Born in a colony of Athens, Epicurus was influenced by the events and philosophers of his time, drawing upon the works of Democritus and creating a unique understanding of the goal of life.

The Impact of Greek Political Shifts on Epicurean Philosophy

Schools of philosophy centered in Athens during the shift of Greek city-states from independence to being ruled by the Macedonian Empire.

The political struggles and power shifts among the Greek city-states led to a loss of independence and autonomy.

Alexander the Great's conquests and the division of his empire among his successors resulted in the Greek city-states no longer being politically significant.

Epicurus, a Greek philosopher, was not heavily involved in politics and focused more on practical matters like managing projects and taxes.

After traveling to various places, he established his school in Athens in 306 and spent the next 36 years teaching and writing.

Epicurus was a prolific author, covering topics such as natural philosophy, theology, love, and dealing with opinions and passions.

Despite writing about 43 works, only five documents by Epicurus have survived.

The Epicurean Philosophy and the Vatican Sayings

The Vatican Sayings, also known as the Principal Doctrines, were discovered in the Vatican Library.

The sayings cover topics like friendship, justice, and pleasure, which was a central focus of the Epicurean way of life.

Epicurus' teachings were based on pursuing pleasure and avoiding pain, including the enjoyment of food, intimacy, friendship, music, and art for a life with the most pleasure and the least pain.

Epicurus made distinctions between bodily and mental pleasures, emphasizing the importance of savoring experiences for long-term enjoyment.

He also distinguished between active and static pleasures, highlighting the pleasure of removing pain as equally important.

Epicureans believed that the good life consisted of maximizing resting pleasures and minimizing pain, prioritizing mental over physical satisfaction.

The word "Epicurean" comes from a Greek religious context and refers to a deliberate way of life.

Epicureans faced criticism for their focus on pleasure, but they believed that friendship and the avoidance of pain were also essential for a good life.
