Hello everyone, this is Totti. To all the fan divers out there, I have a question for those who own an action camera: which brand are you using? It seems that GoPro is the most popular choice, with an overwhelming majority using it. I have a sense that over 90% of divers are using GoPro. Today, we are going to talk about the absolute champion, GoPro, and its new product, the GoPro 1. We will also look at the rising contender, the DJI Osmo Action series, specifically the Osmo Action 5 and Pro, both of which are newly released products. 

For a long time, the era of GoPro has continued, but recently, the situation has changed a bit. I’ve been able to use various cameras, and I must say that DJI is quite impressive. So today, we will compare these latest models against each other and see if DJI can challenge the absolute champion, the GoPro 5 Pro.

By the way, I would like to explain a thorough comparison for the fall of 2024. Now, I plan to watch a lot of comparison videos together. First of all, I am a diving YouTuber, so this comparison is specifically focused on diving. Therefore, I won't be introducing features that cannot be used for diving today. Instead, I want to convey the realistic ways you would use these features underwater, highlighting the differences. 

Now, to start with, I believe the most concerning aspect for everyone is the representation of colors. After all, color is the most important thing when it comes to cameras. Today, I would like to take a close look at this aspect. I will divide the comparisons into four depth levels: 3 meters, 8 meters, and 20 meters. 

First, at a depth of 3 meters, there isn't much change in color; I think both are exceptionally beautiful. As expected, at shallow depths...

The absorption rate of light is still low, so the color expression is relatively simple, falling into a blue range. However, when both are used, there isn’t much difference. Now, let's compare at a depth of 8 meters. If you look at the color of the rocks on the seafloor, I think the differences will be quite noticeable. The GoPro 30 appears a bit greenish, while the Osmo Action 5 Pro shows a really beautiful red color. Here, the differences are quite clear. It seems that the GoPro has a green filter applied, and it doesn’t fully eliminate the green tint. This also affects the color of the orange fish swimming together; the GoPro captures the orange beautifully, but it seems a bit muted. On the other hand, the Osmo Action 5 Pro displays the orange color very vividly.

This is beautiful. It really comes down to how much color cast can be removed, and I feel that the OSM Action 5 Pro comes out on top in this regard. The GoPro 13 has some issues with green cast that haven't been fully addressed. It's beautiful, isn't it? Now, I would like to move on to footage taken at a depth of 20 meters. How does that look? If you look at the colors of the water, it's immediately obvious. I think everyone is starting to understand how to assess white balance through my explanation. If you look at the colors, you can really see the differences. The person with the white fins appears a bit greenish in the GoPro footage. Next, we're going to 30 meters. You can tell the difference right away. The way the yellow fins look also changes significantly. The GoPro 1 has a stronger green filter applied, and it hasn't fully removed the green cast, while the OSM Action 5...

The Pro version is incredible, right? When it can express these colors at depths of 20 to 30 meters, it's something that action cameras of the past couldn't have achieved. It's hard to believe that just a while ago, such beautiful expressions were unimaginable. However, with advancements in technology, it has become possible to produce such vibrant colors even at a depth of 30 meters. 

Furthermore, the footage you just saw was captured under excellent conditions. The visibility was exceptionally clear, and the sea was blue. Next, I want to show you footage from a day with terrible conditions. The water was very murky, and the weather was absolutely awful; it was pouring rain that day. I would like you to compare the two videos at a depth of 20 meters. As the environment becomes more challenging, it becomes increasingly difficult to fine-tune the white balance to just the right setting. This is where a significant difference becomes evident. 

Take a look; it's completely different, right?

Action 5 Pro is already too beautiful. The color of the water appears quite dull, but it is still expressed in a solid blue. As for the GoPro 1, it seems almost like it is no longer the sea of Miyajima; it has turned much greener than what you would see with the naked eye. The difference is significant. Next, we are comparing it with a white 35. White balance refers to the expression of colors, specifically how accurately white can be represented, which is why it is called white balance. In the case of GoPro 1, the 35 appears somewhat greenish. Now, look at the Osmo Action 5 Pro; it has a slight blue tint, but the expression is very natural. Consequently, the colors of the fish are also depicted naturally. Look closely; in the case of GoPro 1, the fish appear greenish as well. Despite the murky conditions and cloudy sky, the underwater scene is adjusted to produce such beautiful white balance, which is truly impressive. Next, we will compare the angles of view.

