Creating Goku Model for VR Experience

[Music] Hi, I'm Jordan, and I like to make cool things. I've been messing around in Unity, creating Dragon Ball powers in VR. When making a VR game, it's tempting to just let the player control a pair of floating hands. From a gameplay perspective, it provides all the emotion you need. Just look at something like Half-Life: Alyx, for example. But I wanted to explore including an entire model for the player, partly as a valuable learning experience that will surely come in handy for future projects, but also so that I could turn Super Saiyan and make a cool video about it. I found a model of Goku from Dragon Ball: Kakarot and put it into my project. In order for this to actually feel like the player's body, the position of the model's hands and head need to follow the position of the VR headset and controllers. A very useful tool in getting something like that working is Unity's Animation Rigging package. This package allows you to control the animation of a model by moving and rotating the model's bones.

this can be done dynamically during gameplay to create unique animations, and in our case, make the model mimic the player's actual body movements. After importing Unity's Animation Rigging package, I added a Bone Renderer component from the package onto my model of Goku. This component allows us to see all the bones inside the model and makes setting up the animation much easier by letting us select the bones we care about quickly. By default, it shows every single bone that the model contains. These models can be quite complex and contain bones that are used for really fine movements or even the movement of the model's clothing. For our purposes, we only needed the main humanoid bones for the arms, legs, spine, neck, and head. Luckily, the Bone Renderer component allows you to easily hide certain bones, so I hid all the bones we wouldn't be needing to leave us with just the main ones. With the setup out of the way, I started by adding a two-bone IK constraint to each of Goku's arms. IK stands for Inverse Kinematics, which means it uses some fancy maths to figure

out what the position and orientation of the upper arm and forearm should be in order for the wrist to be in the location that I've told it to be. Basically, this allows me to move around Goku's hands, and his arms will automatically move to a realistic position to accommodate the new hand position. We also need to be able to move Goku's head so that we can make the model look where the player is looking and actually move the entire Goku model to be in line with the player's position. To do that, we can use a multi-parent constraint. This constraint isn't too fancy; it just makes the position and rotation of the head follow the position and rotation that I specify. Now, all I needed to do was write some code that makes the position and rotation of the constraints follow the position and rotation of my VR headset and controllers, which of course worked perfectly first try. At this point, I realized that you can't actually see much of your own player model when you're in VR. To allow us to actually enjoy having a

body a bit more. I thought adding in something like a mirror would be cool, and also have the added benefit of helping us see if everything was lining up properly from a different angle. I thought making a perfect mirror would be easy, but it turns out it's a bit tricky to create a mirror that's actually realistic. I didn't really need this mirror to be perfect, so I ended up making something that was just good enough for now. I made it by adding a render texture to a quad and creating and positioning a camera game object through some code. The code made sure that the camera mirrored the player's position somewhat, and also made sure that it looked back towards the player. Whatever the camera saw was then shown on the render texture. As I said already, this didn't turn out super realistic, but it was good enough to let me see what was going on. Now that I could see myself in VR, I could see just how misaligned Goku's hands were from my actual VR hands. [Music] I started the long and somewhat tedious

process of hopping in and out of VR, tweaking my code, in the position of my hands relative to the animation constraints. After a while, I did manage to get Goku's hands to line up properly with my own, and at that point, it was safe to stop rendering the SteamVR hands. Next, I wanted to get Goku's legs working. So far, they just stuck out straight and passed through the floor. I needed them to bend when I crouch and maybe even make some attempts at seeming like they're walking when I move. This minute was time for some more inverse kinematics. Unlike the arms, the legs don't specifically follow the position of a VR controller. We have to do a little bit of work to determine a realistic enough position for Goku's feet to be in, then let the IK script work its magic to position the legs accordingly. I did this by writing some code that sends a raycast for each of Goku's feet downwards from above to detect if Goku was standing on a surface. If the raycast

