우는 그래도 옛날이긴 하지만, 월급이 얼마였죠? 155만 원이라고 말씀해 주셨는데, 삼성 그룹 계열사에서 일했던 분들은 나는 지금 월급이 200만 원밖에 안 되는데, 어느 세월에 1억을 모으라고 하는 거냐? 대기업에 다니는 사람과 나는 좀 다르다. 소득이 낮아도, 월급이 적어도, 한 30년 걸리는 거 아닙니까? 그렇죠? 이제 만약에 그 월급으로만 계속 있다면, 사실 정말 어렵죠. 그런데

So, I actually received such a question on-site. They asked, How can I make 100 million won when I only earn 2.5 million won a month? When I hear this, I can only respond in one way. Yes, earning 2.5 million won is fundamentally different from someone earning 3.5 million or 4.5 million won trying to make 100 million won. Before discussing the methodology, I need to change the mindset of the person asking the question. While I can't change their salary, if they earn 2.5 million won, they should feel even more compelled to save 100 million won. Instead of saying, How can I make 100 million won with a salary of 2.5 million won? it's important to shift the conversation. The mindset should be that since they earn 2.5 million won, they should work even harder to achieve 100 million won. If someone were to earn, say, 10 million won a month, I wouldn't tell them to focus on making 100 million won, as they would likely have enough left over after their expenses.

In a few years, I need to earn an additional 10 million won on top of the 2.5 million won. So what I want to say is that many young people are doing gigs these days. I was surprised to see that there are quite a few who earn around 4 to 5 hundred thousand won. It's interesting because earning that much at a young age seems fine, but I see people trying to do things like translation work or online commerce, or trying to manage an Airbnb. Their salaries aren’t particularly low, but they don’t want to settle for 2 to 3 hundred thousand won. Why is that? It’s because they feel pressured to meet friends and maintain a certain lifestyle, and earning 2 to 3 hundred thousand won makes that difficult. The very idea of earning that amount puts a strain on them. I remember this from school days as well.

The grades are a bit ambiguous, but if it's a middle level, then the teacher calls that friend over and says, Hey, you have to go to a university in Seoul, right? If that friend gets motivated, they might think, Yeah, let's do it. However, as we go down to middle school, it becomes easier to give up. I remember back in the second year of high school, our math teacher came in for supplementary classes. We had all paid for those classes, but there were about 50 or 60 students in the class. When the teacher spoke, they would say, Those who aren't going to study, don't disturb others; just lie down and sleep. It doesn't matter if you've paid, just lie down. Suddenly, half of the class would be asleep. But if you look closely, there are always those who sleep comfortably, thinking, Whatever, while there are others who lie down but get up after about 10 minutes. They're anxious; it's the anxiety that makes them uneasy. So, this is...

Should I sleep or study? What I'm saying is that if you're going to study, you should really focus on it, and if you're not going to, then just sleep comfortably. The issue is that there are people who worry a lot but aren't studying hard, which is a kind of polarization. As I mentioned earlier, when I see people who have side jobs, I think, Oh, a lot of people are doing side jobs these days. I'm not saying that everyone should definitely take on side jobs to make money. I've never had a side job myself. What I mean is that it's not about earning money from a side job and then saving that money. Rather, it's about how your attitude towards money changes when you take on a side job. This means that when you experience having a side job, you realize how difficult it is to earn money, which makes you more mindful about spending it.

To prevent you from screaming, I'm advising you to refrain from doing so. If you go out and work part-time at a café for about two hours, that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. It just shows how difficult it is to earn money. Helping someone in that way is acceptable; I'm not criticizing that. I mentioned this to encourage you to develop a proper mindset about money. Some people might think I'm suggesting something illegal, but that's not the case. 

First of all, a wealthy person is someone who has a well-established mindset about money, and that is how they earn substantial amounts of it. It's not just about beginner's luck, like making an investment and thinking, Oh, this investment is no big deal. In fact, that kind of mindset can often become an obstacle to their future success. Of course, this is a reality.

There are certainly realistic limitations to the problems we face. In a way, some might say that having a low salary makes it impossible or very difficult to save 100 million won. It's not that this is a defensive mechanism, but starting with a protective mindset is not present. In some ways, those individuals are indeed struggling more; they really are. For those whose monthly income is only around 200 to 300 thousand won, their mental burden is the heaviest. 

When they come home, they think, I’ve worked so hard for such a low wage, and if only the salary were higher, at least I would feel better. But that's not the case, which makes them feel exhausted. They often say they need to reward themselves, and as a result, they keep ordering spicy rice cakes and mala soup, leading to weight gain and other issues. At 10 PM, they’re on their phones... So, I believe...

We need to change our mindset a bit. No one who has saved 100 million won has instantly turned it into 1 billion won, but everyone who has turned 1 billion won into 10 billion won has started by saving 100 million won. I hope you remember this. So, does having 100 million won solve everything? Well, it's not that simple. Just like the saying that early risers are successful, it's not necessarily true, but successful people tend to wake up early. This is a very basic concept. If you don't have the right mindset to save even 100 million won through your economic activities, I believe it's difficult to succeed just by investing. The path of investment is not short; it is very long. Therefore, you need to have the right mindset in place. Is there anything like that? For example, when saving 100 million won...

If it takes about 50 years, then the answer won't come out. However, for my young generation, it would be better to gather it in a few years. Of course, the sooner, the better. The third launch has succeeded, and the satellite is currently orbiting the Earth. The reason the previous two Nuri launches failed a bit was that the initial speed was not sufficient. At the beginning, the speed needs to be fast enough to break the sound barrier within 100 seconds after launch. If the initial speed is secured, it can place that heavy metal mass into orbit beyond the atmosphere at a weightless state, 1,000 kilometers out. When I say that it might take 10 or 20 years to gather 100 million won, that person will likely spend it all on bags and changing cars before they gather the money. What I mean is that as a civil servant and a newcomer to society, my salary is just too low.

Then, if you want to earn at least 300 to 350 or more, you need to accumulate 100 million won within five years. This is the lap time I am asking you to achieve. What does that mean? In long-distance running, there are certain segments you need to surpass within a specific time to achieve a record. This is what we refer to as lap time. In other words, if you are engaging in economic activities, you must accumulate 100 million won within seven years. If your salary is at least 300 to 350 or more, you must accumulate 100 million won within five years. If you don't have that speed, then you can see why the Nuri rocket experienced its first and second failures. It was because it didn’t gain the necessary speed in the early stages, which prevented it from reaching orbit. You see, if I were to say that I could make that amount with a salary of around 500,000 to 600,000 won over ten years, that would be fine. But if there is no speed, then that money...

Before reaching 100 million, whether it's changing to the iPhone 16 or getting a bag, everything will disappear. So, speed is important; it needs to happen early on. What I’m saying is that if you’re making money, you should aim to save 100 million within seven years through your own efforts. This is what I wanted to convey.