The aspect ratio, simply put, refers to how wide a scene can be captured. The sense of action is enhanced by capturing landscapes, so the wider the shot, the easier it is to feel the immediacy and depth of the moment. Therefore, width is essential. The question is, how much width is available? Officially, it has been announced that the GoPro Hero 30 can shoot at an angle of 151 degrees, while the OSMO Action 5 Pro can capture at 155 degrees. This means that the OSMO Action 5 Pro can capture a wider angle by 4 degrees. The reason for this advantage is that the sensor size of the OSMO Action 5 Pro is larger. Now, let’s take a look at the actual footage together. In the center, there’s something that looks like a rice ball. This is the large 35, and we can use this 35 as a reference point.

I would like to take a look together at how wide of a view we can capture. From what I can see now, the GoPro 1 seems to make this rice ball look a bit smaller, doesn't it? Let's continue to look ahead. It really does seem like the GoPro 1 captures a smaller image. You might think that since it's capturing a smaller image, it must be capturing a wider view, and I thought the same when I was using it. However, after comparing them closely, I discovered something interesting that I want to share. The GoPro 1 really does make the rice ball look smaller, doesn't it? 

Now, from this point, the pointed part on the left edge of the 35 is adjusted to stick right to the left edge of the screen. So if you look at the right edge, you can quickly see how wide it is capturing. But look here, there's some white haze, right? In the case of the GoPro 1, that haze is mostly cut off, and only a little bit is visible.

しかし、分かるようにオズモアクションのファイルの方がやっぱり少し取れているというところですね。そしてさらに、皆さんに朗報があります。このアクションカメラ用のフィッシュアイレンズがありますよね。今までGoProにしか付けられなかったんですよ。ただ、AOIというメーカーからDJIオズモアクション用のアタッチメントと、インスタ360のAS Proのものもそうなんですけれども、どちらもこれが使えるようになると、やっぱりオズモアクション5とかの方が綺麗なんだけど、結局このレンズを付けるとめちゃめちゃよく撮れるから、GoProを使えますと思っていた方も結構多いと思うんですけれども、なんとOSMOアクション5 Proもこれが使えちゃいます。はい、ということで、さらに綺麗な描写ができるようになりました。本当にAOIさん、ありがとうございます。僕も早速注文して、製品が入荷次第届くようになっていますので、皆さんもチェックしてみてください。

Next, I would like to compare the aspects that are significantly related to depiction, specifically focusing on low-light performance and dynamic range. Low-light performance refers to how well a camera can capture images in dark conditions. On the other hand, dynamic range refers to the ability of a camera to represent the entire range of brightness, from the brightest highlights to the darkest shadows, in a wide and clear manner. Bright areas are prone to overexposure, while dark areas can easily lose detail, leading to what is known as blown highlights and crushed blacks. When either of these occurs, the image is considered to be compromised. Therefore, the dynamic range is about how well a camera can manage to capture details without losing information in these extremes. Let’s take a closer look at this aspect together. 

The GoPro shows significant black clipping. At the bright exit of the cave, the GoPro has a bright spot that is just shy of being overexposed. In contrast, the Action 5 Pro manages to depict details more effectively.

I think it's working. Please take a look at the performance on the screen. On the right side, the GoPro 3 is completely blacked out. The Osmo Action 5 Pro is just shy of being blacked out. Now, looking further to the right, the GoPro 1 is indeed blacked out. We are going to point the camera into an even harsher environment. Look at this; the Osmo Action 5 is doing quite well even in a very dark area. Now, take a look here. This situation has a significant contrast between bright and dark areas. If you check the bright area of the GoPro 13, it's very overexposed. If you look at it up close, you can see that the diver is in the frame, but the outlines are blurred, and it's really overexposed. Now, let's take a look at the Osmo Action 5 Pro. What do you think? Isn't it amazing? The level of detail is completely different from the GoPro.

