Hey, my good friends, Sam Heyart with Test Driven TV. Ford has finally revealed the new 2025 Maverick pickup truck, and while

it's sort of a mild refresh—a carryover, new color, styling, things like that—one of the most important new additions is

the all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain option. So I know there's a lot of people out there that want to know more about

the system, how it works, and what it's going to be like to drive, because the new 2025 Ford Maverick

comes, again, standard with a hybrid drivetrain and now, for the first time, offers all-wheel drive. Many of its

prospective buyers have never driven or even considered purchasing one before. This will likely be the very first hybrid for a vast many people who have a

lot of questions about it. And in that way, there are those with basic hybrid 101 questions about how it works. For

that, I've got an in-depth video on our Maverick playlist that outlines in detail how the hybrid system works,

drives, and what it's like to live with. Here we're talking about the new hybrid all-wheel-drive model added for 2025. The

Ford Maverick hybrid powertrain is composed of both a 2.5L Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine and an eCVT transaxle.

The electrified transmission, called eCVT, is not to be confused with the traditional gasoline-powered CVT with

pulley and belt that few people actually like, and many of which have bad reliability records. An eCVT has no

pulley or belt, but has a simple planetary gear set and two electric motors. One motor, known as the e-motor,

provides your main electric driving power. The smaller motor, known as the motor-generator, is used to start the

engine, charge the high-voltage battery, and provide regenerative braking. And it also performs other power-balancing functions. It's actually a remarkably

simple system with about one-third the moving parts of a conventional automatic transmission; the Maverick's H45

transaxle is designed in-house and built at Ford's Van Dyke Electric Powertrain Center in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

In both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models, it's a variation of the same transaxle currently used in the

long-proven Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair hybrids. The e-motor has about 6 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque,

combined with a 2.5L gasoline engine which itself has 162 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. Ford publishes a total

blended system horsepower maximum of 191 and a total torque of 155 lb-ft. Now let's talk about how we get to

all-wheel drive. Unlike the systems that Toyota and other brands use, which feature a separate electric motor at the

rear axle and provide all-wheel drive functionality without a driveshaft connecting the front and rear axles, the

Ford Maverick hybrid has a more conventional system. The Maverick hybrid all-wheel drive uses a conventional

power takeoff from the transaxle and sends it to the rear axle through a driveshaft. An electronically controlled

clutch allows it to act as a front-wheel-drive-only vehicle most of the time to save fuel. When traction becomes

challenged and slippage is detected, the computer can route torque to the rear axle when needed. Computer-controlled

traction and stability control systems automatically use the brakes at each corner to balance power to the wheels with the most traction and arrest

the spinning wheels that don't. Various drive modes can provide different algorithms to the all-wheel-drive system

for various off-road and slippery surface scenarios. They can bias the system to a more robust balance of traction, like the EcoBoost standard.

all-wheel drive system, which is identical to the one in the EcoBoost Maverick. There's no dedicated locking function that can

force all-wheel drive traction 100% of the time, like other brands offer. But because of the extra traction and

inherent robustness of the Maverick's now-proven hybrid drivetrain, Ford is offering customers the option of the

4,000-lb towing package on the Maverick Hybrid. The package brings additional cooling components with unique

powertrain and battery management software. There's also an upgraded trailer hitch receiver with both four-pin and seven-pin connectors, and a

trailer brake controller included. All right, my friends, there you have it: a brief overview of the

new hybrid all-wheel drive engine option in the Maverick. It's a big deal—people have been asking for it forever—but at

the same time, a lot of people have been speculating how it's going to work, what it's going to be, what the

components are. Now you know it's essentially the same all-wheel drive system that you'll find in the EcoBoost

Maverick; the only difference is it has the hybrid drivetrain at the front.

Otherwise, it works identically to the EcoBoost. And unfortunately, at least for now, they don't have a Maverick Hybrid

trim level with this system, which would be nice to have a more robust all-wheel drive system like that if you were really

going off-roading. But not yet. This is what we have now. We have a lot of

other videos on the 2023 Ford Maverick, and as mentioned earlier in this video, we have a complete

detailed hybrid 101 that really goes into how the Maverick hybrid drive system works, if you want to learn more.

about that and you're curious, a lot more detail than what we've done here. It's got pictures and diagrams and all kinds

of fun stuff like that. You can see all of that on our Maverick playlist right there, the largest Maverick playlist

anywhere on YouTube. We're very proud of that; it's been a lot of work putting that together. You can also subscribe to

T&D TV Garage right there if you really like the nuts and bolts stuff. Either way, stay tuned.
