This video shows an advertisement agency that included an environmental protection message by featuring a polar bear as a model. However, there have been comments on YouTube claiming that instead of being endangered, the polar bear population is actually increasing. So, what is going on? 

To summarize, the increase in the polar bear population can be attributed to the effects of a hunting ban and the fact that the area of sea ice has not significantly decreased over the past 20 years. The melting of ice in the Arctic region has actually activated the food pyramid, which has helped the bears. This is interpreted as a result of various factors, including the adaptation of polar bears to the changed environment. From discussions with other experts on polar bears, I have heard that the population is indeed increasing due to climate changes.

I think the intention was to lead the narrative in a way that they can't ask questions. The most fundamental reason is that the Arctic crisis narrative originated from poaching. Back in the mid-20th century, it was common for poachers to hunt polar bears indiscriminately to showcase their skills. Therefore, the countries adjacent to the Arctic signed the Arctic Protection Agreement in 1973, which prohibited poaching. From that point, the polar bear population began to rebound significantly. Despite the increase in polar bear numbers, this agreement has been maintained, albeit with some modifications in 2009, because a new issue emerged: global warming. By the early 2000s, a rapid decline in Arctic sea ice was observed, and computer modeling reflecting this trend predicted that polar bears would face significant threats to their survival.

According to this, despite the increase in polar bears, the narrative of the polar bear crisis has been maintained. Based on the predictions at that time, the number of polar bears should have decreased to around 7,500 by now. However, the results we have examined so far are, strictly speaking, the exact opposite of those predictions. Last year, a report published by the UK environmental organization, the Global Warming Policy Foundation, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Arctic Protection Agreement, indicated that the population of polar bears was about 12,000 in the late 1960s, and as of last year, it is estimated to be around 32,000. This means that the population has nearly tripled over the past 60 years. One of the reasons analyzed in the report is that the changes in the Arctic have not been as detrimental to polar bears as previously thought. Arctic ice, or sea ice, has indeed been significantly affected by global warming; from 1979 to the 2000s, the area of Arctic sea ice has decreased by nearly half due to the impact of global warming.

The area of ice has decreased, but most of the reduction corresponds to summer sea ice. Since 2007, a similar area has been maintained. Nevertheless, overall, the sea ice area has shrunk, and its thickness has also become thinner. Interestingly, this has been analyzed as having a favorable effect on polar bears. As the thickness of summer sea ice has decreased, an environment conducive to the reproduction of phytoplankton has been created beneath it. With the increase in plankton, the base of the food pyramid has become richer, and naturally, the seals, which are the main prey of the top predator, the polar bear, have also increased along with nearby fish. The productivity itself is significantly high, providing a food source for them. When taking partial photographs of polar bears, we can assess their physiological condition by measuring their body circumference.

The health condition of polar bears has been quite good. There is a thought that polar bears, in any case, are at their best. Additionally, scholars have analyzed that polar bears are adapting to the changed environment to some extent. A study published in 2021 analyzed the feces of polar bears residing in Norway's Svalbard archipelago and found that reindeer constituted about 27% of their diet. Normally, polar bears would hunt on the winter sea ice and sustain themselves with the nutrients they acquired to endure the summer on land. However, as the duration of their stay on land has increased compared to the past, it indicates that they have started to search for new prey for nutritional supplementation. Recently, there have been frequent reports of polar bears coming down to villages and causing damage. While polar bears do attack people, the reasons behind this behavior are interpreted in various ways. On one hand, it is attributed to the impact of climate change.

Some argue that the disappearance of poaching has increased the proportion of adult polar bears in the population, and this has led to younger bears being pushed out or venturing into human areas. In places like Alaska, there have been reports of polar bears appearing significantly more during the winter and spring, which raises concerns. They tend to rummage through trash cans and consume a lot of carcasses, suggesting they have found a new way of life. However, despite the immediate increase in numbers, there are still claims that a crisis will soon arise. This contrasts with the previous narrative that highlighted images of emaciated polar bears wandering sadly, attributing it all to climate change. It is now crucial to observe the Arctic ecosystem from a more nuanced perspective.