The fuzzy part below is soft coral. You can see that each piece of this soft coral is depicted clearly. If you look at the diver's outline, you can definitely tell that it's a diver. The difference here is quite significant. The sensor size of the Osmo Action 5 Pro is 1.13 inches, which is slightly larger. A larger sensor can capture more light. Capturing more light means that it has an advantage even in dark or challenging environments. On the other hand, the GoPro Hero 30 has a slightly smaller sensor, which leads to more severe issues with blown highlights and crushed blacks. For the Osmo Action 5 Pro to achieve such detailed depiction in this situation is truly impressive. So far, we have thoroughly compared the visual aspects, and from here on, I would like to discuss the functional comparisons.

やっぱり便利さとか手軽さっていうのは、アクションカムにとってかなり大事なポイントですよね。まずはクイックショットという機能についてですが、この機能は電源が切れている状態からシャッターボタンを押すだけで電源が入って録画が始まるというものです。これ、めちゃくちゃ便利ですよね。まず節電にもなりますし、液晶をつけているとやはり電池がかなり減りますので、必要な時にポンと押すだけで電源が入って撮影が始まる方が楽なんです。

この機能はGoPro 1やゾモ、アクション5 Proのどちらにも同じ機能がついていますので、その比較を見ていきたいと思います。もう一度見てみましょう。分かりました、もう一回見てみましょう。ちょっとOSMアクション5 Proが早すぎるんですよ。行きますよ。はい、よっしゃ！はい、GoProやっとついた。すごくないですか？GoProは、録画スタートボタンを押してから電源が起動して撮影が開始されるまで、少し時間がかかります。

It takes 3 seconds, but the Osmo Action 5 Pro only takes 0.3 seconds after pressing the button. Isn't that amazing? Let's take another look at this feature; it's really convenient. It's incredible, right? There is quite a difference. This is especially useful in diving situations where you suddenly want to capture something, like when a big fish appears out of nowhere or when an unexpected event occurs. There are times when you might miss something that Gad has introduced, and you want to start recording immediately. The difference between 0.3 seconds and 3 seconds is significant. For example, when you're in the ocean, sometimes a fish swims by suddenly. Let's see how different it is to start recording in 0.3 seconds versus 3 seconds. As you can see, if you can start recording in 0.3 seconds when you think something is happening, like with the Osmo Action 5 Pro, you can capture the subject very closely.

It happens that when you pass by, it goes by in an instant. After three seconds, all you can see is the figure disappearing. This feature can be used in just 0.3 seconds, which shows that it was truly created with the user in mind. It's similar in athletics as well; the perfect moment for a shot comes suddenly. At that moment, it's really about speed—it's so fast that it's incredible. This is a truly valuable feature. In terms of performance, I feel that the Osmo Action 5 Pro is designed with the user's perspective in mind. 

Next, we conducted a comparative test on battery life, so let's take a look at that together. We actually went diving for 40 minutes, using the GoPro 13 and the Osmo Action 5 Pro with exactly the same settings: 4K at 24p. The screen is set to go into screensaver mode and turn off after five minutes. In that state, we recorded continuously for 40 minutes to see how much battery was consumed by each device.

We have conducted a verification. Now, let's take a look. The GoPro 1 consumed up to 62%, while the OSMO Action 5 Pro only decreased to an astonishing 78%. Isn't that amazing? The GoPro still doesn't last long with just one battery during three dives. In contrast, the OSMO Action 5 Pro only decreased by 22% after running continuously for 40 minutes during one dive. With another battery, you could manage four dives! Isn't that incredible? Therefore, in terms of battery consumption and power efficiency, the OSMO Action 5 Pro wins. 

Additionally, regarding the battery, the GoPro 1 takes 120 minutes to charge from 0% to 100%. Two hours is quite long. On the other hand, the OSMO Action 5 Pro can charge from 0% to 80% in just 20 minutes. Furthermore, the OSMO Action 5 Pro now comes with built-in storage. Occasionally, built-in...

