### Understanding Vocabulary Through Context Clues
* 📖 Today, we are focusing on vocabulary words from chapter five and how to determine their meanings using **context clues** found in the story.
* 🔍 As we explore words like **"Renegade,"** **"corners,"** and **"undulating,"** we will look at the sentences they appear in to deduce their meanings.
* 📝 It's important to note that vocabulary words may have **multiple meanings**, so reading the surrounding text is **crucial for understanding**.
* 📚 Students are encouraged to **write down any additional unfamiliar words** they encounter while reading and to **share their findings later**.

Okay, we're going to continue with Es are rising. If you guys could first take out your vocabulary page, we're going to go over some of the vocabulary words from chapter five that maybe might be a little bit something you don't understand. I have a few that I out that we're going to write down. We're to to find them right now, but I want you guys to look for them in the story and see if you can figure out what they might mean by using the story. And what's that called when we use the story to figure out what a word might mean? Evan context clue, our context clues, because our vocabulary words or any word really might have multiple meanings. So if we go through the story, we see a word that we say, I'm not sure what that one means. If we read the sentence that is a part of or the paragraph is a part of, we can use the context clues to figure out what that word means. So we're going to just write down some vocabulary and

then also if you guys see a word that I did not put on here, write it down yourself, and then we can define it or look through the book and see if we can figure out what they need. So, the first one I want us to write down is Renegade. Renegade. It's a baseball team, a professional baseball team. Oh, so when you go through the story, go ahead and read the sentence and see if we can figure out what Renegade is. Whata, okay. The next one, corners, for another way to figure out words. Somebody said Renegade sounds familiar. Maybe we can look at how it's spelled or what other words are spelled that way too, and maybe there's similarities that we can figure out what they mean. The next, oh, we're not looking for the book right now. I'm just going to do the vocabulary, and then when you read, you're going to find the vocabulary words and see if you can figure out what they mean just from the context. The third one is viewing.

So, when you're reading the story, I'd like for you to find those keywords, and when you do find them, pause for a moment, read the sentence, read the paragraph that it's in, and see if just from those context clues you can find what that word means. Sometimes, that's all we need. Whatap chapter five. So, now that we've looked through theab, they're also up here. The words are up here. When you see a word that you're quite not quite sure what it means, write it down, and then we're going to share what we find after we're done. So she is leaving her home that she has known forever and going to the

United States, so she's leaving her home, everything she's ever known, leaving her papa, his whole business, and they're moving to a country that they have no idea what's going to happen on. I'm sure that will come up at some point, but since they've lived in Mexico for their whole life, they have only spoken what language? Spanish. So maybe they might know a few words in what language do we speak in the United States? Typically English. They may know a few words, but they've been in another country their whole life, so we'll probably learn about that in as we read. That might be something we gr. Um, okay, leave to the US. page we're looking at one of our vocabulary words from chapter one, and this is how we're going to use our context clues. How we're using our context clue. Okay, we are looking at the word English at the beginning of the chapter when Esperanza wakes up next to her mother. It takes her a few moments to realize her father had died. Then the author writes, Her smile faded, her chest tightened, and a heavy blanket of anguish smothered her smallest joy. From that sentence, looking at our context clues, knowing what's happening, what does the word anguish mean in the sentence? Exhaustion, extreme sadness, death, or a birthday celebration? Extreme sentence. And did you know that? So how did you figure out the meaning of the word anguish? So by knowing that her father died, her smile faded, and a heavy blanket of anguish smothered her smallest joy. So if her joy is being smothered, she's probably not feeling happy. Yeah, you're getting rid of it. Yeah, you're getting rid of it. Um

ay oh did you have [Music] for you that she L her father a lot, and it would be really sad if her yes. So, go ahead and write down how you figured out the meaning of the word English. Just do a small meaning for it, okay? Something along those lines in the sentence. Her smile faded and knew she was probably sad. She wasn't smiling, okay? This will be up here. You guys can continue to work number three. Which sentence most correctly uses the word anguish? So, we know the word anguish means what? Sad. So, when we look at these sentences. A. The woman felt anguish after completing the long right. B. The anguish she felt after her brother was seriously injured caused her to not smile all day. Context clue right there. When his friend got a new car for his birthday, he didn't. He felt extreme anguish toward his friend. The anguish shown by his dad caused the young boy to feel much better about going to school. So, that one's probably not it because you know anguish means that so.

which one do you think better fits the definition? Why? Why do you know you're not the right answer? You're probably not going to be sad for your friend, right? There's probably, yes, maybe jealousy or maybe another word like that. So you're right by knowing what it means by using context because we know C and D are not right. So which one?