hits the surface. Then the point at which the raycast hit the surface would be the position we set Goku's feet to be in, and the ik script would do the rest. This worked really well as long as Goku was standing still. It allows us to crouch realistically and even jump. [Music] So Goku is now following my movements pretty well, but the head movement was still a bit weird. Anytime I'd sand my head, Goku's entire body would turn with it. I wanted the turning to feel a bit more natural, so that the head would turn first and the torso would follow a bit later, and then lastly the legs would follow the torso. I achieved this by lerping the torso's forward Vector to the head's forward vector, and lerping the waist's forward Vector to the torso's forward vector. With some tweaking of the timings, I ended up with something that felt quite natural, and I only turned Goku into a writhing, massive flesh, longing for the sweet Embrace of death once or twice.

why are we still here just suffer every everything? The overall movement was actually feeling really good. Now, Goku's movements were similar enough to mine to make me feel like Goku's body was my body, but there were a few things about Goku's legs that weren't right. They looked great when I wasn't moving, but they didn't react realistically when flying or walking. They would eerily slide along the floor when walking or stick out completely straight when flying. [Music] Making their legs look better when flying was quite straightforward. I just wrote some code which set the position of the feet to a more natural position if Goku was in the air, and the leg ik script sorted out the rest. Making the legs move more realistically when Goku was on the ground was much more tricky, so naturally I immediately decided to steal, I mean draw inspiration from someone else's code. In this case, I ended up using the ik foot solver script from Unity Zone procedural Walker tutorial. Unfortunately, this didn't work perfectly right out of the box since it doesn't

account for the player flying, so I had to do a little bit of the legwork myself to make it smoothly transition from walking to flying properly. Now I'll acknowledge that overall this effect is what we in the game development industry call jank, but at least his legs could move. I decided this was okay for now, but it could definitely be refined and adjusted to make it look more natural. Maybe I'll give that a go sometime, but for now Goku was doing everything I needed him to do, and it turned out better than I thought it would. It doesn't end there though, because of course we only completed step one of our two-step plan to become a Super Saiyan. We need a Super Saiyan version of the Goku model to swap out with the original Goku model when we transform. That meant I had to repeat the same process I had just done to get the original Goku model moving on the Super Saiyan version. Luckily, since I'd already done it once, doing it again should be really easy. Wow, Unity decided to crash on me at least 20

times while I was sorting this bit out, and for some reason, the Super Saiyan model just didn't want to cooperate. But I did eventually manage to get it moving in the same way the original model moved. Now I just had to figure out how I wanted to swap the models so that it would look cool in the game. Simply swapping the models was easy enough; all I had to do was write some code to make the normal Goku model disappear and the Super Saiyan model appeared. I also made it so that Goku would transform after he spent a certain amount of time charging up, since that's usually how it works in the anime. Just swapping the models without any extra visual effects or sound effects was quite anti-climactic, though, so it definitely needed something to spice it up. It needed a nice big flashy glowy effect. I used an emissive material to create a big flash of light right at the moment I swap out the models. That, along with some sound effects, made a huge difference. Here's how it turned out in the end.

[Music] It would be interesting if turning Super Saiyan actually changed the gameplay somehow, but for now, this is purely cosmetic. I had lots of fun making this, and I'm looking forward to using more player models in my future projects. The developer wrote code to make the leg movements more natural during flying and used a script from the Unity Zone procedural Walker tutorial for ground movements, but had to adjust it to transition smoothly between walking and flying.

Despite the "jank" effect, the developer was satisfied with the result but acknowledged the need for further refinement.

Additionally, a Super Saiyan version of the Goku model was needed, requiring a similar process of getting the movements right.

The process involved troubleshooting and eventually getting the Super Saiyan model to move like the original.

Swapping the models was enhanced with a glowing effect and sound effects for a more dramatic impact.

The transformation, for now, is purely cosmetic and doesn't affect gameplay, but the creator is excited to explore more VR projects in the future.
