now the building was built here in the 1950s, but originally this was the formal area where children, if you could imagine, when central park opens up in 1858, there are no playgrounds in all of central park, there are no playgrounds here in central park. So if you can imagine this mound of rock here had handholds in it and whatnot, and this mound of rock was called kid mountain, and we could imagine, I just let your kids climb all over this. This was a formal play area here, yes. This is a chess and checkers house. This is called the chess and checkers house, built on the former site of kid mountain. Yeah, low-class Christine, low-class. That's where sailing village was, Seneca village, one of the largest free African-American villages in the country, one of the first, and actually, it's also one of the first places where you really get an integrated society. First three African Americans begin moving up there when the lots become ready for sale, and then eventually some German and Irish families move uptown. So, it's kind of amazing when you look at the town records. They were doing some research about the town and how they lived. They noticed that a lot of the town, they went to each other's weddings, they went to each other's birthday parties and christenings. So, it was very much an integrated community, which is quite, quite amazing for 1825. This ice makes it so hard to walk around. Good to see a knot today. Welcome. How many miles will I walk so

Columbus, we're here in the southern end of the mall, the only straight pathway here in the mall as they get more, more, more, more, more, uh, you know, my hair is wet anyway. Ah, this is Columbus. This is literary walk here, the southern end of the mall, and across the way over there, that's William Shakespeare. But now let's, uh, let's go over here to the mall. There is ice everywhere in here, wow. This is really treacherous here today. I gotta really be careful walk in here, and here it is, ladies and gentlemen. I wish I had, I should have wore ice grips, Maurice. I should have wore ice grips. Usually, Central Park is a little bit better than this, but welcome to the only straight pathway.

in all of central park. This is the mall. A lot of the trees around here were original to the park. They were planted here between 1855 and 1856. This is one of the largest groves of great American elm trees outside of Washington, D.C. In this grove alone, there's almost 400 great American elm trees. But throughout all of central park, you can find close to 3,000 great American elm trees. As you see, even in the wintertime, they make this beautiful canopy of limbs and branches. It's quite beautiful. Yeah, they didn't salt down enough of the pathways here. They should have salted down the pathways a little bit better here. They didn't do a really good job today assaulting down the pathways. But now let's make our way up the mall. So this, when the park first opens up, nearly 50% of all park users have a private carriage. Who has a private carriage in the 1860s? Well, the top 5% earners. So for the first 10 years, the park was

Maybe about five percent of the maintenance of this park is paid from taxes. So, and I know they haven't fired anyone as a conservancy. It is beautiful. It is beautiful, but it's really treacherous. There he moved in in 1997. They removed his nest. Some 300,000 New Yorkers signed a petition to put the net 24 hours a day in front of that apartment building, and now the nest is backing out of that first nesting pair of red-tailed hawks. And uh, yep, they put the nest back, and now that first nesting pair of red-tailed hawks, there are now 33 nesting red-tailed hawks here in Central Park, probably more now, but kind of amazing. The red-tailed hawks seem to know their real estate because you could most, you could find most red-tailed hawks

here along Fifth Avenue, kind of amazing, and now amazingly enough, we're getting American bald eagles here in the New York tri-state area, which is ridiculous. There was a sighting of an American bald eagle not that far from here at around 79th Street and Hudson River Park, so it's kind of amazing how the bird life is adapting to the city.