I think storage is something that exists in those electronic products, but the OSMO Action 5 Pro is on another level; it can store as much as 47GB. You can even operate it with just 47GB without needing to insert a microSD card. Isn't that amazing? Honestly, I wonder if the people who developed the Action 5 Pro are divers themselves because they have equipped it with specifications that really cater to the user's needs. Now, I would like to compare the smartphone apps. When it comes to downloading videos or editing footage, we definitely have to use a smartphone, so this aspect is quite important. Setting aside the finer features, there is one absolute difference that will definitely impact everyone, and I will explain that now. First, with the GoPro smartphone app, you have to download the material to your smartphone in the first place.

Once the download is complete, you can finally start editing, such as changing colors and so on. However, with the Osmo Action 5 Pro, you can edit the data directly from your smartphone without needing to download it first. This is a significant difference because downloading the material can take a lot of time. Recently, I tried downloading a three-minute video to my smartphone, and it took 3 minutes and 45 seconds. If you were to download a 30-minute video, a one-hour video, or a two-hour video to your smartphone, it would be incredibly tedious. Moreover, when downloading, you can't close the GoPro app; you have to keep your smartphone open the entire time. This means that during the download, you can't use your GoPro and smartphone for anything else, which is very inconvenient. In contrast, the DJI smartphone app for the Osmo Action 5 Pro allows you to...

You can download materials in the background, so no matter how long the video is, as long as you have it on your phone, you can use your smartphone without any issues. This is a significant difference. For example, if you can't use your smartphone for an hour while traveling, it can be quite concerning. I really think GoPro needs to improve in this area, while I must say DJI has done a great job. 

Furthermore, you can download only the edited files that you want to save to your smartphone, which means that the number of downloads is absolutely fewer with DJI. This difference is overwhelmingly significant. Also, the editing capabilities are superior in the DJI app. I recently tried the GoPro app for the first time in a while, but there hasn’t been any major change or evolution in it over the past few years; it seems to have stagnated. In contrast, DJI continues to think about how users want to use their products and has made improvements accordingly.

You can edit remotely from your smartphone, and it feels completely different. The usability is significantly different. When it comes to using it in action, this is definitely a factor that will have an impact, especially when you have to do it within the limited time while traveling. It makes a difference, doesn't it? So I really feel that there is a big difference here. 

Now, finally, I would like to compare something that everyone is curious about: the price. First, the GoPro 1 is priced at 61,881 yen including tax, while the OSMO Action 5 Pro is an astonishing 55,000 yen. The difference is 13,800 yen. Isn't that amazing? Furthermore, when comparing the sizes, the OSMO Action 5 Pro is smaller. 

We have compared the footage extensively and also looked at the features, and I think everyone has already made a judgment on which one is better. The performance is good, and it's also smaller.

And so, I think we can say that this is a case of an uprising. There’s no way to not use the Osmo Action 5 Pro. Considering the beautiful quality of recent footage and the updates from yesterday, if we look at the evolution over the years, the GoPro hasn't really progressed at all. On the other hand, DJI is rapidly enhancing features for users and improving the quality of the footage with continuous updates. It truly is an uprising. Moreover, for underwater use, the fisheye lens is essential, and now DJI products can utilize that. Everyone, from now on, DJI is truly worth keeping an eye on. They don’t just make drones; they also produce cinema cameras, gimbals that prevent shaking, and even a Vlog camera called the Zumo Pocket, which has a larger sensor size. They also create action cameras. Their technological prowess is overwhelmingly superior, so the performance is excellent.

It's small and inexpensive, and I think it will probably be realized. So, this isn't just a promotional statement, but I haven't been using a DSLR lately; I've been using an action camera. It really captures beautiful images, and thinking that this can be used makes it truly amazing. Many people in the diving community use GoPros, but if you look at color comparisons, you'll see that this is undeniably beautiful. I haven't seen many people with the Zoom action camera yet, but a new era has arrived. For those considering upgrading, I highly recommend watching various videos and actually getting a hands-on experience. I want everyone to capture beautiful images. Everyone puts a lot of effort into taking photos and videos, especially in diving, which isn't cheap. If you're going to go, you want to capture those wonderful views.
