I am Gamja, and today I want to talk about the growing rift between my very close friends, OpenAI and Microsoft. It seems like they might end up parting ways. I'm going to discuss the phrase yesterday's comrades, today's enemies. 

First of all, something feels off. Anyone interested in artificial intelligence knows that OpenAI and Microsoft have had a very close relationship for a long time. Even when early investors in OpenAI started to leave, Microsoft consistently supported them both financially and in other ways. Of course, it wasn't just out of goodwill that Microsoft was generous; they also became a leading company in the industry through OpenAI's latest AI model, GPT-4. This success was a result of the strong collaboration between OpenAI and Microsoft. However, recently, things have started to change.

There are uncomfortable issues arising between the two companies. The first is the relationship between OpenAI and Apple. Many people were concerned about this when the recent search GPT was announced, wondering if their relationship might be a cause for concern. 

If we look at the history of their partnership, Microsoft made a large-scale investment of $13 billion starting in 2019. Through Microsoft's Azure services, OpenAI was able to operate and develop stable services. Conversely, Microsoft had to use only Azure to install OpenAI, and they actively applied the OpenAI GPT model to their own services. This synergy worked very well, allowing OpenAI to lead the artificial intelligence market to this day. If Microsoft hadn't had the financial resources during this process, it wouldn't have been easy. 

However, Microsoft mentioned OpenAI in their annual report...

I included the phrase AI competitor. Through the partnership with Apple, it created a situation that puts pressure on Microsoft. In fact, OpenAI is even offering its services for free through Apple. So, Microsoft has invested the most money, and it feels a bit unfair. However, what's more important is that OpenAI has started to develop its own search function. Originally, there were web browsing features through Microsoft's Bing, and various tasks were based on that, which also led to an increase in Bing's market share. There was also the notion that as OpenAI services grow, the usage of Bing would increase. But now, with the announcement of Search GPT, people are saying they will no longer use Chat GPT or Bing and will instead use Search GPT, impacting Bing's market.

I think the market share may not decrease. Another aspect to consider is that search fundamentally involves thinking about search advertising. Currently, through Search GPT, we are contemplating another swing model, which is OpenAI. There was a moment when the partnership with Apple was strained, but now it's reached a point where we think, This is just a joke, regarding Search GPT. Of course, it’s complicated because we have been investing and developing technology for such a long time, so parting ways immediately is difficult. From OpenAI's perspective and Microsoft's perspective, both are very important partners. However, since they have different thoughts, it seems that the business direction will also change. Currently, Microsoft has an open-source AI called Fire, and it looks like they will develop their own model in this manner, and OpenAI may also proceed without relying on Microsoft for funding or server support.

I think we should consider various ways to be self-sufficient. In my view, ultimately, everyone will have to find their own way to survive. Looking at Microsoft's side, it seems they will intensify the development of their own models. They are currently using GPT-4, but I believe they are working hard to replace it with their proprietary model, which is called Copilot, to further strengthen their branded services. Additionally, there are currently various models available in the cloud, but there seems to be a strong inclination to support OpenAI. In this situation, I think other models will also be integrated and well-supported, just like OpenAI. Lastly, there is a strategy to expand partnerships and collaborations with other companies. We should take a look at OpenAI; it will be necessary to find new partners beyond Microsoft and Apple, receive investments, and combine services.

What’s more important is that we need to expand our revenue sources. Currently, the biggest revenue source for OpenAI is probably the revenue from ChatGPT Plus and the API usage fees. Therefore, it seems crucial to create a business model that can generate revenue without external investment, including Search GPT. Lastly, strengthening our independence is necessary so that we can operate our services well without relying on Microsoft. I think we need various strategies for this. So far, this has all been my speculation, but it definitely seems that the honeymoon period between Microsoft and OpenAI is over, and I wonder if they will start competing for their respective shares.
