The government has today released the basic plan for the second airport project. The total project cost is 5.45 trillion won, and additional expansions will be considered based on air traffic demand. The construction of the second airport has been confirmed in the Honinji area of Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo City. It has been nine years since the government announced the plan for the airport in November 2015. As a first step, the core facilities of the airport will be developed. On a total area of 5.51 million square meters, a runway of 3,200 meters in length, similar in size to Jeju International Airport, along with a passenger terminal and other facilities will be constructed. The airport will be capable of handling 19.9 million passengers annually. The total project cost of 5.45 trillion won will be fully funded by the government, enabling it to accommodate the expected increase in domestic and international air traffic, which will lead to an increase in tourists to the region.

Economic revitalization effects are also expected. Following the demand for air travel, the second phase of the expansion project for the remaining land will be reviewed. Cultural and commercial facilities for regional coexistence and development are planned to be established, but the project cost of 1.4 trillion won has not been reflected. Additionally, how to operate domestic and international flights, as well as the division of roles between Jeju International Airport and Jeju Airport, will require further discussions. We will transparently disclose all procedures related to the construction project of Jeju Airport and carry them out fairly while continuously gathering opinions. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to proceed with subsequent procedures such as basic design and environmental impact assessment after the announcement of the basic plan for Jeju Airport.
