One of the interesting things about this topic is that most of us know only one fact about this part of the nervous system: The limbic system is related to emotions. In a moment, we will see if we can change that. In this video, we will learn more about this important part of the nervous system, including its anatomy, organization, components, and the functions of those components. The limbic system is a set of anatomical structures located in the brain. To simplify it, we can divide it into two components: one cortical and the other subcortical. Let's start with the cortical component. It is formed by several regions of the cerebral cortex, as its name suggests. The first is the frontobasal region, which is this area on the inferior surface of each frontal lobe. This region is related to the interpretation of smells and also to the formation of memories. Have you noticed how some smells bring back distant memories? That's the work of your limbic system! The next region is the insular cortex, which is that area on the surface of the insula, a deep lobe of the brain that hides beneath the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes, and is involved in cravings and addictions. The next is the cingulate gyrus. This structure is perhaps the part of

Its function is to connect the hippocampus with the cerebral cortex. Now let’s move on to the subcortical component of the limbic system. As its name indicates, it is related to the sense of smell. The olfactory bulb receives nerve signals from the olfactory nerve and transmits them to different parts of the cerebral cortex, mainly to the frontobasal region. It is interesting to put this information into perspective to understand how all the structures of the limbic system interact with each other to form emotions. Olfactory signals coming from the nasal cavity are received by the olfactory bulb, which transmits them to other areas of the limbic system, such as the frontobasal cortex and the amygdala. The amygdala, which we talked about recently, is involved in sensations of fear and anxiety. It has connections with the hippocampus, which is related to memory. The limbic system is the interaction between all these structures and allows, for example, a smell to trigger the memory of unpleasant situations that generate a feeling of fear or anxiety.
